Description

An autobiography by Paul Hattaway, a high school dropout from New Zealand whose love for God and commitment to the peoples of Asia has led him to provide 10 million Bibles to China alone, and to sponsor more than 1500 Asian missionaries through the ministry Asia Harvest. Paul is a gifted speaker, but in obedience to God he has focused for many years on his writing, notably telling the story of Chinese Christian Brother Yun in his book The Heavenly Man, which has sold over one million copies and been translated into nearly 50 languages.

“It has been my privilege to have known Paul Hattaway for nearly twenty years. I have not met anyone else with his knowledge and understanding of the Church and people of Asia. He has experienced missionary life first hand, his research is legendary, and he appreciates the challenges of going to the unreached. Paul has been an invaluable friend, partner, and advisor to AsiaLink since our inception. If you meet Paul, you will know that overriding all of this is his God-given desire to see Asia’s billions saved from eternal death.” Colin Dudgeon, AsiaLink, United

What can God do with a high school drop out?
Anything He desires. He can use him to bless thousands of fellow believers, reach countless perishing souls, and alert the church to the desperate needs in Asia.
This is a Christian autobiography; more than that, it’s a chronicle of Christ’s work in and through a willing servant. Christ really is the center of this book. Hattaway is very careful to give God the glory for any successes or blessings he and his ministry have seen. By the end of the book, you will want the same quality walk with the Savior he has. Will you trade security, wealth, health, love, and reputation for it? Are you willing, as he was, to obey God’s direction at every step? When you fail, will you repent? Will you worry more about Christ’s reputation than your own? Will you give yourself to God?
I was so convicted and encouraged by this book. It’s Hattaway’s story, but more it’s his testimony of redemption and sanctification. He tells it in a very straightforward manner, only interrupting to illustrate with a scripture verse or two. That was done in a slightly different manner than I’ve seen before. It was done so well that it didn’t interrupt the train of thought. Oh, there were also a few paragraphs inserted here and there by other people. They helped give both sides of the story very clearly.
No doubt, this book will generate controversy. It deals with some of the nastiest things that happen in the Church. He does it with grace and delicacy, but it’s a hard read. How could it not be? (I’m trying not to spoil the book, so there will be no specifics.) The original sin that affected them stretched into years of slander, attacks, threats, and intimidation. Hattaway describes what going through a situation like that and the resulting rumors and loneliness is like. While he speaks of what others did to him and his family, he still focuses on God’s grace, strength, comfort, forgiveness, and teachings more.
There are many miracles mentioned, but again they aren’t the focus. Christ and His purposes are. I didn’t feel that it was sensationalized. Therefore, I recommend it to you wholeheartedly. I believe, if you are saved, it will encourage you to walk with the Lord; and if you are lost, by the end, you will know that Christ paid the penalty for your sins by dying on the Cross, and rose again to offer you eternal life. What will you do with Jesus which is called Christ?
I received this as a free ARC from NetGalley and Lion Hudson IP Limited Monarch Books. No review was required, but it was my pleasure to write it. Please let me recommend it to you. It is a great blessing.

Challenging.

The story of a man who has been prepared to count the cost of following Christ and has proved it to be worth it. Paul Hattaway readily and clearly gives all the glory to God and acknowledges that he could have done nothing himself - but what a wonderful story of what God has done through him.

At times my theology differed significantly from Mr Hattaway's, but his humility and clear commitment to the authority of Scripture made this a challenge to me rather than a cause to censure him. Definitely thought provoking and faith stirring. Challenges the reader to self-examination and Christ-dependence.

An Asian Harvest by Paul Hattaway is an incredible book about surrender to God and walking in the will of God. We read it out loud as a family to each other and we were all blessed! God doesn’t call the equipped but He equips those He calls. This is a great example of that truth. I felt that the author was authentic and vulnerable to share with his readers some tough things. This book blessed me, challenged me, kept me reading, and I found myself right along with him in his heartbrokenness for the adversity that he has faced but it’s not surprising to anyone who is in His Word.
