Charlie is an advice columnist in a slump. To increase his numbers and make a living after the magazine he works for switches to a pay-per-click model, his editor and friend convinces him to explore the supernatural letters he receives. Except the only thing Charlie knows about the supernatural is that they've "come out" and are living among humans. Until a random run-in with Lorenzo, a college friend's ex who has an axe to grind, turns into an opportunity to know more about the supernatural community with a vampire guide. It started as two guys with agendas and slowly developed into so much more, but can what began as lies survive beyond them?
It's a very sweet romance with a nice little side quest about building community and how you're not as alone as you might think. Charlie and Lorenzo getting to know each other and opening up about themselves is the main part of the story, and it is almost saccharine sweet once they finally get together becuase they understand each other even as Charlie hides something very important.
But what really hit the spot for me was how Lorenzo taking Charlie to meet different types of supernaturals, made it obvious that he's not as alone as he thought, and Charlie had people on his corner as well, even when he thought he had to endure by himself. There's an underlying message of support and community that bolsters the romance quite nicely.
It's a much calmer type of paranormal romance that still keeps all the fun parts without getting too dark or violent. It made it a nice change of pace.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for the sweet paranormal read!
