I thought I knew quite a bit about the life of Amelia Earhart, but I learned a great deal from reading this biography. The book is engaging and the parts detailing some of her flights make the reader feel a part of the action. The details are presented in a way that isn't at all boring. I appreciate that the author doesn't assert to have Ms. Earhart figured out--quite the opposite. It's made clear that much of her life will always remain private and mysterious. I think that is part of her appeal. I would encourage this book for any young person with an interest in aviation or people with pioneering spirits. The photographs greatly enrich the biography.

With Amelia Earhart: Flying Solo, Burke introduces young readers to Amelia Earhart, a true heroine for the ages. Beginning when Earhart is a girl, she was more interested in adventure than appearing 'proper’. Among other things, she tried to build a roller coaster as a child! Despite familial upheavals and personal trials, Earhart never gave up on her dreams, and would go on to become an aviator. During her life, she earned many accolades, setting records left and right. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, in an attempt to circumnavigate the world by plane, Earhart mysteriously disappeared. Burke's writing is clear and easy to undersand, supplemented with pictures, and extra tidbits of information. Earhart is a fascinating woman and a great role model for young girls.

If you have any children with a love of history, this is the perfect gift!

We have recently started to read about historical women in history an Amelia Earhart name came up a few times. So when we saw this book we had to snap it up instantly. My daughters are so in awe of her heroic character and a pioneer for women. She will always remain an inspiration for gutsy girls wanting to follow their dreams just for the sake of the journey.
