Vikir Von Baskerville was a loyal hound to his house for 40 years, which got rewarded with a betrayal and false accusations that saw him executed. Except instead of death, he finds himself waking up in the past, as a baby who retained all the memories of what is to come and is laser-focused on getting revenge. He'll survive and conquer the brutal training of a hound if it means getting that revenge.
Life do-over mangas are getting really popular and common, which means that most of them tend to hit the same points over and over. So I'm truly impressed with the way that Step on a LEGO managed to take those same points and keep me interested. Even knowing where things are headed and what's going to happen, I was deeply invested in seeing Vikir's story progress. A big part of it is that the world is complex without it feeling like I'm expected to know things, and Vikir always takes the time to narrate things over the action of setting shots so that the reader never gets lost. I believe this might be due to TO WALK(REDICE STUDIO), who adapted it, so credit where credit is due. S.arang's art is okay in the dark, digital style that's the big thing right now, but I did have a couple of issues with how an 8-year-old girl is posed and presented a couple of times, so that took an entire star off my rating.
Overall, it's a satisfying first foray into a dark revenge fantasy full of action and magic that hooked me in and left me interested in seeing what could possibly come next.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Ize Press for the excellent read!
