Description

For seventeen-year-old Miho, the long war with her own mind is becoming too much to bear. Between the unending nightmares, PTSD, depression, and isolation, the mental skirmishes never end. Those sweet whispers of the dark wisps promise freedom from the pain, and it’s getting harder to say no.

When she witnesses a tragic accident, she catches the interest of her classmates Taka and Shinji, two boys with reputations for being casual playboys. But they let Miho see what no one else bothers to notice, like the regular abuse Shinji hides behind a sweet smile and easy-going laugh and Taka’s barely leashed rage and frustration over his inability to protect his best friend or even control his own destiny.

What starts as a hesitant friendship becomes a deep connection the three can’t ignore, but do they dare dream of happiness when the world around them seems bent on destroying them?

Deviations is an upper YA romance that includes a positive exploration of alternative relationships and a realistic portrayal of abuse and teens battling mental health issues. Contains strong language and sexual content.

Hakodate Hearts is a genre-crossing series of interconnected stories about people on the edge of giving up who find hope and renewal in unexpected meetings, friendships, and love. Set in a shared world centered around Hakodate, Japan, each book is a standalone work and the series can be read in any order.

"Anma Natsu's writing is both poetic and relatable, and she is able to articulate some extremely serious issues and tragic situations quite eloquently… Not something I normally pick up, but was definitely an eye opener and would recommend if you would like to read something from a different cultural perspective that deals with mental issues, domestic issues, and sexuality." – Ari, Pages of Worlds

"I am usually not a fan of YA books but Ms. Natsu nailed this with her words, vivid descriptions and impeccable writing style. Once I got into this story it was so hard for me to put it to down. This story was emotionally charged, painfully and powerfully and yet it had so much promise. The promise of happiness despite a world filled with darkness…Take a chance on Deviations you will not be disappointed." – Josie, Lustful Literature

This is a read probably more appropriate for older teens. However it covers some very sensitive issues that can happen in anyone's life. The author writes sensitivity about PTSD and depression is written in a way that helps people teixe that the issues are out there anyone can have them, but it can be taken cate of appropriately.
This is second in a series but each book is written in a way that they can be read in any order. Each book is a story in it's own right and is considered a stand alone read. Excellent. 5 Stars
