Thank you to i30 Media Corporation, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles, the author and NetGalley for a digital ARC in return for an honest review.

I have been researching my family history for over 20 years. It has been a wild ride. It has involved trawling through books, painstakingly deciphering handwritten documents and, eventually, going online and undertaking DNA tests with close family members. There have been tears of joy, when reuniting with family overseas, tears of sadness as I've slowly uncovered the lives of lost loved ones, screams of rage as I hit brick walls left, right and centre and genuine shock as I discover family members we never knew existed. Overall the experience has enriched my life and that of my wider family as I have travelled back in time, through centuries past, to learn about those who share my DNA. I am always on the look out for new tools, whether it be in bookshops or online, so when I joined NetGalley recently, I requested this guide by Ian Lamont. Whilst I am in no way a beginner, it made interesting reading. If you are new to family tree research this would probably be a good guide to get you started. It's not particularly useful for accomplished family historians, but I think it's still worth a look, even if it's just to learn about Lamont's own backstory. I must say I do slightly envy newbies these days just starting out on your journey - you wouldn't believe how long it took to track down an ancestors marriage record or where they worked. Back in the day it could've taken days as opposed to hours (or in some cases seconds) these days with online websites such as Ancestry.co.uk!

I agree with Lamont about how important it is to preserve family stories. There is such value in reaching out to relatives and getting them to share their own memories and also how crucial and fun genealogy road trips can be. The guide also gives tips for organizing records and photos, It is such a joyous moment to share your discoveries with family. Because this is a basic beginners guide, DNA research isn't covered in much depth, so you will have to go elsewhere to find out more information about this particular (in my opinion) crucial and very rewarding aspect of research. Ultimately the author shows that storytelling in genealogy is vital and encourages family historians to see beyond just the collecting of names and dates but to delve deeper to uncover all those fascinating family histories.

I look forward to Volume 2.

This is a great book for anyone who is new to or already doing some genealogy. It was full of tips and information to help learn more about family history. I really enjoyed reading through it and learning from it. I wish I would have read a book like this when I first started doing genealogy but am still glad to have found it even now after years of dabbling in it a little bit at a time. The book is nicely written in a way that I feel is reader friendly and can help someone who really doesn't have a clue what they are doing or someone who has already gotten there feet wet which makes it a versatile book.

I've been wanting help with this topic, and this is a fantastic intro guide. There are tips on how to find the information you need to learn your family history -- not just names, but real stories. There are also warnings on some things that can go wrong, and these were helpful too. For instance, some sources aren't as reliable and it showed how to verify some information.

Great Introduction

As someone who has enjoyed researching Genealogy this is a great introduction to those just starting out. The terminology used is very reader friendly and someone with zero experience can dive into it.

This would complement a membership to a genealogy subscription nicely.

I received a copy of this book from Ian Lamont and i30 Media Corporation | Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles. I have elected to leave a review. All opinions are my own.

A nice introduction to genealogy in an informal conversational type way.

I liked how the author included real world examples of the techniques discussed, which elevates this book from a bland how to.

The book 'does what it says on the tin' and gives you a nice overview of the first steps to starting your family tree without spending hours pouring over an instruction manual, whilst providing some helpful further resources at the authors website.

Looking forward to the next volumes being released to dig further into the past of my family tree!

I am a genealogist for the past 30 years and I found this book very helpful. I will apply several tips to my own work. Wishing I would have had that resource years ago! I will need this for my reference shelf! Thank you for allowing me to review this book.

This is an incredible introduction into the study of genealogy, and it's something that will help even the most shaky of beginners.

My thanks to NetGalley and publishers for a copy of “ Genealogy In Thirty Minutes “ for an honest review.

This was a quick basic guide to help those looking into their family history.
It catered more for an American reader , and someone new to researching, but I still found it interesting and informative

I have mixed feelings... It's very clear that this is a series of newsletters published in book form, and I'm not sure if the format suits me. It felt like each article was missing a lot of substance. On the other hand, it is definitely not your average genealogy how-to guide. Will be looking forward to next volumes as this was definitely tips for people far less experienced in family history than I.

Thanks to Ian Lamont, i30 Media, and NetGalley for access to the Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As a person who has dabbled in genealogy, this collection of essays provides great perspective and background for the important things to do first. This is not a book that will provide you with a step-by-step methodology for filling out a family tree. Rather it will help you understand and achieve the true goal – learning more about your family through stories from a variety of sources.

A quick and engaging read, I like the 30 Minute concept. Recommended and I look forward to more books in this series and from this publisher.

This is an intro to genealogy. The author is biased towards hard copies of genealogy documents which is different from my personal perspective. Nonetheless, a good read.

This was a great book. Thanks to this author, I didn't get a full night's sleep last night. It was well-written and very informative. I only wish I had read this before I worked on my family tree. I would probably been able to avoid some frustration. On the good side, I now know better how to go back over what I have already done and make everything easier to understand. Read it and reap.
