Callie Michaels isn’t pretty or popular, but her singing more than makes up for all she lacks. And as long as she focuses on what’s really important, she can survive high school. But how can she focus with all the drama? Between her best friend’s odd issues and a daily dose of weirdness from the social elite, she’s starting to wonder if she’s the only normal one around.

Just as her life begins spiraling out of control, the answer comes to her in a dream. In exchange for a token of blood, a demon will give her everything she desires. She says “yes.” From that point on, she finds herself changing, becoming something far from normal. Something dangerous.

No one is what they seem—least of all her. While the supernatural creatures around her struggle to maintain their humanity, Callie slowly loses hers. She doesn’t even know what’s important anymore. Friendship, the future, love? And is there anyone who can make her care? - Goodreads

This book was all over the place and it took a while for me to fully grasp what I was reading. So let's start with characters:

Callie is not likable at all. 16 years old, her backbone is nonexistent, she speaks in a whinny tone, she knows nothing and for most of the book, she just went along with everything and allowed herself to manipulated. I get it you're 16, emotions are different and lines you didn't know were there are starting to show but Callie had no real drive in her and she came off desperate even at the end of the book (yes, I finished the book).

Her best friend was crappy and every male character around Callie was a tool.

Now for the romance . . . if you had to describe teenage lust in a series of images, it would be Callie's romance with her childhood friend. The emotion was there, but barely and it was forced and that friendship that Callie was pushing was weak .

The overall story left a lot of holes. There is a lot of backstory missing and things take too long to start. As mentioned previously, Callie goes with a lot of things without even really thinking about it. Due to her weak personality, the story goes from I had a bad dream to I don't know why I can't remember what happened the day before but okay. This goes on for chapters and again Callie's best friend is crappy.

The pace moves very slow and the fantasy aspect of the book isn't as developed as it should of been and could have been. The story could have been built on a lot of magic, mythology and history. It would have made a really good read, despite Callie.

Overall,

1 Pickle

This book was reviewed on my blog a very long time ago. Since then I have migrated to a new blogging home and this review is either hiding in my archives or somewhere in the ether. (Sad times)
