Princess Aurora grew up treated as a fragile thing that didn't get a say in her life. She knows she's nothing but a pretty bauble for her father to eventually trade for profit. When the day comes when she's betrothed, it's to the savagely violent lord of the Borderlands, Sebastian, whose favorite pastime is forcing enemy werewolves to fight to the death. On the eve of the wedding, Aurora witnesses an Alpha fight a weaker boy and begs to save his life, then sneaks into the dungeon to tend to his wounds. What she doesn't know is that the wolves are there to steal something from the castle and ready to escape, which ends up with her going with them and setting off on a journey that will lead to her questioning all she knows and finding that the heart she thought stone can still feel love.
There is so much to love and explore in this story. From Aurora slowly realizing that everything she knew was suspect to Cal's Alpha possessiveness, coupled with his desire not to frighten her, and the complex machinations taking place around them without them really knowing about it, every chapter in this book has something to pull you in and not let go.
My one tiny nitpick is the inclusion of the dreaded love triangle. I feel like there's going to be a massive reveal behind it later on that proves it wasn't ever really a love triangle, but it's something I can't stand in romance. It's been done, and overdone. Please find a different way to add conflict and tension.
All that said, I'm looking forward to the next book, not just because of the romance and wanting to see Rory and Cal's romance grow, but because Palphreyman drops a bunch of hints that things are coming and they seem exciting.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Bloom Books for the fierce read!
