Description

“FABULOUS.” —B.A. Paris, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown

THE PERFECT MARRIAGE IS THE PERFECT ILLUSION.

Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he’s promised today will be the best day ever.

But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?

Forcing us to ask ourselves just how well we know those who are closest to us, Best Day Ever crackles with dark energy, spinning ever tighter toward its shocking conclusion. In the vein of The Couple Next Door, Kaira Rouda weaves a gripping, tautly suspenseful tale of deception and betrayal dark enough to destroy a marriage…or a life.

WOW! Is this a new author? No she's not but what a drastic change from her pervious works. This book was fantastic! Wicked smart, with a sassy, self absorbed narrator! I was cheering for Mia by the end of the book! This is a MUST read!

On the surface Paul Strom and his wife Mia seem like the perfect couple. Paul, he’s such a romantic – he arranges for their sons to be watched over by a babysitter so he and Mia can have the “best day ever” at their lakeside vacation home. Taking place over the span of one day, and narrated by Paul, this is a creepy look inside the mind of a psychopath. it doesn’t take readers long to discover something about Paul isn’t right, and that the best day he has planned is anything but. My heart rate shot way up while I was reading this – not great for right before bedtime!

I really liked this book. The characters were well developed. I found the husband entirely creepy, almost from the first moment. I loved the twist at the end.

How unnerving to read the story from the perspective of the narcissistic husband! Throughout the story I found myself shaking my head at the audacity of such a personality and on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next! Excellent suspenseful read! I received an advance copy from Great Thoughts Ninjas. All opinions are my own.

This book gripped me from page one. I literally read it in two days--I couldn't put it down. Best Day Ever is a psychological thriller involving the narrator and protagonist, Paul Strom, and his wife Mia. The author does a great job of telling the story from Paul's POV, and the reader has a sense of foreboding from the first page. Soon, it becomes apparent that Paul isn't the honest, reliable narrator we initially believed him to be. Great fun to read--I highly recommend it.

Paul and Mia are travelling to their country home; Paul, the narrator promises repeatedly that it will be "the best day ever" but as they approach their destination cracks begin to show--Paul is having an affair, Mia is suffering from a mysterious illness, and their financial situation is precarious at best. Paul definitely seems to be planning something but it has ominous overtones.

I was expecting a standard "criminal narrates his evil plans" book but I was pleasantly surprised when the tables turned and the novel went to some new and exciting places.

If Amy Dunne/Gone Girl every had a brother or cousin, it would be Paul Strom. The book is told from his unreliable perspective in the span of 24 hours. Each chapter covers anywhere from fifteen to 45 minutes. One would think that not much could happen in that time that could fill an entire book. But when it starts with the premise of a romantic weekend and ends in attempted murder, there is plenty of action! We see everything through Paul's eyes at first, it is almost voyeuristic, and then we slowley start to put pieces together about the past that are leading to this vacation getaway for Paul and his wife.

This is one of the most suspenseful psychological thrillers that I've read in awhile. So many books have promised to be the next "Gone Girl/Girl On the Train" and have not lived up to those claims. I think "Best Day Ever" comes pretty close to it.
