I received a copy of this book for review on netgalley.
First off this is the story of Simon. We learn of his birth and the introduction of a Dr Brockman early on. A shadowy character that weaves in and out of Simon's life. When Simon is a teenager, his girlfriend Julia was viciously murdered by a ritualistic knife called an athame and Simon is the prime suspect.
First off let me say I did enjoy this book. I would give it 3.5 stars but good reads doesn't seem to let me give half ratings so I gave it 3 stars. This book does have problems that prevented it from me giving it a higher rating.
After Julia's death her parents become amateur sleuths with the sheriffs help and I disliked their characters. They were played too clueless, bumbling for me and also I'm still not sure how you get a footprint and go to the library with that info, type something into a computer search engine and get the brand of sneaker out of that.
The book moved a bit too quickly for me and some transitions were a bit jarring but in the end I enjoyed it because it did what I think it needed to do.
This book in general is a mystery. A mystery with Satanic overtones but a mystery nonetheless. It set the mood at Simon's birth, then increased the tension with the doctors visit/gift at Simon's 1st birthday. It kept sprinkling ominous scenes throughout the book that made me want to keep reading to find out the conclusion. In the end I wish some characters like the Dr. and Simons Godmother had a bigger role and Characters like Julia's parents a smaller one. I also wish some of the darker story points were more fleshed out.
In general though I did think this was a fun little book and I would recommend it
Brilliant thriller, satanic, family book. Really enjoyed it. Sad for the family and I never guessed the ending, which is not like me.
Read the whole.book on a 13 hour flight from bangkok. Journey was still awful. Hope there will be another book like this again. It was not sick or distasteful.. keep them coming. Thanks.
