Description

Jagged Waters is the third book in the Southern Skyes family saga, carving some exciting new names on the family tree.

Spicy Irish miss, Mariah Malone, is a young convict unjustly condemned to New South Wales, Australia, to serve her sentence for life. During the transport, her ship encounters a frightening, rocky demise, and the handful of survivors are washed up on King Island to await rescue.

It is during this time of uncertainty and fear, Mariah’s knowledge of the entrancing surroundings—both land and sea—of this Australian island and beyond stimulates her ever-tumbling thoughts. She also learns more about herself: her morality, her fortitude, and her destiny. And somewhere in the midst of that, she falls in love.

And with this love, she creates a family of her own in Van Diemen’s Land, one that will inevitably carry her into the lives of the Skyes and McCabes, strengthening this family legacy through another gnarled joining, both tumultuous and enriching.

Jagged Waters by Sharyn Bradford Lunn is the third book in the Southern Skyes family saga. This is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy historical romance stories. Mariah Malone had a nice normal life until a thief wearing similar clothing to her throws a bolt of lace at her, then the next thing Mariah knows is that she is being convicted of theft and sentenced to a life in New South Wales, Australia. Yet, fate has a different plan for Miss Malone as the ship transporting her to a life sentence is shipwrecked and she is left stranded on King Island. Does Mariah have what it takes to survive and will she find love along the way?

Jagged Waters by Sharyn Bradford Lunn was an enjoyable book; I really liked how the book began in the future and then transitioned to the past as it gave the book the feel of a giant flashback. The author did an amazing job in making everything seem so real with the way that she provided vivid descriptions of every scene. The way she described the shipwreck as it was happening allowed me to imagine myself on the ship, alongside the convicts. The level of emotions I felt while reading this book ranged all the way from disgust when some women would not allow Mariah to hold on to a door to keep afloat in the water, to hope when she managed to survive against all odds. I have to say that I really enjoyed this book as a standalone novel, but now I definitely want to check out the rest of the series!

I greatly enjoyed this book. I was hoping the story would have progressed further, but will just look for the next book in this series. I learned a few new, interesting things regarding the transportation of convicts to New South Wales. I always enjoy a book that has a good storyline and I am able to garner some historical information as well. I loved the lead characters and their struggle to establish a relationship, given Mariah's status as a convict. I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion. As affirmation of the quality of this book, I plan to buy the next in the series.
