Description
Devices. Jolie’s got tons of them. Coping mechanisms that ensure she’s not falling victim to the mental illness that’s taken hold of both her brother and father. Helping the homeless gives Jolie much needed consistency. But when a stranger struts into her Jersey Shore creperie, writing cryptic songs on napkins and then disappearing, her world becomes anything but routine.
Reed can play the soul out of his saxophone, but he’s hiding something. Why else would he reveal so little about himself, or plan one secluded, albeit eccentric, date after another? And what’s in that backpack he carries everywhere? Then again, with her distressed brother missing, an estranged mother returning home, and a feisty grandmother acting weirder than usual, Jolie can’t decipher whether her suspicions are valid or dangerous delusions.
When inexplicable slashings of the homeless occur in her otherwise safe town, Jolie’s devices begin to fail.

Reed is absolutely genius. Jolie is as well in a different way. These two characters make this book amazing! The additional characters are such great compliments to each other in such a refreshing way. This book was hilarious and also had many ranges of feelings that can touch any reader at the drop of a hat, or a napkin! Thoroughly enjoyed this great read!
4.5 stars. This was a truly uplifting romance that tackled a lot of tough subjects - mental illness, homelessness, dysfunctional familes. Jolie is working hard to hold herself together, living her life by what she calls her "devices". These are rules she put in place to ensure she wasn't going down the same slippery slope that her father and brother took toward schizophrenia. Enter Reed, a very gorgeous, but very mysterious man, who writes her music left on napkins in her restaurant. He breaks through her defenses, and charms his way into her life. He plans very creative dates for them, but something just isn't right and doesn't add up. Lies are told, secrets are revealed, and reality crashes in.
I had lots and lots of feels throughout this entire story. My heart ached so many times. My soul swooned for Reed and all the beautiful things he tried to do for Jolie. It was an amazing story, told very well and yes, it did wrap up a little too neatly and easily, but that's what fiction is!!
Jolie has many devices she uses to cope with life. Rules to make sure that she does not display symptoms of the same mental illness that both her father and brother suffer from. Reed seems shady in the beginning, he has too many secrets.
It was difficult for me to get into this book. I just could not connect with Jolie, she seemed too contrived. Reed was problematic as well. But as the book unfolds and the characters develop, things fall into place.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.
