Selene Alleva is a Vatican exorcist tasked with eliminating the worst of the demons attacking humanity. Jules Lacroix is an orphan who has survived the worst the battlefield has to offer. They find themselves bound together by a mystery that could topple their religion and everything they thought about their lives.
There is so much happening in this story. It's a base of enemies-to-lovers romance with a lot of angst and subterfuge covered in religious terminology and elements that coalesce into a mad dash of reveals and action towards the end. Not a single chapter is wasted in a story that keeps the hits coming and the pages turning.
Selene and Jules are a great pair, be it when they're fighting and distrustful or when they're doing their best to save each other. They're snippy and bantery in a fun way that continues even after they've accepted how they feel about each other. And best of all, they each have a complete character arc that goes way beyond them becoming a couple, making them individuals beyond the romance.
This is in no way a complaint, but I'm amazed at how spicy and violent the book got, considering it's technically meant for young readers. Nothing truly graphic and in no way bad, just enough for a raised eyebrow and a desire to warn people in case it's not their cup of tea.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Knopf Books for Young Readers for the magical read!
