Description

You'll find exclusive excerpts of four novels and three nonfiction titles with April publication dates in this sampler. First up is Country Dark, award-winning Chris Offutt’s first novel in twenty years, set in rural Kentucky from the Korean War to 1970. Next are three debuts, starting with Luke Allnutt’s We Own the Sky, about a young father and husband confronting devastating loss. This I Know by Eldonna Edwards and The Oracle Year by Charles Soule both deal with an ability to predict the future albeit in very different styles.

In nonfiction, Mohammed Al Samawi’s harrowing memoir The Fox Hunt recounts his escape from Yemen’s civil war via a plan hatched on social media. Can’t Help Myself, Meredith Goldstein’s memoir is a humorous, heartfelt look at giving advice as the Boston Globe’s Love Letters columnist while her own romantic life is in tatters. Finally, read a fascinating description by mental illness expert Barbara Lipska on the two months of dementia and schizophrenia she experienced as the result of cancer in her brain in The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind: My Tale of Madness and Recovery.

This is a great collection of excerpts of upcoming books for the month of April 2018.

It contains an introduction followed by a section with a list of "Extra Attention", "Literary Favorites and Emerging Talents", debut fiction, commercial fiction, and nonfiction titles. Then it has a section of "Week by Week" title releases and at the end some book excerpts that were originally published in Buzz Books 2018: Spring/Summer. I particularly enjoyed the excerpt for THE ORACLE YEAR by CHARLES SOULE.

Overall, a great list of buzzing titles for the month of April 2018.

What an ideal tool for anyone who is interested in what we will be reading in the next few months. April's Buzz Books includes excerpts of four novels: Country Dark by Chris Offutt, We Own the Sky by Luke Allnutt, This I Know by Eldonna Edwards, and The Oracle Year by Charles Soule. There are also excerpts from three nonfiction titles: The Fox Hunt by Mohammed Al Samawi, Can't Help Myself by Meredith Goldstein and The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind: My Tale of Madness and Recovery by Barbara Lipska. Buzz Books also lists titles by categories such as Extra Attention, Literary Favorites and Emerging Talents, Debut Fiction, Commercial Fiction and Nonfiction as well as a list of April titles by publishing date. All in all, a very useful tool.

I enjoyed several of these books from the excerpts, most notably the non-fiction title The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind by Barbara K. Lipska, I also found Meredith Goldstein’s book excerpt intriguing, Cant Help Myself. I look forward to reading both of these books.

Thank you, Publishers Lunch, for putting together this collection of books to be released in April, which seems to be a good month for new releases! Although each seems intriguing, I was more drawn to the nonfiction selections, namely The Fox Hunt: A Refugee's Memoir of Coming to America and The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind: My Tale of Madness and Recovery.

Great summary of what to look out for this month! Titles by some of my favorites are on the horizon.

This Buzz book didn't have as many books catch my attention as most, however the books that sounded good sounded AMAZING.

This I Know, by Eldonna Edwards sounds like a really strange read, conceptually. But if the preview is any indication, the novel is incredible. The book starts out in the womb. Yeah, I know what you are thinking "pass. Not for me" , but Edwards carries out this off scene flawlessly. I can hardly wait to read the rest of the book.

The other book that captivated me was Mohammed Al Samawi's The Fox Hunt . I usually have trouble getting into non fiction, but this preview was grippimg. It was fast paced, intriguing and left me worried for Samawi. I'm considering it a personal "must read".

If you are an obsessive reader like I am, you may find it difficult to find enough books to read. And, since most books are expensive, you probably like to make sure that you will like a book before actually buy one. Unfortunately, most of the times, readers only get to read a short summary or a short excerpt from the first chapter.

On the other hand, In Buzz Books Monthly, gives a plethora of ways to check out a book. Firstly, this book gives a page or two summary of the book. This is then followed by the FULL first chapter of each book. If the first chapter is short, they include a second chapter. After the sample, the book follows up with information about the author. I like that because it often lists other books they have written and, any awards they may have won. Plus, it, also, may give me information about what makes this author an authority on the subject of the book which is, certainly, important for non-fiction book.

The April book gives excerpts from four novels and three non-fiction books. When I was done reading this, I knew which books I wanted to read. Therefore, I feel comfortable spending money to buy any of my chosen books. Another advantage of Buzz Books, I found some new authors to add to my list. I also like that this comes out every month, which keeps me up-to-date on the latest books.

The greatest advantage of this book is that you can get it for FREE on Amazon!

I really enjoyed reading excerpts from some upcoming novels to decided if I want to add some to my ever growing TBR pile. I found 3 out of 7 I was really interested in and want to pick up! The others I'll keep on my radar for future reference if I hear a lot! Glad I got the chance to check this out.
