Description

Callie Bryant, a young woman with partial amnesia, returns to her childhood home with hopes of restoring the memories that are slowly coming back. She may have been a witness to her mother's murder twenty-five years before. Instead of being welcomed, Callie finds some people just want her to leave town. Anonymous letters show up, followed by threatening phone calls. Intruders invade the house. The ante is upped when someone shoots out her front window.

The only person she trusts is reporter, Josh Hendricks. He is new in town and not a suspect at the time of her mother's death. Intrigued, he agrees to help discover why certain city officials are refusing to answer her questions. Never tell a reporter, “No.” Josh asks questions of his own throwing himself into the mystery. As time passes, their relationship deepens.

Falling in love was not part of the plan. The more they investigate, the more nervous the killer becomes. Callie and Josh are not safe. Callie is remembering, and the clock is ticking down on the killer's freedom.

Callie wants to clear her fathers name. Her father was convicted of killing her mother. But Callie is convinced he is innocent. An easy to read story about secrets and lies and adultry that ends with the truth.

Taken in by her Aunt Dee after the murder of her mother in the family home, Callie returns to her home town. She and her brother have always believed their father was innocent of the crime and although he died in prison, she now wants to prove this was the case. But along with finding attractive reporter Josh Hendricks, she also finds that she has stirred up a hornets nest and her life is in danger.

This story was set in the small town called Wellington in Iowa and there is a cast of suspects. I did enjoy this, read it easily and thought it was a good plotline but I didn’t really connect with the characters. I’m starting to think it’s a case of ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ though. I think it’s because I’ve read and loved so many Australian rural town stories, so this had a totally different ‘voice’ which I didn’t enjoy as much.
I would put this in the romantic suspense category and I’m sure it would appeal to many readers.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy to read and review.

I was at times gripped by the book and at times it was slow and predictable. I have to admit that Callie seemed a bit naive in her approach to solving the murder of her mother. It was frustrating to read her bumbling attempts at luring the murderer to show himself.

Though there are several strong suspects, the final revelation was a bit of a surprise. It just shows you again, you can never truly know someone, more so when you are 6 years old and there were many decades to soften the harsh edges of memory.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
