Honestly, it's sad when a book has a wonderful concept and so much potential, and it is all ruined by its main characters.
This particular book was the same. At first glance, it sounds like the perfect combo of supernatural abilities and suspense adventures, with a heavy dose of romance and hot scenes, but it was all so wooden, I really couldn't care less what happened from some point onward.
As I said, it all comes down to the characters.
Jordan was a mess. And not the fun one, or the quirky one, or generally any kind of good when combined with the word "mess". She was arrogant, reckless to the point of suicidal, judgemental, and refused to listen to anything anyone would tell her. Noooo, she was a pro in her field, she knew best, screw any person - especially GUYS - that would ry to save her or protect her. She was, in all honesty, a joke! All clues pointed from the very first moment that Tyler was undercover, but noooo, she just had to assume he was a scumbag and stick to that opinion. And then, when she finally learnt what was going on - not figured out, mind you, like Tyler did - she was obstinate and stubborn to the point of stupidity and childish pettiness!
How on Earth did the other characters in the story see her as badass? Was it because she could kick someone while wearing slutty clothes? Please! All I saw was an idiot who was letting her pride do the talking and kept thinking that her authority would be challenged if she dared accept even a little help from someone else - oh, sorry, I meant from a guy, obviously, because poor Jordan was trying so hard to establish to anyone to whom it may concern that she was perfectly capable of being a good cop and the mean, bad males couldn't let her do it, they kept trying to protect her from the mess she kept creating. Boohoo!
I'm not even talking about professionalism at this point. Even Tyler, a mere local cop, supposedly not as big of a deal as her, was more of a professional than she was (which isn't a lot, by the way, let me clarify that at least)! And Bahan called her out on it (more on Bahan later, he's the only reason I didn't DNF this story).
Speaking of Tyler, I tried to like him. I really did. He was protective, and kind, and hot. But he was also an idiot. A lovestruck one. He kept getting sidetracked because he was more concerned with trying to keep the other idiot - aka Jordan - alive and willing to be his woman. And that resulted in heartbreak for both of them, and then sex to make up, and more fights between them, and then sex again...
Focus, people!!! There is a crime lord on the loose, lives are depending on you. Your jobs and those of your partners are at stake. And you ignore all that to just bitch to each other about who has the upper hand in the case - on which you should both be working together, not against each other like it's a fucking race - and deal with your emotional and existential issues! Like a pair of fifteen-year-olds!
Thank God for Ted Bahan! The man was amazing! I kept thinking at first that he must be a real douche for Jordan to be so paranoid about kicking her to the side and taking credit, but it was all wrong, and, once again, all in her mind. The guy was not only a proper colleague, he was a saint! He cared about Jordan, trusted her, respected her, and looked out for her - only to be seen as a sexist in her eyes, a sexist who was supposedly trying to show her he was the boss. I wanted to punch her when Ted finally appeared in the book properly and I saw what we were dealing with!
Not to mention, he didn't beat around the bush, and was honest and accepting of her. And her talents. And as he so eloquently stated, she needed to work on her communication skills before condemning the entire world for not understanding and accepting her. She kept saying people thought her crazy for having visions, but she never gave them any time to process what she had confessed!
"You can’t drop a bomb like ‘I have visions, I have dreams’, and then get angry because I need a little explanation. Things are fairly black and white to me.” - Ted Bahan
But the main reason I loved this character? He got the job done! And never got the credit he obviously deserved. He only appeared in the story for two chapters. Not even twenty pages long. And in those chapters he sorted out the mess Tyler and Jordan created, organized a rescue team for Jordan - and found her within HOURS -, got the woman to the hospital, comforted Tyler and made him see reason, and even planned successfully how to not only keep the case open, but also in their favor and jurisdiction! I repeat, in case it didn't sink in: TWO. CHAPTERS!
How that man didn't end up being the main character after all, I will never know...
I'm disappointed with the way this book turned out, and thus will not read the next ones in the series - I saw they are about Jordan and Tyler, too, so no thanks, I'm not getting involved with that couple again, once was enough.

Detective Jordan Delaney is trying very hard to prove to everyone she’s perfectly capable of running an undercover operation and then she promptly falls into bed with a suspect. Tyler McGee is trying really hard to get hired by the drug guy, so he can prove drug guy is bad, bad news, but he immediately fixates on the blonde with the big tits who he keeps telling she shouldn’t be working for the bad man. For her own good, you know. But she just won’t listen to his superior intellect! Okay, Khan. And he wonders disparagingly why do women order big meals and then a diet pop? Gee, I don’t know you sexist piece of shit. Maybe they like fizzy drinks, but don’t want to raise their blood sugar 50 pts for every 4 oz? You know how I know that? My husband is diabetic. So fuck off, you judgmental asshole.
Jordan has nightmares about people who have died. That’s the best thing about this story. The characters in this book are shit. Absolute shit. Too bad this awesome idea is attached to these fuckwad characters. Jordan thinks with her dripping, clenching pussy. She just can’t say no and mean it. Some professional cop she is. Tyler is constantly in her personal space with kisses and gropes and shoving his cock in her even when she says no. Oh, she backtracks and tries to convince the reader that she really wanted his attention, but no does not mean yes do me over my wimpy protests. Then he breaks into her apartment and acts all pissed off when she cuffs him. I’m done. I hate them both and I hope the drug lord discovers them, tortures them, and stakes them out for wild animals to eat.
Oh, and that nightmare she’s been having? I figured out who the girl was right off the bat. Lame.
