Who Feels Surprised, Dear Dragon?

The Dear Dragon series is made up of several books that are easy readers. They use site vocabulary that is printed in the back of the book. This book is written with 74 words that are printed in the back. It reminds me of the books I learned to read with.

In this book, it is raining and Dear Dragon and his boy are sad because they can not go outside. Father suggests things they can do inside such as play with Spot, read books to spend time with friends and finally baking cookies. They are surprised that they have so much fun inside. When it stops raining they happily go outside and share the cookies they made with their friends. All this is told in simple, repetitive, easy vocabulary. These Beginning-to-Read books capture the imaginations of beginning readers and help them on their way to independent reading. They could also be read aloud to young children who are not able to read yet. The back of the book has several suggested activities that can be used for reading reinforcement. A great addition to a family library or a primary classroom.

I love the Dear Dragon books. Ok I am a kid at heart. But more ten that I am a Grand Parent of small Children as well. I feel that reading is a huge part of a child's development. When the Grand Kids are here which is often we always read books. They love it when Nana has new ones for them.

This book is about Dear Dragon and the boy, wished they would give him a name. It is a rainy day and they cannot go out and play. They tell Daddy they are sad. Daddy comes up with wonderful ideas to keep them busy from reading books to baking cookies. Dear Dragon and the boy are surprised at just how much fun they have had during the sad rainy day.

This is another great beginning to read book from Margaret Hillert. Dear Dragon is popular and the kids really like him. My only complaint is really minor. When the boy and the dragon go to make cookies, I wish the father had had them make them from scratch rather than handing them packaged dough. Obviously, it's more of a pet peeve of mine rather than anything that interferes with the quality of the book.
