Joy raised Cassie and Andie with colorful tales of them coming from the future and having to hide from bad people to explain why they live such rigid lives tucked away in their little house behind a laundromat. It all comes to a head on the twins' 21st birthday, when the lies begin to unravel and Joy is found dead.

I was inclined to like this one because it's full of twists and emotional revelations, but there's something about what happens to the mother and the delusion in which the girls grow up that made a lot of it just feel icky. A testament to Mayne's writing, which felt realistic, and more on me than them, but I couldn't enjoy this one like it was supposed to.

It is quirky and imaginative with impressive planning evident in the way things are revealed through time jumps and hints. It just wasn't for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the interesting read!
