Flying With a Broken Wing

A middle-grade novel that 13 year=old me would have absolutely loved. Cammie is a spunky, visually-impaired main character whose sight impairment does not define her, but rather is just one aspect of her experience of life. I'd be interested to know what research Laura Best did for this novel - it seemed very good.

This book is an absolute contender for future classic status, up there with the likes of Polyanna, Huckleberry Finn & Tom Sawyer. It has the same sort of beautiful, heart-wrenching, classic, timeless feel to it. Just an absolutely gorgeous story.

Cammie, born with sight challenges and living with her moonshine selling Aunt Millie, is such a lovely character who I was rooting for right from the beginning. She may have had it tough, but boy is she tougher! And when circumstance throw her together with Evelyn Merry, son of the local violent drunk, you feel like life really begins for the pair of them. Their friendship is one of the most beautiful and heartfelt ever written.

This book is utterly bitter sweet, and had me smiling along with Cammie's eternal optimism and empathy, as well as having tears rolling down my face at how unfair life really can be at times.

This is a must read for men, women & children of all ages.
