Description

WELCOME TO OUTCAST STATION is an anthology containing these two novellas:

The Accidental Plague by Jeanne Adams

Outcast Station is a backwater, but for BVax Scientist Ravinisha Trentham, any posting is better than washing dishes. Ravi is top in her graduating class, but only Outcast would hire a McKeonite. Someone on station wants her dead, but when a plague breaks out, Ravi may be their only hope. If the murderer gets to her first, everyone will die.

The New Badge by Nancy Northcott

Deputy Marshal Hank Tremaine crosses the wrong person and lands at Outcast Station, the armpit of the Terran colonies. His hostile boss promptly assigns him to a backcountry murder. Solving it will help redeem his reputation and get him back to more civilized space. Failing to find the killer, though, will bury his career once and for all.

A Note From the Publisher

Author Bios:

Jeanne Adams writes award-winning suspense, paranormal, mysteries and urban fantasies who specializes in thrills and suspense. Even her paranormal and urban fantasies have a suspense element, so be prepared! She loves football, baseball, dogs, Halloween and the weird. She’s also a sought-after speaker, who knows a thing or two about getting rid of the evidence… (She teaches classes for writers on body disposal, plotting suspense that sells and marketing!)

Jeanne lives in DC with her husband and two growing sons, as well as two dogs – a Lab and an Irish Water Spaniel. Don’t tell, but she’s prone to adopting more dogs when her husband isn’t looking.

Featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine and other publications, her books have been consistently hailed as “One of the best Suspense Books of the Year!” by Romantic Times. Nancy Northcott’s childhood ambition was to grow up and become Wonder Woman. Around fourth grade, she realized it was too late to acquire Amazon genes, but she still loved comic books, science fiction, fantasy, history, and romance. She currently enjoys attending and volunteering at science fiction conventions.

Nancy has written freelance articles and taught at the college level. Her most popular course was on science fiction, fantasy, and society. She has also given presentations on the Wars of the Roses and Richard III to university classes studying Shakespeare’s play about that king. A sucker for fast action and high stakes, Nancy combines the elements she loves in the books she writes.

Reviewers have described her books as melding fantasy, romance, and suspense. Library Journal gave her debut novel, Renegade, a starred review, calling it “genre fiction at its best.

Advance Praise

eanne Adams's "The Accidental Plague" and Nancy Northcott's "The New Badge", the novellas comprising OUTCAST STATION, are smart, fast-moving science fiction adventures. Fans of Jack Mcdevitt and the movie OUTLAND will love this book and the series I hope will follow.

Outcast Station is the milieu that Jeanne Adams and Nancy Northcott set their stories in much as Miller did in Lowport or Mike Resnick did in Down these Dark Spaceways or as Star Trek did in the gritty Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 accomplished perhaps best of all.

The combined volume takes up the SF traditions of a medical plague in space and couples it with the demands of the mystery thriller. Readers may remember works like James White Sector General, or Michael Crichton’s Andromeda Strain. Couple that legacy with Asimov’s mysteries such as The Caves of Steel and you may find yourself in the cold unwelcoming halls of Outcast Station. This book updates those stories and grapples with other issues as well, such as the debilitating and lingering effects of prejudice, both on those who practice it, and those on whom it is inflicted. The experiences of Ravinisha Trentham, a scientist in her home world but facing jobs beneath her education or unemployment in Earth’s society, mirror the frustrations that modern immigrants face when their hard-won credentials in their original society are devalued, or even mocked, when they travel. But Trentham finds herself in the front trench of the battle against an alien plague, trying to save the very people who hate her.

Meanwhile the law struggles to with Outcast Station as well. Hank Tremaine was better than Outcast Station but had crossed the wrong person his way up. Can he keep his head down and go along with the flow or will he be thrown against the powers that lurk at the station endangering his last chance to get his career on track?

An exciting and enjoyable exploration of both outer and inner space, Outcast Station may give you the shivers of fear and fever at the same time.
