Vaasa was torn from her husband's arms and taken back to the land that views her as nothing more than a political pawn. With her power taken over by Ozik, a cunning Zetyr witch, and men trying to rule her life from all directions, she'll have to learn how to fully control her magic if she hopes to ever make it back to Reid.
Vaasa spends so much of this book in what feels like she's wallowing in victimhood that I was despairing at how far the series had fallen after just one volume. But I was doing Robinson a disservice, because there are reasons behind absolutely everything that happens, and they always lead to either major plot reveals or character growth. Stick with her. Let her cook, and you'll get complex political powerplay to go along with the romance.
I do wish that Reid and the rescue party had gotten a bit more page time simply because I feel like the maneuvering of pirates in a regimented city would make for a fun addition to the overall darkness of the book.
So many things get revealed towards the end that it left my mind reeling and salivating at what could come next. Can't wait to read what happens next.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and S&S/Saga Press for the fascinating read!
