Kang Siying is a reanimation priestess. She helps the dead find their way back home and rest in peace. She isn't afraid of death, but she does fear losing her father. So when he collapses and a need for funds leads her to accept a strange job from a palace aide, all she cares about is getting the body to the capital as fast as possible. But it isn't a normal retrieval because the body is alive and just so happens to be the missing second prince. The journey home will test everything she believes in and endanger the entire kingdom and her heart.

Is it a bit predictable? Yes. Does it entertain and hook you anyway? Definitely.

Tsai gives you just enough information about Siying's abilities to help you believe that it's totally possible to reanimate bodies and that it's a normal thing. Aside from that, the story is a very straightforward tale of a pampered royal getting their eyes opened by getting to experience the life of their subjects and how that can change everything. Woven into that, we get two very different people getting to know each other and finding out that their jagged edges match. There's banter and flirting interwoven with deep emotional hits and serious political intrigue, which is not a combo you'd think would be successful, but it hooks you because it's expertly managed by Tsai.

I loved the characters, was intrigued by the world, and was hooked by the plot. It's an excellent read that delivers on everything promised by the premise.

Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for the excellent read!
