Paisley is still reeling from finding out what her magic affinity is and the danger that puts her in when her former enemy, sometimes ally, Logan Kingston, shows up to claim her as his mate. It's only the beginning of a second year of college that will see her facing curses, family secrets, and a battle to stay alive when the entire magical community fears what she's capable of.
It's more old-school urban fantasy with a new adult twist than romantasy, so I think that my love for that disappearing genre might have contributed to how much I liked this. Either way, I liked both Paisley and Logan and their super-strong mate bond. It's a little out of nowhere after almost the entirety of the first book was them clashing and declaring hatred for each other, but it's a nice escalation of enemies-to-lovers. The magic that Paisley possesses gets explored and explained as she discovers what she can truly do and what that means for the magical world at large, which makes for a nice counterpoint to the predominant smexy and protective mate moments. I also enjoyed the interactions between her and his friends and how conveniently everyone paired off. A novella around those relationships would be kind of cool to get.
My major bone of contention is that all the conflicts are done and solved in the blink of an eye, and there don't seem to be any major repercussions for the things that happen during. I can't go into details to avoid spoilers. Let's just say that even in the ending battle, where major spells are performed, and then it's suddendly all talked out and everyone's cool with everything. A little too conveniently resolved.
It can very easily be understood even if you haven't read the first book in the series. You'll miss all the enemies-to-lovers goodness, but the big shadow daddy energy more than makes up for it. Kudos to Eve for explaining things in such a natural way that you don't realize you're getting info you should already have and making the second volume accessible to new readers.
