All We Lost Was Everything by Sloan Harlow
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
#yathriller

Without giving anything at all away that was not in the blurb, the title really should be "All I Lost Was Everything". Bc she is the only one that lost anything and everything. But she has strangely gained an ally. Logan. That in itself has her confused. But she is so glad she has her bff Tawny to fall back on. Or does she?

I really did love this story. I did not want to put this book down. This author kept me rivitted to my seat and this book. I wanted to give it a full 5⭐s but River's trust levels bugged the crap out of me. She needed to learn a little bit more survival instinct. I will definitely be picking up the next book by this author!

Wasn’t my favorite. I had a hard time getting into this one and had to stop and start a few times. I can’t really say why. I will not say it is a bad book just not for me this time. Someone else will definitely love it!

This was just "meh" for me; it started out as a decent young adult romance story but was always relatively flat - the characters didn't do much for me and I never really connected with any of them. The storyline was rather juvenile, focused on friendships, family drama and a love/hate romantic relationship. But the twist that flipped this to a "thriller/mystery" book toward the end took it from an average 3-star to a generous 2-star. It was a ridiculous and far-fetched and wasn't remotely "thrilling." To be fair, while I typically enjoy young adult novels, I am NOT a young adult, so I'm not the target audience for this one. I may be expecting too much given the primary genre. But it was a big disappointment for me, unfortunately.

If you like thrillers, then I would recommend this one. It's full of twists and turns and keeps you wanting more. That being said, I'm not sure why but I had a hard time connecting to the main character. There was almost too much going on. The poor girl had one thing happening right after another. The romance was a bit off for me. It's a slow burn but the on again, off again was making me roll my eyes.

All We Lost Was Everything is brilliant, haunting, and impossible to put down. It’s YA fiction at its best—heartfelt, thrilling, and full of surprising truths. It had me hooked from the start! River’s story is heartbreaking but so full of strength, and I loved watching her try to piece her life back together after losing so much. Whether you’re craving romance, mystery, heartbreak, or redemption, this novel delivers it all with elegance and power.

Fast-paced, dramatic thriller. Twisty. Dark. Relentless suspense. This book had me gasping. The twists. The turns. It unpacks a lot (grief, loss, substance abuse, abandonment, forgiveness) creating the feels from the start.

There was a lot going on in this book! Mystery, suspense, twists and turns, kind of like a soap opera. Some of it worked, but the rest didn't. I'm not sure where the disconnect was, but I didn't feel overly invested in the outcome. Things felt a little over the top and not quite genuine.

2.5 stars

All We Lost Was Everything was an emotional and beautifully written novel that truly struck a chord with me. Sloan Harlow explores grief, love, and resilience with raw honesty and depth. The characters felt heartbreakingly real, and their emotional journeys were both painful and healing to witness. It was a powerful, unforgettable story that stayed with me long after the final page.

What do you do when your whole world literally burns down and you can't trust what you thought you knew?

My heart absolutely hurts for Sloane. Her grief was felt so strongly through this book and I hurt with her. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat as well! I most definitely didn't know what to expect next, but it was so exciting!
I think this shows that people will always come into your life for a reason, even if it's not the reason you originally think!

River Santos is eighteen, grieving, and adrift. After surviving a devastating house fire that killed her father and loosened the grip on everything she once knew, and with her mother missing for nearly a year, River tries to rebuild her life with the help of her best friend Tawny and niece‑like aunt, Tita Anna . Then an anonymous $2 million GoFundMe donation turns her world upside down. As she works at a diner, she meets Logan, the stoic, attractive coworker who somehow knows more than he lets on. Romance blooms, but secrets unravel fast, and River begins to question everyone around her and the tragedy she thought she understood.

The pacing was a little uneven and the ending felt rushed. I had difficulty connecting with the characters. If you’re a fan of YA romantic thrillers with emotional stakes, big twists, and a touch of angst, this novel delivers. It’s especially appealing to readers who enjoy protagonists wrestling with grief and identity while navigating secrets and betrayal.

What a great book! River is such a strong character who suffers a huge loss in the beginning of the book. After her life quite literally goes up in smoke, we see her bff Tawny and her aunt Tita Anna help her navigate her new reality. When the new guy at work, Logan, starts showing interest I felt it was such a win for her when she needs it most—even though things were clearly not quite as it seemed with him.

As things start to heat up, her ex boyfriend Noah starts coming around and things get confusing for a bit. As we find out more about where River’s mom went, where Tawny’s never present mom is and what really happened the night of the fire, we get a conclusion that is both perfect and sad all at the same time.

This book was SO well written and perfectly paced that it could’ve easily been a movie. I look forward to future books by this author! 10/10 recommend this book!

A slow burn romance and thriller combined into one.

River Santos has lost practically everything. Her boyfriend dumped her, her mom has been MIA for months, and her dad is dead - lost in a tragic house fire. All she has left is her best friend Tawny, her aunt, and a dead end job at a local diner. She's given up her dreams of college, of music, and she's just...drifting.

But when her hot guy coworker at the diner starts to notice her, it feels like maybe things could turn around. But he has secrets. Everyone around her seems to have secrets. And as they come to light, River will be left reeling, wondering if anything she thought was true actually is. The most tragic night of her life might not be an accident...and someone she knows might be responsible.

This wasn't a bad read. It wasn't my favorite by any stretch of the imagination, but I enjoyed it. I feel like it was a little too slow burn for me. It took awhile for events to build. Despite what seemed like an elongated series of events, I was still able to guess quite a few of the major twists way before they occured. (Which feels odd when you feel like you're having to read chapter after chapter after chapter just to get somewhere narratively.) That being said, there were other twists that were insanely well executed and truly left me guessing up until the moment of the reveal. So bravo to those!

The characters are very well done. Most of the main cast are in their late teens and extremely early twenties so you're dealing with a decent helping of naivety, bad choices, and youthful passion. But none of them ever felt too naive or too silly. They were believable. The series of events, less so. This was definitely a case of oh my god can the main character not catch a break already? It was one over the top event after another. I feel like the author could have narrowed her focus a bit and this still would have been an excellent romance/thriller.

Overall, if you enjoy slow burn romance and an even slower burning thriller, this would be the read for you.

This book kept me guessing up through the end. I was hooked and stumped and right and wrong and ran the whole gamut. I really enjoyed this story.

I didn’t realize this was YA when I started it. I wanted to read this because I thought the cover was pretty and the first line of the synopsis read “a sexy, dark romantic thriller - with a shocking twist”. I’ve been on a thriller kick, so I thought I’d enjoy this, but it wasn’t my favorite. The twists and turns in this book were great. There were even some I didn’t see coming. I love when a book is able to surprise me. However, I would’ve like this better if the characters were aged up a bit. I really could’ve done without the spicyish scenes.

A few months ago River's dad died when their house burned down. Her mom up and dipped months before that. She lives with her aunt and works at a diner with her best friend, Tawny. Then there's cute waiter Logan and her ex-boyfriend Noah who make things more complicated. When new information comes out about the fire that killed her dad, it's all River can think about. For so long it was assumed to be an accident, but now River's not so sure.

So, I don't read YA for romance. I like murder mysteries/thrillers and that's it. River and Logan felt like insta-love, which I always find very weird. Luckily, their relationship was not the entire focus and the mystery and the twists that came with it were enough to keep me going.

In regards to the relationship, this definitely reads more like older YA and I would not let Eleanor have a go at it yet. The characters are beginning-college age-ish so it is upper YA anyway.

I really liked the mystery and had so many questions about River's parents, the fire, and her mom's disappearing act. It was an engaging read, even if the characters sometimes came across as cardbord cutouts of certain tropes. Some things I saw coming, some I didn't, and it was not the worst way to spend a couple hours.

Recommended.

This book was good, but it didn’t really stand out. It delivered on the elements of a true thriller, but it felt a little too long for the story it was trying to tell. The pacing dragged in places, which took away some of the tension and urgency.

It’s definitely a YA novel, and that tone fits well with the story since the characters are young. The writing captures that voice authentically, and while it may not have been particularly memorable for me, it still offered a solid reading experience for fans of young adult thrillers.

I was NOT expecting that ending in any way, shape or form. My jaw was on the floor. Rivers life changes after her house burns down, killing her father. Her mother, long gone, known to run away when time get tough. Her only solace is her best friend Tawny and her dear "aunt" who took over her care. After her fathers passing, River gets a mysterious 2 million dollar donation to her gofundme. Shes unable to narrow down who gave it to her, starting an obsession and a saga in which NO ONE expects what they find. In the midst, River grows close to a co-worker, Logan who has also lost a parent, unaware of the role Logan plays in the grand scheme of all the incidents in her life. Following River through her discovery of everything being interconnected, the twists are incredible and nothing you would ever see coming. I loved this read, once I started I was unable to put it down!

I really enjoyed All We Lost Was Everything. It was a fast paced thriller with lots of twists. It was more mystery than romance in my opinion but I loved that about it.
