Description

T.K. Boomer’s new book, Planet Song, Book One of the Fahr Trilogy, embraces the best of traditional science fiction - thematic complexity and evolved characters, introduces readers to an aquatic sapient species, and takes place over the course of 1000 years. It’s epic science fiction told from the alien point of view.

The Fahr are the oldest and most powerful sapient species in the galaxy and the only one to have mastered interstellar travel. They are addicted to song and send corporate entities to travel the galaxy searching for pets that can sing.

During the black plague in the 14th century, Song Corp, the largest of these companies, lands on Earth. They discover humpback whales, singers of the most powerful and additive songs they have ever encountered. Song Corp is determined to bring home a breeding population of these whales but their ship is too small. They return to their home planet to get a larger ship, a round trip that will take 650 years. They assume that the planet’s resident sapient species, a plague-ravished humanity, won’t offer much resistance.

Planet Song is told from the perspective of Teracia, a rare female Fahr. She is deeply concerned about the welfare of humanity and fears Song Corp will destroy them to collect the whales. When Song Corp returns to the Earth at the beginning of the 21st-century, they find a much more advanced and dangerous humanity.  The Fahr now have too much invested to turn back. Against all odds, Teracia must try to protect humanity from a war they can’t win.

At its heart, Planet Song is about corporate misbehavior but this corporation is owned by aliens, not humans. Some of the questions Boomer can address include:

- How does the globalization and influence of business interests throughout the world impact world governments?

- Can a single person change the behavior of a large corporation?

- Is the human race prepared for contact with another sapient species?

- Has human technological advance happened too quickly?

Very impressive SF debut novel by T.K. Boomer about first contact for humans with an alien race. The Fahr, are an extremely long lived race whose civilization has evolved to support an addiction. An addiction to music, the purest form of which they have found on earth with whale song. This is a fascinating study in contrasts between the long-lived Fahr and the limited vision of a short life span race like man. Though their perspectives on things are vastly different, they both share the affliction of racial blind spots. Fascinating. And I look forward to seeing how the two races will interact with one another in the sequels.

I agree with many of the other reviews – this is a good story, well-told by T.K. Boomer. He creates a compelling alien race that is paradoxically very different from humans, but at the same time remarkably similar. Unlike other novels in this genre, the alien characters are believable and compelling – I was surprised when I found myself empathizing. I especially appreciated how Boomer is creating not only an alien race, but also a religious framework for them, with multiple interpretations. I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops in the second book of the trilogy – Alpha Tribe. It's getting 4 stars because I don't give 5 to any book or any author!

This is probably one of the best science fiction books I have ever read (I have read a lot). Great story about first contact, political satire, and really good creation of an alien culture and way of thought. I can't wait for the sequel. If you like Larry Niven and David Brin then this book is for you.
I have just read the book for the second time. I am anxiously waiting for the sequel. I want to know what happens when the Fahr return to Earth. T.K. Boomer has shown a lot of imagination so far. Can't wait the the next book in the series.
