"The Updated eBook-only Version of Edgar Award Winning Author Burl Barer's Shocking New York Times Bestseller!"

" ... where for the first time an FBI profiler was allowed to testify and the controversial pre-DNA science of allotyping was presented to a jury."

On March 15th, 1987 police in Anchorage, Alaska arrived at a horrific scene of carnage. In a modest downtown apartment, they found Nancy Newman's brutally beaten corpse sprawled across her bed. In other rooms were the bodies of her eight-year-old daughter, Melissa, and her three-year-old, Angie, whose throat was slit from ear to ear. Both Nancy and Melissa had been sexually assaulted.

After an intense investigation, the police narrowed the principle suspect down to 23-year-old Kirby Anthoney a troubled drifter who had turned to his uncle, Nancy's husband John, for help and a place to stay. Little did John know that the nephew he took in was a murderous sociopath capable of slaughtering his beloved family.

This true story, shocking and tragic, stunned Anchorage's residents and motivated the Major Crimes Unit of the Anchorage Police Department to do everything right in their investigation. Feeling the heat as the police built their case, Kirby bolted for the Canadian border. But the cops were on to him. First they hunted him down; then the cops and a tenacious prosecutor began their long, bitter battle to convict him up against an equally tough defense lawyer, as well as the egomaniacal defendant himself. This shocking tale reached its climax in a controversial trial where for the first time an FBI profiler was allowed to testify and the controversial, pre-DNA science of allotyping was presented to a jury. But justice would not be served until after the psychopathic Kirby Anthoney took the stand in his own defense - and showed the world the monster he truly was.

MURDER IN THE FAMILY became an instant New York Times Bestseller when it was first released in 2000. Barer has updated the eBook version of this classic true crime tale of horror.

A Note From the Publisher

Burl Barer is an Edgar Award winning author and two-time Anthony Award nominee with extensive media, advertising, marketing, and public relations experience.
Barer wrote, produced, and often voiced, national radio and television spots for such performing artists as Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Eric Clapton, Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac, Liza Minelli, Temptations, Four Tops, and many more. Barer also created and produced national radio and/or television campaigns for Warner/Electra/Atlantic, Media One, Management III, and Seattle Pacific Industries. Other national/regional clients have included Penzoil, Safeway, Superlube, Black Angus Restaurants, the Aladdin Theater for the Performing Arts, and the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas.

While Barer contributed his media savvy to numerous publications and projects over the years, it was his internationally acclaimed 442 page critical/biographical study of Leslie Charteris' enduringly different Robin Hood of Modern Crime, Simon Templar, which earned him the highest honor from the Mystery Writers of America -- The 1994 Edgar Allen Poe Award. The Saint: A Complete History in Print, Radio, Television, and Film not only received the Edgar, but also an Anthony Award nomination from the World Mystery Convention.

Contracted by the estate of Leslie Charteris to pen a minimum of three new novels in the popular Saint series, Barer completed Capture the Saint, the first original Saint novel in thirteen years. Film rights to the previous 52 Saint books were acquired by producer Robert Evans. Paramount Pictures released the Saint, starring Val Kilmer, in 1997. Barer's novelization of the film's screenplay, THE SAINT, published by Simon and Schuster Pocketbooks, has sold over 100,000 copies in English, and has been translated into French, Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, and German.

At the request of Warner Brothers, Barer accompanied Mel Gibson, James Garner, and Jodie Foster on the set of the hit film Maverick, writing the colorful companion book to that rollicking, uproarious western. Man Overboard: The Counterfeit Resurrection of Phil Champagne (1995), a wry and humorous genre-bending true crime adventure earned a nomination for the coveted Anthony Award by the World Mystery Convention as Best True Crime Book of the Year.

Advance Praise

“A while ago I read this book after living through this horrific tragedy first hand. In my intitial rating of this book I did not give it a very good rating. I would like to revise it at this time. After giving more thought to this, I realize that the author was just telling the story and not making judgement or light of the incident. Therefore, I would like to let him know it was very well written and thank him for keeping my family members ‘real people.'”–Shayleen Eastman, Five-Star Review

“This book is exceptionally well written, the level of research the author Burl Barer did to give the account of this horrific crime is exceptional. Recommend if you are a true crime reader.”–Marlene Fabregas, Five-Star Review

This was an extremely hard book to read. The brutal murder of a mother and her 2 children. And the cruel, insensitive person who did this. A monster. But, the tenacity of the law enforcement, the judicial system and the FBI profiler would not give up. What a testament to their determination for these 3 victims. I went through a variety of emotions, but I could not put this book down. The writing was superb, the language easy to understand and the book just grabbed you. I wanted to stop reading due to the nature of the book and the horrific murders, but I just could not. The care that the author put into recounting this horrific crime and its aftermath is stunning. I highly recommend this book for any true crime fan. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.

Great book. Very well written book, yet hard to read in places. It is about a triple homicide in Alaska and the investigation that followed. It was done by a family member, Kirby Anthoney. This was a case where FBI profiling helped to catch Anthoney. It was very interesting to read how everything was analyzed. Again, great book.

This books takes you into the inner workings of the mind of a murder. Who kills a mother and her small children then sexually assaults them? A psychopath. One who thinks they can get away with anything using charm and smiles.
A storyline that keeps you captivated to the very end. Filled with details. Interesting and we'll written.

If you are a fan of true crime books, you can't beat this one, but you will need some personal strength to get you through it. The murders at the heart of this story are the most vile imaginable, and although the author did his utmost to report the crimes and the trial as they were recorded and didn't insert himself into the story, it is a difficult read.

The book itself is very well written, but the emotional toll of reading it makes it hard to put down, hard to understand how someone could do something like this, and very hard to forget once you have read it.

I was impressed with the way the author wrote this book. Obviously. Burl Barer is well known for his true crime books, but this one, more than any other touched me on a deeper level than most. Hi dedicated research into the facts of this case were a good basis for the book, but it was his reporting on the emotions of the surviving family members that really got to me. This case was built on a tragedy, and he did an excellent job of recreating the events for those who did not catch the trial the first time around.

This is the kind of book that haunts you after you finish it, and I highly recommend it to anyone studying criminal justice, or anyone who wants and authentic true crime book.

This review is based on a complementary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Murder in The Family is a haunting true crime. Burl Barer did a great job telling this story. Kirby Anthony definitely "slipped" through the system. I feel I gained complete knowledge of this horrific crime. The book flows nicely and is written so anyone can understand the crime.
