Brisbane, 1983: A lost father, a mute brother, a mum in jail, a heroin dealer for a stepfather and a notorious crim for a babysitter. It's not as if Eli's life isn't complicated enough already. This is a very unusual novel. I found it hard to get into but by the end of the first chapter I was hooked. The two main characters- brothers Eli and August- are unforgettable. The story is complicated, fantastic and satisfying- few books make me laugh out loud or cry and this one achieved both. The writing is amazing. I will not attempt to give a synopsis of the story- just make sure you get a copy!
Trent Dalton is my new favourite Australian author.
