I had a really fantastic time reading this book! I've read one of her other books and I really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to getting to know these characters and this world! The history, the politics, and the relationships between these characters were just all so great to read!

Apparently this book is a good entry way into the series, but I didn't do much research before requesting this book, or preparation by reading the trilogy set before the start of this series, which is my bad. I'm going to have to go back and read those books, and soon, before I forget details about this world!

I really enjoyed getting to know these 3 as they were on the run, trying to find her dad, and dealing with all the people that were after this stone. I'm not sure if there's going to be romance, but there certainly was attraction there!

The set of this plot was really interesting and fast paced, and the story was over before I knew it, leaving me with questions, that have me itching to continue on with the series. I need to know why Ash would stay, and how he was going to get out of the situation that he was in. It was just so good!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to continue the series, and read more by Annette Marie!

I’m a big fan of Annette Marie – love her adult urban fantasy books. This was solidly written but aimed at a YA audience and obviously produced nearer the start of her writing career. It’s a decent book with a well-built world and good characters. It didn’t resonate for me as well as her later books do.

Rating: 4 stars
Thank you for the opportunity to review this title. I found this book to be a captivating and imaginative start to a fantasy series with a lot of promise.
The world features a mix of supernatural beings — dragonkin, incubi, djinn, and demons — hidden within a modern society governed by a mysterious magical hierarchy. While the worldbuilding conceptually is strong, it would benefit from greater depth and clarification. Certain magical rules and political structures were hinted at, but not always explained in a way that fully grounded me in the story.

Strengths:
Strong character archetypes. I particularly appreciated Lyr, whose role as an incubus was written with restraint and integrity. He was compelling without being overbearing.
The dragonkin character Ash was intriguing, especially in how he struggled with dominance, control, and identity.
Piper’s arc is still forming, but I liked her tone and internal conflict.
The pacing was quick and made the book easy to finish in just a couple of sittings.
The audiobook’s female narration was notably well-performed, especially in expressing Piper’s emotions and sarcasm.

Areas for improvement:
The plot felt a bit disjointed at times, with several action scenes lacking clarity. The climax in particular was difficult to visualize due to sudden shifts and vague staging.
Many key elements — the significance of the magical stone “Sahar,” the structure of demon society, the heroine’s mysterious powers — were introduced but left underdeveloped.
The story often hinted at major lore and background, but rarely expanded on it, which left some confusion about the stakes.

Overall Impression:
I finished this book with more questions than answers — but in a good way. The characters, especially Ash and Lyr, show great potential for further development. While the worldbuilding needs more structure, I’m invested enough to continue the series. I hope future installments expand on the mythology and bring emotional clarity to the larger conflict.
I would recommend this title to readers who enjoy fantasy-romance hybrids with modern settings, light political intrigue, and supernatural beings struggling with their dual natures.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The world-building was immersive, and the voice acting was excellent. It’s a bit of a shame that it ends on a cliffhanger—I’m eager to find out what happens next. I also appreciated the creative use of Greek mythology in the characters and storyline. Overall, it’s a compelling read, and I’m excited to see more from this author and the narrators.

When's the next book being released please???
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, so thank you muchly for allowing me the pleasure of listening to it!
I fell in love with the characters and the story plot was interesting, though the only thing I would say it a lot happened without a lot happening in the story progression. There was a lot of references and building up to future plots and actions which makes me believe the sequels are going to be amazing. But as I said, it felt like the main character was just sort of running around with the male protagonist for majority of the book like headless chickens with no certain path forward. However that being said there was a lot of action scenes and tension that kept me wanting to learn more.
Lets talk about the romance....because god damn was that slow burn! Low SLOW burn. Even the kiss wasn't the kiss I'm sure all use readers were desperate for. As quoted by Scuttle from little Mermaid ' just kiss da girl' but with a bit more frustration.

Nevertheless, enjoyed and want more of it! Please and thanks xoxoxox

What begins as a familiar setup—a demon navigating life in the human world—quickly evolves into something far more engaging. This story is packed with suspense, with just the right touch of romance to keep things emotionally compelling without overshadowing the plot.

Ash is a standout character. Despite countless chances to lean into his darker instincts, he consistently chooses loyalty and connection—especially when it comes to Piper and their small circle. The dynamic between this unlikely trio creates a surprisingly strong and heartfelt bond that drives the story forward. A genuinely enjoyable and memorable read!

This was such a good book. I loved the story and the writing so much. The characters were great and the story flowed smoothly. Will definitely read more books by this author in the future.

Piper was given the Sahar stone to keep safe. But then her home was attacked and her father and uncle was taken. Now it’s up to her, non magical, Asher, demon, and Lyre the incubus to help save them all.

Piper learned more from being with Ash when he was shading. That not all demons are blind killers.

After reading this book, I'm very excited for the rest of the Steel & Stone series. This opening book was a fast-paced urban fantasy adventure that’s both accessible and engaging, especially in audiobook form. Piper, a determined and likable protagonist with no magic, finds herself thrust into a world of daemons, danger, and intrigue. The chemistry between Piper and her daemon companions, Ash and Lyre, is a highlight, adding layers of tension, snark, and slow-burn camaraderie to the story.

The two narrators' performances bring the characters vividly to life. The male's expressive delivery adds depth and distinction, while the female's energy matches Piper’s youthful determination. Some listeners may find her tone a bit high-pitched for their taste, but overall, the narration is engaging and helps maintain the story’s momentum.

The author's worldbuilding is well-paced, introducing fantasy elements in digestible steps that never overwhelm. The plot kicks off with a magical artifact theft and rarely slows down, blending action, mystery, and a touch of humor. Piper’s journey—balancing vulnerability, stubbornness, and resourcefulness—anchors the narrative, while Ash and Lyre’s contrasting personalities keep things dynamic.

There were a few minor drawbacks, including the overall feel, which is far more YA than true romantasy. (Plus side if you're looking for an urban fantasy book for your kid/teen -- the romance is quite tame and clean.) Also, some of the character development was lacking, and a few of the big plot twists were... eh... a little predictable. Also, as I mentioned, the female's voice could be a teensy bit irritating at times.

Still, the book is an entertaining entry point for urban fantasy fans and newcomers. The audiobook’s dual narration adds vibrancy, even if not every voice will suit all tastes. With its blend of action, attitude, and just enough intrigue, it's a solid 4-star listen—one that leaves you eager for the next installment.

It's a first time I try fantasy and got so addicted in the story I honestly love it each and every scene of it

Such a fun and unique fantasy world with a good dose of mystery and twists. Really enjoyed Piper's determination and her interactions with both Lyre and Ash. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Thank you @NetGalley and @RBmedia for the ALC. I have not read a book by Annette Marie but I will now. This is the first book in the Steel & Stone series and I can not wait for book two. This is a mythical world with demons and humans. Piper is left with a powerful relic that will only work for the chosen one. Lucifer and others want it and will kill to get it. Piper has two men that might help her or hurt her.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrators were great to listen to. I wish it could have been a duet but that's just a personal preference. The story really drew me in and was action packed and had me guess along the way. The characters were great and I loved how well they worked together.

I love a good urban fantasy book and that’s exactly what this is! I really enjoyed the world the author built because it did have some aspects that are just copy/paste when it comes to books in the genre. I did find some of the world building a little jumbled since it was a lot of info to sort through at once instead of spread out throughout the first book.
I loved the remake protagonist! The lack of magic was refreshing as in she had to rely on her skills and knowledge of her world in regards to how she grew up and who her dad is.
The two male characters aren’t too bad themselves (fans self). I love that they had actual character building and personalities. I also enjoy that there is tension rather than true “love” interest to start off this book. I can’t wait to see how it all develops!

The narrator was fantastic too!

Okay, so I dove into Chase the Dark by Annette Marie, and it was a fun ride! This is the first book in the Steel & Stone series, and it's got a good mix of urban fantasy, action, and some slow-burn romance.

The story follows Piper, who's training to be a Consul (someone who keeps the peace between humans and daemons). But things go south when a magical artifact is stolen, and Piper gets caught in the middle. Now she's on the run with two daemons: Lyre, who's flirty and fun, and Ash, who's the strong, silent, and mysterious type.

What I liked:
- The characters! Piper is a strong, likable heroine, and the dynamic between her, Lyre, and Ash is entertaining.
- The world-building is well done. The mix of daemons, magic, and human society is fascinating.

What I didn't love as much:
- It's a YA, so if you're looking for something super gritty or graphic, this might not be it.
- Some of the tropes are a bit familiar, but the author puts her own spin on them in a way that still works.

Overall, I'd say Chase the Dark is a great read if you're into urban fantasy with a touch of romance. It's entertaining, the characters are engaging, and it'll definitely leave you wanting to read the next book in the series. It's fast-paced and action-packed, so there's never a dull moment. However, this story reads exactly as a 'Book One', so it's an introduction to the series. I felt like the real story just started at the ending.

Chase The Dark was a good listen overall. The narrators were great, but the story did seem to be slow at times. Was longing for a bit more romance and I think the book could’ve been shorter for the events that occurred. I liked the characters and the potential for an interesting story is there. Maybe book two will have more to it.

This story starts out as a typical demon in a human world trying to fit in or make things work, but that is where boring ends. This book is full of suspense and romance. Just enough romance to keep things interesting. Ash has lots of opportunities to show how horrible he is, but each time, he chooses Piper or a friend. This unlikely trio makes for an unlikely team. Really a great read !

This was an amazing book. It had the perfect amount of mystery, chaos, and adventure. I was absolutely hooked from the beginning and cannot wait to see where else the characters go. I need to know more about Ash, especially. It was a dystopian fantasy, with lots of action that will keep pulling you along. I appreciated the trust the characters developed in each other during their trials.

I listened to this book, and the narrators did an amazing job bringing these characters to life!

I need to know what happens next, and I can't wait for the next book!

I was given an ALC in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts and opinions above are my own. I'm so appreciative to Tantor Audio & NetGalley for giving me the opportunity.

An entertaining slowburn dystopian fantasy with great characters, world building and fast paced storyline. The narrators really brought it to life. I’m interested to see where this series goes.

Thanks to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for allowing me to listen and review this title.

Piper is an interesting character who has no magic. She wants to become a Consul, someone who keeps the peace between humans and daemons. So, with no magic of her own, she is a human herself. Only she isn’t, not really.

Lyre is an Incubus daemon. He is wicked and charming, and he knows it. He likes to flirt and annoy Piper, it’s pretty entertaining if I am being honest.

Ash is a Draconian daemon, very powerful, very dangerous.

A big meeting was about to happen, and Piper's father gave her something to protect. The Sahar Stone is only one of the topmost magical weapons of mass destruction, and well, everyone wants it.

This is was intense first book and I was so invested I can’t freaking wait for book two the way these 3 come together to protect the stone and each other even when there are ulterior motives at play.

The narration was top notch, both narrators gave this book that added suspense and tension, and I am a huge fan.
