I received a complimentary review copy of The Algonquin Reader: Spring 2017 from NetGalley.

The first page describes what's in this issue, with a brief paragraph introducing each author and what their content is about. There is a total of 6 book exceprts and 6 essays included. I really enjoyed being able to preview enough of the book to know whether I'd be interested enough to read the whole thing. What makes this sampler really unique is that there is an essay before each novel excerpt.

The Leavers by Lisa Ko was the standout excerpt of this collection for me - I enjoyed it so much I ended up checking it out from my local library. Ko's prose is engaging, and emotional without being over the top. The complexity of the story spills out in front of you, and you can't help but find yourself engrossed. Highly recommend.

After I saw them here I searched and read some of the books you published (although I did not see them all at Netgalley).

At the risk of repeating myself, I must say that I love the way The Algonquin Reader presents the books it's putting forward. The essay by the author, followed by an excerpt from their book, is brilliant. Often the essay gives me enough of a glimpse into the author and their writing style that I'm hooked without having to read the excerpt. The connection to their work, knowing the source of their story, is more than enough.

Though I'm late to read this installment, there are several books in it that I'm newly excited about reading.

After downloading the latest one of these I decided to go back and download the past issues in order to hopefully discover some possible additions to my TBR list. Great excerpts, books added to my TBR!
