Emersyn Gray is not in the best place in her life. She's recently unemployed, taking care of her niece after her brother died of cancer, and living in a rundown seniors-only apartment: The cherry on top? Her ex stole all her savings and has no intention of giving them back. Her best friend convinces her to threaten him with the made-up Wyatt Investigations, complete with fake business cards, and it's a total failure, except Emersyn does end up meeting a super hot, friendly stranger whose name actually is Wyatt. That would have been the end of it, except the building's super is murdered the next day, and her neighbors decide that Emersyn and her detective agency are the ones to solve the case.
It's an entertaining mystery, helped along by a wacky set of characters that make life interesting for Emersyn. The murder victim and case aren't particularly interesting in themselves, but getting to meet the people of the Mirage and seeing how they all support each other in little ways adds a lot to the story.
There's also a little bit of romance with two men vying for Emersyn's attention, although it's obvious from the moment they first meet who is going to eventually end up with her. It's not the main focus and it could conceivably not even be there with things working out the same, but I'll never turn down some good will they/won't they.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Bantam for the fun read!
