The Endicott siblings, who grew up supporting each other through thick and thin, with a bond created by an absent father and a mother who abandoned them to find her own fulfillment, haven't spoken to each other in years. They're all facing challenges that could be helped by having their siblings by their side, but no one wants to be the one to break the silence. Until a text arrives from the youngest sibling, Jude, instructing everyone to meet her in a small town in North Dakota. The siblings will have to look back on their past traveling across the US with their mom to find the path forward in their uncertain futures.
I don't know how Smith did it, but this book is the perfect balance of emotional drama and inspiring family relationships. There's a little something in every single character that you can relate to. Even if their situation is not similar to yours, the emotions are there. You get pulled into the drama of 4 siblings who let tragedy and misunderstandings keep them apart, but stay for the healing of them finding a way back to each other to offer support once again. Even when something awful happens, it still feels like a celebration of the blessing that siblings are.
My one tiny complaint would be that the ending felt like it was rushed, and we didn't get the chance to fully experience what happens. But I appreciate that it lets the story focus on the positives instead of the darker emotions, so I can forgive it.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for the wonderfully emotional read!
