Description

Eddie Mackey was busy defending his country when his wife supposedly committed suicide. A year later, he has a new mission: finding her murderer. The perfect starting point is the New York City photojournalist who filmed his wife’s last words.

Except Miranda Hill won’t betray the secrets of the dead, especially when she has to protect the living. Not to mention, a terrifying accident left her with PTSD and enough danger to last a lifetime. The last thing she needs is a determined marine jeopardizing her hard-won stability.

When Eddie’s investigation nearly costs Miranda her life, he adds protecting the gorgeous woman to the wrongs he must right. Sparks fly, even as it becomes clear they are embroiled in something far more sinister than they’d imagined. But higher stakes soon erode the tenuous trust Eddie and Miranda have built. With a killer determined to bury them, the only way to win is to dig deep—both inside and out—to uncover the truth and expose evil.

“JB Schroeder always delivers with characters real enough to know them, stories with enough texture to believe, and suspense enough to raise the hair on your arms.

A big Thank you to NetGalley and JB Schroeder and Two Feet Press for the ARC for my honest review.

First time reading this author. I gave 4 stars. This book kept me guessing. I knew it was #2 in a series going in. But this reads as a stand alone book. I believe that this book would be enjoyed by any mystery reader and some romance readers. He is looking for answers about the murder of his wife, and definitely finds more than he could ever have imagined. A fast paced book with a lot of twists and unexpected things happening. Well worth the read in my opinion. Let me know if you agree. Enjoy

This book was suspense on top of high charged sexual tension. Both lead to a delicious story of trying to right wrongs and find the killer without ending up dead.

I didn't read the first as this is my first time reading this author, but seeing it's about Aiden, I will likely find out his story, too.

A man in ruthless pursuit of the truth about the death of his wife ends up embroiled in a game of twist and turns in the hunt that reveals shocking truths.

9/11 is also at the heart of the story which was the turning point in the lives of the hero and his wife. Eddie Mackey went on to serve his country after and his wife who was a paramedic who was at ground zero saving lives ended up quitting and joining the mayors office as part of the hero campaigns. This is where they grew apart from all the time Eddie was overseas. When he returns for her funeral he cannot accept that her death was a suicide. Over a year later a letter convinces him that he was right and he sets out to prove it and to find out what was really going on all those years he was away.

This was a fast paced suspense with lots of red herrings and second chance for Eddie to make up for some of his failings as a husband and even find a second chance at love.

JB Schroeder wrote a fantastic, emotional sequel. The storyline was very emotional and fraught with tension and suspense, after reading and getting to the part about Eddie questioning his wife's suicide it just took off from there. Amazing. Meeting Miranda and learning her secrets may destroy him or help him learn to live again. The trail to love and forgiveness if filled with twists and turns that can shock even the most avid of readers. Discovering the truth about his wife's death will lead Eddie to places that he never thought he would have to go, bit it was needed. I look forward to reading the next installment of this series.

Thank you NetGalley and JB Schroder for allowing me to read and review this book.

Did his wife commit suicide ... or was she murdered? That's the question that Eddie Mackey is asking himself. He was in the service overseas when he got word that his wife was dead.

A year later, he has retired from the service and is determined to find justice for his late wife. The first person he wants to talk to is Miranda Hill. Miranda is a photojournalist who films clients' last words.

But Miranda doesn't want to talk to Eddie. His wife made a second tape with her and revealed a secret that Eddie knows nothing about.

Eddie's investigation leads to someone attempting to kille Miranda. Eddie, being the man he is, becomes her bodyguard and those sparks start flying like mad.

What Eddie finds is that the danger is not only pointed to Miranda, other bodies start falling. All Eddie wants is the truth ... even if it costs him everything he holds dear.

This is a riveting romantic suspense. The story line is precise, with more suspense than romance. The sexual tension between Eddie and Miranda is a bit graphic, but well done. Miranda suffers from severe PTSD which adds another layer of interest to this story. And Miranda's friends are priceless.

This was a new author to me and now I look forward to reading Book 2 in this series. Each of the books are stand alones with no spoilers.

Many thanks to the author / JB Schroeder LLC and Two Feet Press / Netgalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (digital). Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Absolutely Awesome!

In my opinion this is her best book yet.

Beyond fast paced, characters that literally leap off the pages and romance that SIZZLES.

I liked book 1...book 2 literally crackles with heat and the story kept me turning the pages. I had to put it away due to health issues with family. When I could, I devoured the rest.

Eddie Mackey...retired military cannot accept his wife's suicide due to cancer while deployed. Finally emerging from his fog of grief he begins to push buttons. That is when he stumbles upon Miranda Hill and her work taking videos to leave behind for loved ones. Eddie has seen one but not the second video his wife left.

Deceit, lies and crazy plot twists emerge to send Eddie and Miranda on a crazy journey. I loved this book, absolutely LOVED. This book is romantic suspense at its best. MUST READ!

Uncovered snuck up on me. I was reading and enjoying it but there came a time when I couldn’t put it down. It tells the story of a man in the military, Eddie, who joined after 9/11 and comes home to his wife’s funeral. She apparently committed suicide. But things don’t add up and he decides he needs to figure out why. And that is where we meet Miranda, who has a successful business recoding people’s last words to their loved ones. Eddie thinks she knows something. Miranda thinks she knows something. Things aren’t as they appear. Cue suspenseful music…

What is it about a nurturing man that cooks? Oh, he is an alpha, no worries there! That man is gonna get me every time. I don’t care that Eddie is on the hunt for his dead wife’s killer, at one point in the story, he is barefoot and cooking in her kitchen. I don’t care that he thinks that maybe Miranda knew something, did something. I’m her and he is taking care of me. So yes, if you’re into romantic suspense/mystery, Eddie is someone you’re going to want to meet.

Let’s talk suspense…this book is marketed as mystery/thriller. I found the thriller part to be a bit of a stretch. Romantic suspense, maybe… I guess those genres could straddle the line of each other? There was one scene that comes to mind that was super suspenseful and at that moment I could not put this book down, but the rest of the story is what I call, romantic suspense light. If you’re someone that likes to predict in books, as am I, I also think that you will have this one nailed. It was pretty predictable. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t an entertaining or engaging story. I still really enjoyed it and I like knowing that I was right. Isn’t that part of the fun of a mystery? Plus, it makes me feel smart.

A year and a half after his wife’s death, Eddie decides that he cannot let it go nor believe that she killed herself, especially after learning she was cancer free.
He goes back to New-York and starts asking questions, starting with the beautiful Miranda Hill to whom his wife confided to, in order to make a goodbye video, in the weeks before her death.

I really enjoyed this romantic mystery & thriller.
The chemistry between the two main characters was perfect and I really like the thriller part too, though it was a bit predictable at times.
I liked the characters too. they were layered and loveable.
I read this very quickly too, I couldn’t put it down.
I’d definitely would recommend this book for anyone who likes suspense and/or romance.

I have read all 3 of this author's books and they just keep getting better! The plot and back stories are believable and interesting. The characters are multidimensional and not without flaws which I think is so relatable.
I really enjoyed all the twists and turns this title had to offer and am looking forward to the rest in this series!!!

4.5 This is book 2 in the Unlikely Series, I have not read book 1, but I was not lost and could immediately dive in.

Great mystery with thrills every time you turn around. I did figure out who was ultimately responsible, but there were several bombshells dropped through out that you do not want to miss.

This book had a about everything on my wish list, plot, romance, mystery, thriller, military men it just covered all the bases. :)

Eddie Mackey returns home from the service when his wife dies. He is told she had cancer that she hadn’t told him about and she committed suicide. After moving out of the city, stewing about it for a year and a half, not believing she committed suicide, he begins investigating her life and death. He had been gone for several years serving his country, not able to come home very often and they had grown apart. He knew little about her friends or her job. She had made a goodbye DVD for him, so he decided to start with the videographer.

Miranda Hill isn’t about to give up any secrets from her clients, even if they are dead. When Eddie Mackey shows up, she slams the door in his face once she makes the connection. Miranda has PTSD from an event in her past and is struggling to make it through each day. She isn’t about to let Eddie upset her carefully constructed world.

Eddie is persistent. When his probing stirs things up, and Miranda is attacked, he kicks into protective mode. As they continue to spend time together, these two circle each other, start to hit it, get interrupted, back away, circle each other, you get the idea.

Eddie has issues from facts he discovered after his wife’s death that occurred during his marriage. Understandably so. He has used those issues to build a wall around himself. He is very hesitant to start anything with Miranda. Miranda’s PTSD doesn’t give her much breathing room. She needs her routine. Eddie challenges her.

I loved Max, Aggie and Cora.

This is more of a romantic light suspense than mystery and thriller. I had it figured out very early on. No gripping the edge of your seat suspense.

This is my first book by this author but the second in the series. I easily read it as a standalone.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.
