Description

From Chris Pavesic, the author of Starter Zone: The Revelation Chronicles, comes the first book in a new steampunk mystery series.

When the Temples north of Chiaroscuro are burned and followers of the Sun Goddess are murdered, Catherine, a bard of the Ealdoth Temple, sets out to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. With only the help of a traveling group of minstrels and a retired fae investigator, Catherine must solve the mystery before more people are killed.

So saddle up your clockwork mount, buckle on your electro-dagger, and join Catherine as she finds herself pitted against members of her own Temple, rogue members of the Seelie Court, and a seemingly unstoppable army of undead.

In Chiaroscuro it’s important to keep the faith.

Advance Praise

Early Praise from Windy City Reviews:

I was very pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book. From the moment you start reading, you are plummeted into the world of mechanicals and zombies and hooked with wonderful descriptions of the landscape. I truly enjoyed her descriptions of the land, the costumes, and the appearances of different people. They are so clear you can actually put yourself in the book in a matter of minutes. It is a world where the undead are real but the horses are not.

I enjoyed it, and this is not the genre I typically read. People who enjoy reading fantasy, steampunk, and science fiction as well as anyone looking for a good story and a bit of escapism will really like reading this story.

I enjoyed the author’s other series, The Revelation Chronicles, which I also found on Netgalley. This new series has such a different narrative feel, but I enjoyed it just as much. Funny and dire, engaging character development, truly creepy villains and monsters, and wonderful world building. It does have a Victorian steampunk feel that blends well with the magic of the fae.

The characters - both protagonists and villains - are richly drawn and very exciting. I really like it when stories treat villains as real characters and present their point of view.

I love the writing, which is clear, complete, witty, and well thought out. It is a very intriguing world with many tantalizing mysteries including a few that aren't revealed by the very complete but still-leaves-you-wanting-more ending of this installment.

If I could send a note directly to the author, it would be "Write More. Write Faster. I want to read your next book."

Great story! This was my first “steampunk” read so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The characters were really engaging. The chapters rotated between the perceptions of the characters, which was a little disorienting at first. I will definitely look for more in this series!

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for a copy of this book!

Thank you to Netgalley and Chris Pavesic for the eARC I received in exchange for an honest review.  The opinions expressed in this review belong solely to Plot Monster.

Unquiet Dead is an eclectic blend of various genres that is sure to keep the reader wondering.  Horror.  Fantasy.  Steampunk.  This book has it all.

It is extremely detailed and it is easy to miss pertinent facts if you are not paying attention.  Some parts I had to reread in order to make sure I was adequately absorbing the story.  With that being said it is not a particularly difficult read.

If you are bored with the same old story lines and tropes in your genre of choice, I assure you that you will thoroughly enjoy the originality of this book.

It is a little on the short side and there are a few elements that leave more questions than answers.  However, I do not believe that this takes away from the reader's enjoyment but rather leaves them wanting more.

I would recommend this book to fans of fantasy and steampunk.

This was my first steampunk novel and I must admit I was a bit unsure about reading it. I’m glad I took the plunge. The author has created an interesting, complex world filled with an abundance of intriguing characters and a solid plot. Lots of ups and downs, twists and turns. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely look for more from this author.
My thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for my honest review.
