Holly Jackson? Absolutely how dare you inflict this amount of trauma on me!
Here I was thinking I'm the best detective in the world picking up all the clues and foreshadowing, only to be proven...wrong.
This was such a great story and absolutely what I needed to pull myself out of a book slump.
The story starts off my introducing us to the cast of characters that are potential suspects for Jet's eventual murder. She wakes up in the hospital with a week to live and is determined to figure out who her killer is.
I think I went through all the stages of grief while reading this. Even though the synopsis literally says Jet is going to die I was in denial. Like I was thinking there's absolutely no way she dies, she's the main character, a miracle happens right, RIGHT?!?!?! My absolute favorite thing about this story is that it's not predictable. I was so sure it was at least 3 different people and all of my guesses ended up being wrong. I really love when a book can challenge me and make me think. You absolutely will be on the edge of your seat wanting to find out who the killer is. It broke my brain to be honest, but it was quite satisfying. I need something stronger than therapy after this. Ballantine and Holly Jackson, you'll be hearing from my lawyers!
Apart from being a really cool thriller, this book also explores what it really means to live. I think every character in the book is deeply unhappy, besides Billy. For Jet and her family, the root of their unhappiness is her mother. Both Jet and Luke are living in the shadow of their sister, thanks to their mother–Diane. Diane is 10/10 such a horrible person, selfish if you ask me. Anyway, I like to think that Jet found her true happiness while searching for her killer. For the first time, she's able to just be. There's virtually no consequences for her so it's sort of freeing. I don't think Jet wanted to solve the murder to finally do something "meaningful", but rather to do something that was just for her. In the end I think she learned her value and how important she was to those around her.
The book is 11/10, absolutely no notes.

I love anything Holly Jackson writes. This is her first adult thriller and it was so good! It’s almost 400 but it did not feel like and I sped through it.
Jet was attacked and now she has a week to find out who attacked her before she is dead.
I loved this book. I did not guess who the killer was and I love when I get it wrong. It was fast paced through out the entire book. Jet has the best Bad A** personality and was not leaving solving her murder up to the police.
Even though we’re told through out the book that Jet was solving her own murder. The ending broke my heart. Thanks Holly for ruining me.

This is the first book I've read by Holly Jackson, and although it started off slow, it grew on me—and don't even get me started on the ending! The plot is pretty self-explanatory from the title, "Not Quite Dead Yet," but I was not prepared for the twists it would take. Jet's life was derailed when her older sister passed away, leaving her anxious as she tried to fill her sister's shoes. She struggles to meet her parents' expectations but never quite follows through. She thinks she has plenty of time—until she doesn't. Her brother Luke is married with kids, works for their father's business, and is the clear choice to take over when their dad retires. And then there's Billy, her lifelong friend, who has secretly been in love with her all along. When another tragedy strikes the family and Jet is attacked and left for dead, she becomes determined to solve her own attempted murder, because she’s not quite dead yet.
The story had an intriguing premise with numerous twists, some of which completely blindsided me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a big fan of most of the characters, especially Jet—I found her immature and repetitive. And you really have to suspend disbelief about a woman with a head injury leaving the hospital to solve her own murder; you’d expect she’d be dealing with a massive headache! There were a lot of suspects, and it was fun narrowing them down. But the real standout for me was Billy—kind, gentle Billy. Everyone needs a friend like him. Despite the slow start, this was an enjoyable read with a perfect ending!

In a genre where predictability can sometimes be an issue, this novel refreshingly defies expectations. I can often anticipate plot twists and endings, but this one genuinely surprised me, delivering a satisfying conclusion. One of the most unique and compelling aspects of the book is its premise involving a dying character. Initially, I wasn't sure how I would connect with this element, but the author handles it well, making it not just work, but enhance the story's depth and urgency. It adds a layer of emotional resonance that elevates it beyond a typical thriller.

I've read most of Holly Jackson's other books, so I was interested in reading her adult novel but it just didn't work for me. It read just like her YA books. The concept was unique, but I found Jet to be very child-like and not really likable. I just couldn't really get into it.

I loved the premise of this story. Then taking the journey with our main character Jet as she tries to solver her own murder. The twist and turns this story takes is so surprising. I wanted to tell off so many characters, and felt that others got off too easy. Then that ending .. what the heck?! I wanted to see everyone’s dirty laundry brought to justice finally. Including the brother and the mom.

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this one. I thought that the concept was incredibly interesting and had a lot of promise. Overall, I think that this book went on a little too long and could have been shorter. There was a lot of information thrown at the reader and some of it was relevant and some wasn't.
The thing that this book did right was compel me to keep reading. However, I found that I only kept reading because I wanted to see if she would live, not because I cared about who the killer was. I did also enjoy the written letters towards the end of the book as well.
This book was incredibly bleak and sad. Between Billy pinning over a girl who doesn't love him back and Jet having seven days to live, I just felt heavy every time I would pick it up to read. This was not one of my favorite works by this author. I know that there are people out there who absolutely loved and will love this book. I just don't think it was quite for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC copy.

I tried loving Holly's writing with the 'A Good Girl's Guide to Murder' series and just didn't love it. However, I'm not typically a YA reader. When I found out Holly was releasing an adult thriller, I was so excited to give it a try! As it turns out, Holly's writing style just isn't for me. So many people love her writing style and books-and I love that for them-so, I will refrain from sharing my thoughts anywhere but here and allow people to enjoy, love, hype-up, and be excited for her newest release. Best wishes and thank you so much for the opportunity to read 'Not Quite Dead Yet' before pub day! Xx

I loved the concept of this and thought it was executed in a really nice way. My favorite part was the ending with the letters. The one addressed to the dog is so me.
Some things I didn’t enjoy was the over repetition over the fact she was going to die in a certain amount of days. Another thing was that it seemed swearing was just added to the story to make it adult. The rest of the book still felt YA.
Overall still a good read.

3.75
I was really taken with this concept even though the plot is far-fetched. The book was fast paced, and I was anxious following her investigation and diagnosis. I couldn't help laughing at Jet's darkly funny remarks sprinkled throughout the novel. Jet's playful exchanges with other characters was engaging, and there was a slow burning tension with Billy that left me craving more (the romantic in me might have expected a bit too much). The side characters really riled me up too. Most of them were pretty terrible humans and honestly, I would have loved even more payback and karma for them.
This book really caught me off guard with how emotional it made me. I found myself sobbing multiple times--who knew a thriller could hit this hard. Mainly I was triggered by the relationship and parts involving Jet/Billy. What beautiful souls.
The book did a fair job wrapping up. Towards the end it was a rollercoaster of emotions. And the twist--it was definitely a game of twister.
side note: the word 'sniffed' was used many times at the end of sentences, especially when speaking between characters, It was somewhat distracting as a reader.

Thank you, #Partner @ballantinebooks @randomhouse and @netgalley for my #gifted (free) copy. Pub date 7/22/25.
This was such a crazy ride! This is my first book by #HollyJackson so I can't really compare it to her popular series, but I did feel like this book read as a YA novel. This was more than just a thriller. It was emotional and totally original and I definitely would recommend it.
Jet is brutally attacked on Halloween night at her home with no witnesses. When she wakes up in the hospital the doctors predict that she will be dead within a week from an aneurysm. Jet has one week to solve her own murder.

Something happens to the main character that we all know is coming, but when it finally occurs it felt a bit anticlimactic and I was still sad about it. Holly Jackson thrillers have been really hit or miss for me, and this one was a hit. The events and plot with twists were strong, especially where her brother was concerned. My favorite part is when she hammers up the murder weapon.

It’s hard to write a review for this book without spoilers. But at the same time even the title reveals the biggest spoiler: Jet is dying. Get your tissue box handy if you’re a crier like me.
Honestly I wasn’t sure her death would be any great loss. Jet is abrasive, self centered, and just not all that likable. As the story goes on you start to realize Why. Like the rest of her family, Jet is haunted by the death of her sister. This doesn’t excuse her behavior but it makes you understand.
Holly Jackson has created a world of flawed characters. And one of them is Jet’s childhood friend Billy who must be protected at all costs.
I’m going to end with the author’s own words via instagram: “get ready to hate me more than you ever have before. I’m still mad at myself honestly…”.
Thank you so much to Holly Jackson, the publisher, and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read one of my favorite authors book early.

Holly Jackson delivers a gripping punch with her adult debut, Not Quite Dead. From the first page, the story charges forward and never looks back. Jet is a standout—complex, haunted, and impossible to forget. The entire cast carries their own shadows, adding layers of tension and intrigue. Jackson masterfully weaves a dark, fast-paced plot that’s as twisted as it is addictive. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. ★★★★★
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Random House Ballantine for the ARC!

oh. my. god.
this was the funniest and saddest book ever. Jet's humor was amazing. I mean she was constantly making jokes about how she was dying (literally) and barely anyone laughed. I got her dark humor and I appreciated it. I feel like I would be doing the same thing.
I was completely shocked by the ending. I did not see that coming at all. It wasn't even a possibility for me and wasn't in my top five guesses either.
And I don't know why, but I did not think she was actually going to die. I thought she might have been saved at the last minute, but nope. It was so sad, but at least she got to go at peace with herself.
All of her books have an ending that do not give a ton of closure. And I don't think it's a bad thing. Everything is mostly up for your own interpretation. I'm also glad she shows that although we find out what happened in the end, sometimes there is no true happy ending to these stories.

In Not Quite Dead Yet, we follow the journey of a young woman, Jet, who is given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—she gets to solve her own murder. Yes, you read that right! After being viciously attacked, Jet is left with just seven days to uncover the truth behind her death before the clock runs out. And let me tell you, it's one heck of a rollercoaster ride!
Jet is one of those characters who leaves a lasting impression. She's loud, unapologetically opinionated, and full of life. Her personality keeps the story entertaining and adds a unique energy to the plot. However, as much as I loved her vibrant voice and sharp wit, I couldn’t shake the bittersweet feeling of knowing, deep down, she was destined for a tragic end. Despite knowing her time was so limited, I got attached to her.
The book is an exhilarating blend of suspense, raw emotion, and high stakes. Every page felt like a countdown to something inevitable, which kept me on the edge of my seat. The writing itself is sharp and engaging, drawing you into Jet’s world and her desperate, yet determined, search for answers. Despite the heavy premise, the story never feels too bleak, thanks to Jet’s humor and resilience.
Ultimately, Not Quite Dead Yet is a fun, unpredictable read that’s definitely worth the time. If you’re into stories that keep you hooked with suspense and heart, this one will have you gripped from start to finish!

Premise: 1st adult thriller from author of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. When a deadly attack leaves Jet with a traumatic brain injury & a diagnosis of 1 week to live, she vows to use her final days to solve her own murder.
Thoughts: Some authors peak with their 1st success, but Holly Jackson’s adult debut proves she’s just getting started. While innovative plots are a given, it’s her characterization that takes things next level. Jet—the book’s “not quite dead yet” POV character—is so alive with her sharp edges and sharper mind. I find her gallows humor particularly appealing. Weaving the plot of the mystery through the relationships Jet shares with her friends, family, and community members adds such depth, creating heartwarming and thought-provoking subplots. But for those, like me, who show up for the plot: Jackson did not disappoint. While this is not the 1st solve-your-own-murder mystery I’ve read, it is the 1st where the protagonist has been murdered. She’s just not quite dead yet. And the author does such a good job of exposing some characters’ motives while obfuscating others’ that I kept ping-ponging between culprits until nearly the end. There are a couple of plot holes that kept me from awarding a perfect score—should a person with an impending brain aneurysm be driving??--but I’m willing to overlook those on the strength of the story overall. If you love Holly Jackson or are just in search of your next great read, definitely pick up Not Quite Dead Yet. But maybe have those tissues handy.

"Not Quite Dead Yet" is Holly Jackson's adult debut. I really liked her young adult series, "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder," and have eagerly been awaiting this novel. Overall, it was an enjoyable mystery with a unique plot. The premise is so clever, and I was drawn in by the first few chapters. But then the pacing got a bit slower, and I was just kind of waiting for something to happen. While I certainly enjoyed this book, I would say it lacked a bit in the thrills department. The last 20% or so of the book was definitely the most exciting with some jaw-dropping twists. The main character is 27, but the book did still have a bit of a YA vibe. That's not necessarily a bad thing because I think readers of all ages will enjoy this book.

Goodreads Review:
I have yet to find a Holly Jackson book I didn't love and this is no exception.
We follow our main character Jet who is attempting to solve her own murder. Not in like a paranormal ghost way, but in the way that she gets attacked and is given a week to live. And what better way to spend your final days then playing amateur detective?
Admittedly the beginning was a bit slow for me to get into because Jet isn't the most loveable of a character, she gives grown up Pip vibes but Im more tolerable of teen characters being kinda dumb. However after a bit she did grow on me, and I guess if you're dying you can get a bit of slack on being a perfectly polite person.
Billy, on the other hand, was my absolute favorite character. He really carried the book for me because he was just so sweet
I can't really put much else in my review without it being a spoiler and I'm so sad I read this before release and cant force any of my friends to read it yet so we can talk about 😭 I'm just gonna say, the ending ?!?!? and leave it there
5/5 great book, highly recommend.

Most of my big thoughts on this book are spoilers so this will be a very brief review, instead I'll say here someone please read it on release day and talk about it with me because it's still occupying a big portion of my brain 🫣
This book was a rollercoaster for me and I was even crying by the end (and usually books where it's known from the beginning there will be a bad end don't usually get to me)
I loved Good Girls Guide to Murder and The Reappearance of Rachel Price so obviously I went into this with very high hopes (which obviously were matched). We follow our main character Jet who gets attacked and then told "well you got like a week to live now" and of course what else would you do then try and play amateur detective and solve your own murder?
Jet isn't the most likeable of main characters but it honestly makes her feel like a real person, which then makes the whole book hit harder. She's just a person who's still figuring life out, and it made me want to root for her.
It was admittedly maybe a bit cliche at times but I didn't end up guessing the ending so it achieved all I usually need from a thriller book. Now don't mind me I'm about to go break my book buying ban (...again) to go place a preorder for a physical copy from my local bookstore

I've loved all of Holly Jackson's YA books and her adult debut blew past all of my expectations. Not Quite Dead Yet was packed with tension, urgency, and unforgettable characters. The premise alone was chilling. Jet Mason, given a week to live after a brutal attack, decides to spend her final days solving her own murder. What followed was a clever, high-stakes mystery that unfolded like a ticking clock.
Jet was a compelling and layered heroine. Watching her grapple with her mortality while navigating secrets, betrayals, and fractured relationships made this story not only suspenseful but deeply moving. The dynamic between her and her childhood friend, Billy, added warmth and heart to the cold paranoia that crept through every chapter.
Holly Jackson’s signature style with fast pacing, smart twists, and whip-sharp dialogue translated perfectly into the adult thriller genre. Every suspect felt plausible, and the final reveal was both shocking and satisfying. I loved how the story balanced dark humor with emotional depth and the reminder that sometimes it takes facing death to really choose life. This was a thrilling ride from start to finish. I could not put it down!
