A Risky Game is a 5 star followup to the Liars Society and one of my top recommended middle grade reads in my library. We join Weatherby, Jack and the rest of the group as they start the trials for the Last Heir. However, during the very first trial, the game takes a scary turn and it seems like the stakes are higher then they would have guessed! The story takes off full of more mysteries, riddles and thrills for the characters and for the reader. I was completely hooked and I loved getting deeper insights into our characters and their relationships. This is the perfect series for mystery and thriller readers and is a hit in my middle school library!

This is a great mystery for middle-grade readers. The characters are written true to age, so they don't feel too young. The twists, puzzles, and reveals keep you rooting for Jack and Weatherby. It reminds me of The Inheritance Games, but written for a slightly younger audience. I am enjoying this adventure and will continue the series when the next book comes out.

Alyson Gerber's new novel, "A Risky Game", is just as exciting as last year's hit middle grade mystery, "The Liars Society". The sequel is full of intrigue and puzzles that will keep kids turning pages. Weatherby and Jack are determined to pass all the gambits to earn the right to join the secret society "The Last Heirs". The Society offers power and prestige to members. But for Jack and Weatherby it offers so much more. they have uncovered family secrets and hope that membership may provide the answers. But someone doesn't want Weatherby to succeed, and she finds that her life may be in danger if she continues! Gerber has spun a fast-paced thriller for kids and this is one adult who can't wait to read the next installment in this series.

Alyson Gerber has done it again! I loved the suspense and mystery of A Risky Game just as much as the first book in the series. I literally cannot put these books down, wanting to know what happens next with Jack and Weatherby. Cant wait for the 3rd book! My readers are going to LOVE this series!

Thanks to @alysongerber and @scholastic I got to continue reading my favorite new middle grade mystery series with book 2 of the Liars Society! #partner
As with the first book, there are so many lies, twists, and secrets as Weatherby and Jack are attempting to join Last Heir. There are puzzles like those found in The Inheritance Games but for younger readers.
Book 2 raises the stakes and often finds Weatherby questioning who to trust - and this time it’s clear someone is trying to seriously hurt her in the process.
Why Kirsten loves it:
As the series continues to unfold, I’m finding myself drawn into the lore of The Boston School and Last Heir in the best way. Each puzzle has me trying to solve it before the kids and there were numerous high-stress situations that had me on the edge of my seat!

This was a great follow up to Liar's Society #1 - I'm looking forward to adding this to my classroom library!

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and this one is better than the first! The puzzles are age appropriate for the audience intended. Overall, this was a fun read! I do recommend reading the first book before this one. Special Thank You to Alyson Gerber, Scholastic and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! Even better than the first!
Who doesn’t love a good mystery, especially when you are up against high stakes and dangerous challenges? But would you keep going to uncover all the secrets, if your own safety was threatened?
Gerber has crafted an intense mystery with constant peril that will keep readers turning the page to get through just one more chapter until the secrets are revealed.

*2.5 rounded down to 2 stars on Goodreads // Thank you NetGalley and Scholastic for the ARC!
This is the sequel to The Liars Society, which I read as an ARC last year. Middle grade isn’t usually my usual age group to read, but the plot of the book was so interesting that I really wanted to. When I saw this book on NetGalley, I immediately requested it!
Unfortunately, I did not like this book very much. The plot wasn’t the issue at all. It was fun to read about and there was always a lot happening. However, there was NO REMINDER AT ALL about what happened in the first book and who any of the characters were !! I was confused for basically the entire novel trying to figure out what I didn’t remember, and honestly I still don’t understand a lot of the plot.
I’m not going to say that this book is necessarily bad, just because I struggled with it doesn’t mean that you will. I think that if I read this right after the first book I would have liked it quite a bit more. This book ended on a cliffhanger, but I will probably not be reading any future books in this series.

Cousins Weatherby and Jack have been invited to compete to join Last Heir, a powerful secret society which includes former presidents, senators, and other wealthy individuals. Before they can join, they must solve several puzzles. Even though I wasn’t the target demographic for this book, I enjoyed it. I initially picked it up because I thought the cover looked interesting, although I thought it was geared for teens rather than middle school / junior high. The action and danger felt age appropriate though; one person is in ‘danger’ being locked in a room that meant they didn’t have enough time to complete a quest, for example. My biggest complaint would be that the novel is a bit weak as a standalone; I didn’t read the previous book and felt lost in several places.
Overall, especially in the target demo, recommended. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley.Com which I voluntarily reviewed.

Book 2 of the Liar's Society kept me just as engaged as book 1!
A Risky Game it was indeed!
As soon as I finished it, I texted another librarian saying "I hope Gerber already has a contact for book 3 because I need more!"
The characters are easy to connect with, the challenges and puzzles are intriguing, and the mystery and suspense makes you give up everything on your should and must do list to flip the pages instead. Middle grade readers and adults alike will NOT be disappointed by this series.

I had hoped that I would like this book at least as much as Book 1, but we all know sequels are never as good, and this one supports that theory. Add to that a lack of a good backstory refresher and it’s hard to get into. Don’t expect to jump in mid series and have any clue of what’s going on. The plot really is getting too convoluted, too nonsensical, melting like a week old snowman.
Weatherby has recently learned that her MIA father, Yates, is actually the brother of the Hunt family patriarch, Charles, making her a member of the wealthiest family in Boston. Now she, her cousin Jack, and a few other kids from her elite Boston boarding school, are trying to get accepted into a secret society called Last Heir. To do so, they have to successfully complete a series of gambits and unscramble mysterious anagrams that this family loves using. But things aren’t all they seem. Jack’s dad is hiding something and someone is trying to keep Weatherby out of the society, even if that means killing her.
Not as fun as book 1 with the boarding school vibe as we are introduced to the characters and get a slow build into the mystery.

The author continues to deepen the relationships between characters through the use of a game. This book is good for students that like puzzles and trying to solve a mystery.

At the end of The Liars Society, Weatherby discovered she and Jack are actually first cousins, so now they are working together to try to get into the Liars Society, while also looking for the Last Heir. As they are working together to solve puzzles and figure out clues, Weatherby starts receiving threats, but is determined to join the society anyway. Who can she trust as it gets more and more dangerous?
I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book, in part because the plot seemed to move slowly as they tried to solve clues. I will purchase this because the first one is popular, but I hope the next book has more action, such as more of the boating. I do appreciate a middle school mystery that has puzzles like the Inheritance Games series, which is more YA.

What a sequel! Weatherby and Jack are back with their friends. After finding out her father is a Hunt, Weatherby is determined to join the Last Heir secret society. But as she and her friends complete challenges and then head to Hart Island for the school trip, they discover that someone wants Weatherby dead and Jack is certain he knows who it is.
Still full of middle grade suspense, Alyson Gerber has created a series that will delight and intrigue readers. I cannot wait to add more of this series to my library shelves!

A fun and twisty follow-up to The Liar's Society. Thought not quite as snappy as book one (and ending on *another* cliffhanger) the characters are still fun and the situations are still full of intrigue and suspense.

My students LOVED the first book and are so envious I got to read this one. I know it is going to fly off the shelves as well. I appreciate being able to read this in advance so that it can inform my purchases.

Weatherby and Jack discovered they were cousins in Book 1, and now they’re inseparable allies in their hunt for The Last Heir and their pursuit of The Liar’s Society. But when Weatherby becomes the target of a sinister threat, everything changes. With her life on the line, most people would step away from the dangerous path to join a secret society—but not Weatherby. Determined and fearless, she throws herself into every challenge, driven by a deeper goal: the chance to finally meet her father. As tensions rise, Weatherby must decide who she can trust, while Jack does everything in his power to protect his newfound cousin. Will they overcome the dangers ahead, or will the secrets they uncover tear them apart?
AMAZING! Ally had me on the edge of my seat with all the puzzles, intrigue, fear, and more! This book did not let me down! I love the dual POV and the relationship between Jack & Weatherby and their team of Liars. I cannot wait for the next book...a year is a LONG time!

I received a free copy of, A Risky Game (The Liars Society #2), by Alyson Gerber, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Cousins Jack and Weatherby have been selected to join the last heirs, a very powerful secret society. You don't know who to trust in this book, this was a really good read.

I loved this sequel to The Liar's Society and I believe my middle schoolers will too! The mystery and suspense was just the right amount to hook the reader.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC.
