Sir Barnaby Ware made a massive mistake two and a half years ago. When he slept with his best friend’s Marcus Langford Earl of Cosgrove wife Lavinia. Barnaby has been invited to Marcus’ home but is dreading it & almost turns back until that is a young woman appears & asks for a lift.
Marcus wants to start over but Barnaby can’t forgive himself as he knows himself to be irredeemable, but the captivating and unconventional Miss Merryweather is determined to prove him wrong.

He spends time with Merry & they both feel a strong attraction. Merry is shortly to have her 25th birthday when she’ll be granted a wish by her Baletongue godmother, she has still to decide on what to wish for.
Two young boys find some caves, there are rock falls & some are trapped, will they be rescued. I’ve really enjoyed the previous books in the series & whilst this book could stand alone it does continue Marcus’ & Charlotte’s story. It is a short but enjoyable read & I recommend it & look forward to the rest of the series

As a general rule, I do not enjoy novellas, but as another general rule, I adore Emily Larkin aka Emily May, who is a writer of immense talent. I find novellas quite superficial and it's hard for me to really feel the characters and the story. Oh, and I'm not really into magical story lines, because I feel, I have outgrown them at my grand age. Ms Larkin defied my prejudices by giving us a moving story, with characters brimming with life and emotions, so much so that I was able to enjoy even the fantastical elements of the story. She

I would label this book under "easy summer read". Story was simple and short. Would have given it 4 stars if the author had included more intrigue, i.e. less simplicity so that the reader would not be able to guess what was coming to the protagonists.

April 1807 and Sir Barnaby Ware is near Woodhuish Abbey, to face a man he has betrayed. Just before he turns to go back he meet Miss Anne Merryweather - a female who says and sees what others don't - he continues on to meet Marcus, Lord Cosgrove. Can Barnaby be redeemed and can he ever forgive himself.
A delightful novella, possibly my first story with a hint of magic, with likeable characters which I wanted to read more about.

I really like the Baleful Godmother book series! The second book in the series takes up the story of Sir Barnaby Ware, when he is invited by Marcus the Earl of Cosgrove to come for a visit to see if they can repair their severely damaged friendship. Upon his arrival, he meets Miss Merryweather, which further complicates the situation. This story deals with romance/love (of course), forgiveness, and what goes into moving on with one's life. After reading the first book, the question I was left wondering about the most was what would happen with the relationship between Marcus and Barnaby, and this book answered that question. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.

I received a copy of this novella from the publisher via NetGalley.

Sir Barnaby Ware travels to visit his friend Marcus Cosgrove. He is nervous because he betrayed Marcus by sleeping with his first wife and Marcus rebuffed him when he asked for forgiveness on a previous occasion. Now Marcus has made the first overture towards him in a bid to restore their friendship. Miss Merryweather, a distant relative of the second Lady Cosgrove, is staying with them and is intrigued by Barnaby.

Miss Merryweather is about to turn 25 and on her birthday will be able to choose from a list of supernatural gifts. It become apparent that readers of the first novella in this series are aware that Lady Cosgrove had the same opportunity and chose the ability to change into the form of other animals (or the form of a man).

I quite enjoyed this story on the whole, although it required a lot of suspension of disbelief. The characters were universally likeable and the cave scenes were unusual and interesting. I struggled a bit with the portrayal of the first Lady Cosgrove, who wasn't there to defend herself and who seemed to be taking more than her fair share of the blame for her and Barnaby's adultery. In fact, Marcus seemed ready to view Barnaby as pretty much entirely blameless.

I would recommend reading these novellas in order.

Doing something wrong by betraying a friend can make guilt eat you up- how can you let that go? Can you lose so much and still find hope? This is a Godmother who could turn your wishes to harm than help so be careful for what you ask for. I like that some of this story is magic and some of it is based on facts.

Absolutely loved this book! Couldn't put it down. Two lifelong friends, one is an Earl, the other a Baron. The Earl was married to a very promiscuous, manipulative wife. She went crying off to Bree, saying Marcus had beat her, they had a one night stand. He cannot forgive himself. However, Marcus has remarried a sweet, intelligent lady, with an unusual gift. Merry is staying with her friends The Earl, and Countess, the two women are distantly related. During his time visiting Marcus, Merry brings out the best in Bree. However, will he be able to forgive himself, before it's too late? I highly recommend! Thanks! Enjoy! carolintallahassee

Entertaining and unique novella. Larkin has created something quite different in Miss Merryweather, who I suspect Regency fans will object to. That said, let go and read it- it makes for a good diversion on a rainy day. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

I received an ARC from the publisher in return for an honest review. Miss Merryweather like Charlotte before her has a Baleful Godmother. Unlike Charlotte, she knows what will happen on the 25th birthday. That is when the Baleful Godmother will appear and offer her one gift but she has to be very careful what she asks for. Some things you can ask for will do more harm than good. While she is waiting she meets Sir Barnaby Ware. He was in the first book, Unmasking Miss Appleby, as were Charlotte and Lord Cosgrove. This is about forgiveness and going on with life. Just as Merry thinks that she will get her HEA something happens to Barnaby and she must ask for just the right thing to save the day. This is one where you really need to read book one to understand all of the current running though the story. This has fast become one of my favorite series and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. There is a sample of that book at the end of Resisting Miss Merryweather.

Resisting Miss Merryweather was a fun introduction to the new(to me) Baleful Godmother Series by Emily Larkin.

I love smart, sensible heroines and Merry certainly is one. I also love the touch of magic that hovers over this book, not overtly taking over the plot, but always in the air.

Second volume of the Baleful Godmother series where the heroines receive the visit of a fairy on their 25th birthday, Resisting Miss Merryweather features the cousin of the first heroine and the first hero’s best friend (review here https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31286570-unmasking-miss-appleby ).

We’ve seen in the previous volume that Barnaby and Marcus were like brothers until the first slept with the second’s first wife. One year after the big argument we witnessed, Marcus has had time to think about what his first wife subjected him to and the lies she told, and he decided to invite his friend to his son’s christening hoping to mend their friendship. Barnaby arrives totally anxious, he doesn’t forgive himself for betraying his friend, and he thinks Marcus won’t forgive him too. I really loved seeing the relation between the two men evolves little by little in a new understanding and a new friendship.

The heroine is nicknamed Merry, shortcut of her surname, and this nickname sticks to her solar personality. She hasn’t had the fairy’s visit yet, but her mother informed her about it and she wonders regularly on which power she should choose. She also has some gift to read people, and she realize from the start that Barnaby is a nice man who blames himself for what happened.

She falls in love a little too fast, deciding he’s the love of her life. He resists more to his attraction, by repeating himself (a bit too much) that he’s not worthy to be happy with her. A cave is discovered and an accident happens, forcing Merry and her cousin to reveal to Barnaby the existence of the fairy and her gifts, and bringing the couple closer.

The ending is quite captivating, but the whole of the book unfortunately suffers from the shortness of the story, only a hundred pages or so, and everything is a bit fast and not deep enough. However it’s a cute story that can be read as a stand-alone, even if it’s better to have read the first volume to better understand the past between the hero and his friend.

A historical romance with elements of the paranormal. A not so pleasant faery godmother bestows gifts that may or may not be helpful to the female descendants. Miss Merryweather finds the love of her life before her twenty fifth birthday, while she mulls over the choices she will have. Her cousin found her and warned her in advance....a warning Charlotte did not have.
A cave in changes everything. Becoming trapped after finding the missing boys, brings Barnaby and Merry close. She draws all his secrets from him and he finds peace with her and accepts what she tells him, as fantastical as it is.....but there is much more to overcome.
Read how her determination saves him and they find their happy-ever-after.
Uplifting and sweet.

Sir Barnaby Ware made a mistake two and a half years ago letting himself be seduced by his best friend’s wife. Now Barnaby has come to try to make amends with his old friend even though he feels that he may not deserve the forgiveness he’s come to seek.

When Barnaby arrives he meets Miss Merryweather, the daughter of a dancing master and a noblewoman. The two are immediately drawn to one another but Barnaby doesn’t believe he will ever be good enough for a nice young woman like Merry but when an accident happens the pair find themselves growing close.

Resisting Miss Merryweather is the second book in the Baleful Godmother series by Emily Larkin. Along with the first book in this series there is also a set of prequel novellas, The Fey Quartet series that also tie into this story. The entire series is a mix of historical, fantasy and romance. The main female characters in the Baleful Godmother series have received a gift upon each of their twenty fifth birthdays from a faerie who’s story was told in the Fey Quartet novellas.

I’ve really enjoyed this series with it’s interesting mix of genres. The one thing I found with Resisting Miss Merryweather was I found that I would have liked a bit more to remind me of what had happened earlier in the story since it had been a bit of time since I’d read the first book. Once I found myself caught up though it still found myself enjoying learning about Merry and her gift that she chose and her relationship developing with Barnaby in this edition of the series.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Resisting Miss Merryweather?
Who could resist her?

Merry is the one you want to have around when you feel low, the one you want to have around when you are upset and when you lost hope.
And Merry is the one who is around when Sir Barnaby needs someone who helps him to forgive himself when he comes to the christening of the son of his childhood friend Marcus who some readers might remember from the wonderful "Unmasking Miss Appleby". Those who remember will also remember that Barnaby made indeed a big mistake. Big - yes. Unforgivable - maybe. It all depends on his ability to forgive himself.
With someone like Merry around, well, it might be possible at last!
Oh, and guess what - Merry and Marcus' wife Charlotte have also something in common: A very frightening and irritating godmother.

Remember?
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that Faerie godmothers do not exist."
Don't they?
Well, we are about to find out about that - again and let's just say that right then time is of the essence and, well, this godmother can't come too soon to grant her goddaughter her wish!

Once more Emily Larkin has done it: "Resisting Miss Merryweather" is another wonderful book in the "Baleful Godmother"-Series! I loved Miss Appleby and her story, I loved Miss Trentham and Miss Merryweather is irresistible as well. Just the right amount of magic to spice it up, a wonderful story with amazing, complex characters and a heroine and a hero that are just loveable and who simply belong together.
