Saoirse's curse has led to her living a solitary and tortured life. She knows losing control of her magic can lead to tragic consequences, which is a big part of why her dad offers her hand to the cold and ruthless Stone King, but she's not ready to give up on life yet. She turns to the one man who could possibly help her, the silver-tongued pirate, legendary Wolf of the Wild, Faolan. He thinks her magic can help him find a legendary island and promises that the island can rid her of her curse. But Saoirse knows better than to trust a man's word. If he wants her on his ship, it'll have to be as his wife.
It's one of those stories that grows on you as you discover why the characters behave as they do. It took me a moment to warm up to Saoirse's defeatist attitude, but Rapier shows that somewhere inside the abused girl is a woman who's willing to risk it all for what she wants. It's moments like those that kept me turning pages. And it's not just Saoirse, it's all the characters who keep showing different sides of themselves and showing why every character on the page should be distinct. Not only did I walk away hooked on the story of Saoirse and Faolan, I also need the stories behind the adventures his crew had before this one begins.
My one complaint is that even though it's almost always justified, the are moments when the drama gets to be a little too much for my liking in romantasy. I get the why, I just don't enjoy it.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group | Ace for the twisty magical read!
