Jules loves the lakeside community she grew up in. She dreams of going to medical school and returning to offer the locals the kind of care that isn't available to them without a lot of hassle and travel, but her mother's careless actions killed that dream. She's learned to be content with her job as a nurse in a care facility when one of her eccentric charges leaves her the town's dilapidated dance hall. When a guy from her past comes to town looking to buy the dance hall from her, Jules finds herself in a position to fulfill her dream and find love in the process. She has doubts and wishes Kitty were there to give her advice, so she turns to the next best thing, Kitty's diary from 50 years ago.
The best word to describe this book is charming. From the characters to the setting, it will charm you into delving deep and connecting with every single character. Jules and Reeve are super relatable in their completely opposite ways, and how they try so hard to adjust to each other's sensibilities. The moments we spend in the past are the heart of the story, even more than the romance; it's about Kitty finding love and making hard choices. Kitty is the type of older lady I hope to one day be, so it's cool to see her inspiring Jules to take her life into her own hands.
A lot of the plot is about talking things out and letting others know how you're feeling so they can be there to support you and you're not just imagining how they'll react. It's a point to make in general, and something that you don't often get in romance, so props to Robb for showing so many examples of how communication makes things better.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Dial Press Trade Paperback for the charming romance read!
