Abby McIntyre crossed the Atlantic to interview for a social media job with a football club in Liverpool, despite calling it soccer and knowing absolutely nothing about the sport. It's just one of several impulsive actions she takes to escape the city where she has too many memories with her ex-fiancé, and the beginning of a wonderful life adventure that will see her finding a kindred spirit in a Scottish footballer and a found family that will help her heal and grow.
I was hooked from the very first line, where Abby tells the person interviewing her that she doesn't like soccer. It sets up the fun tone of the story and gives you so much insight into where Abby is in life. Her life is a mess, partly of her own making, and she's run away instead of facing things, but it's all so relatable that you're cheering her on from the moment she turns things around in the interview and manages to land the job.
Her relationship with Scottish midfielder Lachlan Ramsay is enviable and adorable despite the hiccup of him still being married, because it grows naturally and feels like a friendship that can blossom into more almost immediately. And the vibes and support that everyone else on the team and staff are a workplace dream in the vein of Ted Lasso, where it's a very strange, but loving family that is there to support each other and push for greatness.
It's a fantastic read full of heart and growth that entertained me while keeping all my emotions engaged.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine | Dell for the emotional romance read!
