Darcy's perfect life crumbled when the news that her ex had passed away sent her into a mental health episode that left her reeling and having to face the 5-year relationship that defined her college years. Ben was 10 years older than her and nice, but she broke up with him when she realized that not only was nice not enough, she was also a lesbian. Years later, happily married and working as a librarian, she finds Ben's obituary and crashes with guilt that it might have been her fault. Barely back at work after medical leave, it's to face opposition to the library's views on intellectual freedom and DEI programs. Darcy will have to work hard to figure out how she really feels about the relationships and situations in her life.

Darcy is a very relatable character, despite us not having much more in common than being bibliophiles and women. She has feelings she doesn't know how to process, but she grew up mainly being taught that feelings aren't to be expressed. I loved that a lot of the story time is dedicated to her being in therapy and keeping at it despite not being sure if or how it's working, becuase it shows that it's not a magical cure. You have to keep at it even when it's uncomfortable.

I also loved the way Austin handled opposing viewpoints, the challenges to DEI and books, and the importance of libraries as more than just spaces for kids, but as community centers that offer many kinds of support to those who need it. It's a very balanced take on it that puts a spotlight on how it's possible to approach disagreement without becoming a fight; it's all about accepting that everyone is entitled to their opinion and welcome to disagree.

Overall, it's a very quick read that gives you much to think about without ever feeling preachy. A satisfying read all around.

Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for the interesting read!
