The Christmas Prayer by Wanda Brunstetter is a short story about Cynthia Cooper’s trip from Independence, Missouri to California in 1850.
Cynthia and her mother are traveling with the man she has agreed to marry along with two other wagons, Cole and his sister Virginia who are in search of wealth by hopefully striking gold, and Jack and his two small children who are planning on joining his brother and running a cattle ranch.
The story follows the wagon train as they travel across the west in hopes of getting to California by Christmas. Friendships are made, relationships are re-evaluated, and love is found in this exciting read by Wanda.
I was able to finish this story in just a short time, which was good because it was very captivating. The characters were well-written and it was easy to relate to Cynthia and the other travelers.

Wanda E. Brunstetter is known for her Amish stories. I enjoy and have read many of them. When I saw this title and read the description, I was excited to read something a little different by her. As the introduction tells us, this is a story about three different families. They each have met up in Independence, Missouri in April 1850 to join a wagon train. They all three arrived late and the other wagons have already left for California. Thinking they can catch the wagon train, they vote to continue on. It is unusual and foolhardy to leave at such a late date. Due to hardships and weather, there is a good chance they can get caught in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Wanda is a master at character development. Although the entire story is written about just three families, Wanda gives us a great variety of personalities. We have a brother and his sister wanting to strike it rich in the gold mines. We have a widower and his two small children traveling West to join his brother already established there. Our main character Cynthia Cooper and her mother are fleeing to California. Her father has recently died and left them penniless. Cynthia is engaged to Walter Prentice, who is headed to California to open several stores. If the story has a villain, Walter would be it. Although this was a short story and a quick read, it was interesting and entertaining. I would recommend this book.

This book takes place in 1850 along the California Trail. After Cynthia Cooper’s father died, she and her mother join Cynthia’s fiancé, Walter, to travel cross-country to start a new life.

They face trials along the way and as Cynthia observes how Walter faces the hardships, compared to the other men in the wagon train, she begins to question her plans to marry Walter.

Being faced with having to stop along the way for a long time, due to winter weather, and all the members having to live together in a small cabin, we see how each character develops and how love and friendships develop among the group.

This was a very quick, enjoyable read that I highly recommend to others.

This is a great addtion to the collection of Christian fiction that Wanda Brunstetter writes. She has taken a break from Amish fiction to take her readers back to the westward movement. This book is an exciting adventure of a small wagon train heading to California. The setting is perfectly depicted and each character is well described-most you love, some will ruffle your feathers and make the story very interesting. It was a terrific book and I loved the fact that Wanda choose another subject and era to write about. She is a very talented writer and this book showcases her ability to change genres.

I was so excited to get a copy of this!. Wanda Brunstetter is an automatic read author for me! Note: this is a short novella, not a full length novel, but still a good read.

Cynthia is traveling with her mother and the man she's engaged to marry across the country back in 1850 to start a new life in California. Along for the journey in other covered wagons are Cole and his sister, Ginny and Jack and his two children.

The journey gives Cynthia plenty of time to think about what she really wants for her future. But when the journey gets harder than anyone could imagine, can faith in God pull them through?

I really enjoyed this story. It was a light read due to the length, but I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen to the characters. I was also genuinely surprised at one of the events. You can't go wrong in this day and age with a story based in faith by Ms. Brunstetter. Her stories always lift my spirits.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy. All opinions are my own. This book goes on sale on or around September 1st, 2018.

The Christmas Prayer is a charming, historical novella that focuses around twenty year old Cynthia Cooper who's family has recently fallen on hard times. After her father's passing, Cynthia and her mother are left in poor financial shape, and her mother especially, had grown accustomed to the finer things in life. As a means of providing for herself and her mother, Cynthia accepts a marriage proposal from a successful businessman named Walter. However, accepting the marriage proposal means uprooting her life from New York, and traveling cross country in a covered wagon to begin a new life in California. Their journey will place them in close contact with two other families along the way. Jack is heading west to help his brother out on his cattle ranch, and to give his two children a better life after the death of his wife and their mother. Cole, a blacksmith by trade, is headed west at the prospect of gold, and is bringing his sister, Virginia a schoolteacher, along with him.

Struggles and trials abound the travelers as they continue to try and make their way to California, and soon Cynthia discovers the biggest challenge of all is dealing with Walter's attitude to everything happening along their journey. Cynthia begins to question whether or not a marriage to Walter is truly what God could have planned for her, especially when she sees the kindness that abounds in both Cole and Jack on their travels. Their journey reaches a dangerous point when the weather turns bad, and they are forced to hunker down and spend Christmas in a small, abandoned cabin they discover in the woods. It's here in the cabin however, that they truly discover the real meaning of Christmas, and learn that God has a plan for each and every one of them if they'll only be willing to follow it.

All in all, this sweet novella really emphasized the importance of faith, and kept me intrigued right from the opening lines. I really enjoyed all the characters, with the exception of Walter, and I appreciated the maturity shown by Cynthia in the choices she makes to try and help her family. The writing style and the well developed characters will leave the reader feeling like they're experiencing everything right along with Cynthia, and I definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a sweet historical read this holiday season.

The Christmas Prayer by Wanda Brunstetter is a beautiful story of relying on God’s grace and keeping hope alive through prayer. It is set in 1850 as a group of travelers set out from Independence MO for California. There are only three wagons in the group as they missed joining up with the larger wagon train that recently left. The wagons are occupied by Walter, his fiancé Cynthia and her mother; widower Jack and his two children- Alan and Amelia; and Cole and his sister Virginia. Walter is a business owner from New York and plans to open several businesses when they arrive in California, Jack is joining his brother in his cattle ranching and Cole plans to search for gold. If the gold venture doesn’t pan out Cole can fall back on his training as a blacksmith. Not unexpectedly they meet up with several delays and find themselves caught in a snowstorm in the mountains as Christmas approaches. Can their reliance on God and working as team save all of their lives? Will they make to California or be forced to settle somewhere else?
This is a short book and I was able to read it in one sitting. The characters are so real to life that I didn’t want to put it down. I wanted to know if and how they would manage. The characters have their differences and nerves must be short at times though the focus is on working as a team to try to survive. As with many of Wanda Brunstetter’s stories there is a surprise twist at the end. I loved this story and give it 5 of 5 stars. It will make a lovely Christmas gift.

A very different book from what Wanda has written but I loved it anyway, but love all of Wanda's books anyway
This book has taken me away from all of my troubles and I surely hated coming back to the real world.
At first, when I seen the cover I thought it was the sequel to the Hope jar. But, it wasn't.
I loved the fellowship of the wagon train but what I didn't like was that there was someone in the crowd that always spoils or tries to for everyone else.
Wanda has a of making each person in the story come alive and matching their feelings with yours or in how you connect with them.
I enjoyed this story particularly because in 2006 my family and I had a chance to visit the Sierra Nevada's.
It was a sight to behold. I'll never forget it. This was another way that I could relate to this story. I couldn't imagine traveling that by covered wagon!!
I give this book 5 stars because of the wonderful historical research behind it.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book

The Christmas Prayer is a quick, clean and sweet historical read. I loved main character Cynthia Cooper from the start. I loved seeing through her eyes what life was like in 1850 going on the California Trail at Christmas time. I could not imagine what they would have endured during those times.
I give The Christmas Prayer 5 plus stars. I would highly recommend it to readers who love a great, inspiring faith filled Christmas stories.

This Christmas book written by Wanda E. Brunstetter regarding a small band of western pioneers warms the heart. It's a sweet story with some real sweet Christmas feelings happening here. As the little wagon group has delays and some difficulties underway they find themselves in a desperate situation and find refuge in the mountains. As they find themselves together for much longer than expected, feelings and plans change.

I really enjoyed the storyline and it a really enjoyable read. It is probably more of a novella length, but seems to develop the characters well.

Great descriptions in A Christmas Prayer took me on a trip with Cynthia and her Mother has they endure a long hard wagon trip across country. They learn to live with each other as they endure hardships and dangers on the trail.

There were some great character descriptions and Cynthia learned that not everyone is as they seem up front. I personally loved the story about the old man with the cabin in the woods. It was a great reminder to care for others as much as we can.

A Christmas Prayer has a great Christian story and lesson. We might not always know why things happen but God helps understand it's for the better.

A great read!

This was a different type of book for Wanda, but I must say I really enjoyed it. It was about 3 families traveling to California but wagon train. They are behind by a couple months, and when they get to the Sierra Nevada's they run into a blizzard. Cole, the wagon train leader found a small cabin and they moved in to wait out the storm. There's a lot that goes on in this story, but I don't want to give the story away. I give this book 5 stars. Keep up the good Wanda.

This was a very enjoyable novella, but not really a Christmas story. Rather the story ends at Christmas time.

Cynthia Cooper is an engaged woman in a marriage-to-be arranged by her mother. Her fiance, Walter, is much older than Cynthia. He is a business man who owns two stores in New York and now wants to take Cynthia and her mother to California where he wants to open another store. But Walter is hard headed, opinionated, and knows nothing about travel to California via wagon train. When they miss the wagon train, Walter joins with two other men to head to California. Jack Simpson has lost his wife and is heading to California with his two young children to join his brother on his cattle ranch. Cole and his sister, Virginia, are heading to California so Cole can seek gold and his sister can continue teaching. Cole and Jack are outdoors men and have some idea what they are getting into. Walter refuses to listen to any of their advice.

Water set my teeth on edge from the very beginning. I totally understood Cynthia's questioning herself as to whether this is the man she should really marry. Cynthia's mother wasn't much better as she constantly pushed Cynthia and Walter together. Jack and Cole carried the brunt of the load throughout the journey; and if it hadn't been for them, they would never have made it to California. Jack's children were adorable. Alan a typical little boy interested in everything and always getting into mischief. Amanda was such a sweetheart, and it was sad that she wouldn't talk after seeing her mother die.

I loved the ending and how everything was wrapped up at Christmas time especially with the appearance of a friendly "Santa Clause."

Enjoyable novella that was nice to spend an afternoon reading.

If you enjoy reading Wanda Brunstetter's books you will also enjoy A Christmas Prayer. Many women kept diaries in covered wagons along the trail west. What a treasure if I found one among my grandparents things when I was young. I enjoyed reading Cynthia's accounts in this story while the characters came alive as they chopped wood, argued and learned to work and live together in order to survive under unimaginable circumstance.

Each person had a reason for their journey. After months of enduring hardships these reasons shifted. Certain plans were no longer concrete. I enjoyed the resiliency and strength of character as it emerged for Cynthia. She began as a young woman eager to find security with Walter to emerging into a strong woman ready to strike out on her own if need be.

We are so used to Wanda Brunstetter writing Amish fiction that this book is a wonderful surprise. I recommend A Christmas Prayer as a gift-worthy book for anyone on your gift list who loves historical fiction and a copy for yourself!

The Christmas Prayers is a novella that was first published in 2014 in Barbour's Christmas Collection titled,The Westward Christmas Brides Collection: 9 Historical Romances Answer the Call of the American West. I love Barbour collections and this was one of my favorite novellas in it.
Cynthia Cooper promises to marry a man many years older than her named Walter. Now this will not be a love match on Cynthia's part but rather a match to ensure her and her mother have security financially and otherwise. Her mother,Mable encourages this match because she will be taken care of as well. Late in the season 3 wagons set out on the way to California and the wagon Walter is leading with Cynthia, her mother and others falls behind and becomes separated from the other wagons. They do their best on the journey but tempers become short as food runs low and after falling behind so much they run into snow. Finding what they think is an abandoned cabin in the woods the members take shelter for weeks before the cabin's owner comes back. After their explanation he understands why they were there and when it's warm enough they move on. Walter reveals a secret to Cynthia during their time in the cabin and all are happy. It is a Christmas Prayer that leaves Cynthia's heart filled with joy.

In this story we join Cynthia, her mother Mable, Virginia, Walter, Jack and Cole along with Jack’s 2 children. They are off to a late start on their journey westward to California, with hopes of catching up to the wagon train that left a week before. We join them on their journey and their struggles. To help us enter into the spirit of the season, Wanda Brunstetter gives us the gift of a heart-warming Christmas story. Mrs. Brunstetter brings as much love and light to this story of the wagon train’s journey as she does to her Amish novels. Every character is interesting and fits their place well in the storyline. The travelers find themselves in very different circumstances than they had hoped for on Christmas Day, As they cling tightly to their faith during difficult days, they experience a real Christmas miracle. There’s also a couple of romances to add sweetness to the story. This book is now on my Christmas reading list to enjoy again each Christmas season.

This book is perfect if you need a shorter, inspiring story to read during the busy holiday season, The cover of this book is beautiful and would make a perfect book to give as a Christmas gift.

A different read from the author’s usual Amish stories, this one will keep your attention, and is more like a novella, as I read it in about an hour.
Can you imagine living like the pioneers of our country did, leaving what they had in the east to travel to the western part. This ends up being one small wagon train, with only three wagons, so we really do get to know each of the members of this small party.
At first you won’t see much in common between this group, but by the end, which sure ended differently that I saw coming, and I loved that there was an epilogue.
Although, parts of the story felt rushed, it is a feel-good Christmas read.

Cynthia Cooper is traveling with her mother and fiancee', Walter, in a wagon train with two other wagons, all headed to California. They missed the big wagon train by one week and are in hopes of catching up with them. Walter has a head for business and not much else. He is moody and angry and doesn't pull his weight with the other men in the group. Cynthia, naturally, begins to have doubts about marrying Walter, but feels she has to as he will also support Cynthia's widowed mother. Walter plan to open businesses in California.
Cole is tired of being a blacksmith and hopes to strike it rich with gold once in California. His sister, Virginia, is traveling with him.
Jack plans on helping his brother at his cattle ranch. Jack is a widower and traveling with him are his two children, Alan and Amelia. Amelia has not spoken one word since witnessing her mother's accidental death. Jack hopes the change in environment will be good for his daughter and will prompt her to speak once again.
Snow detains the small group in the Sierra Mountains. Fortunately, Cole discovers an abandoned cabin for the group to hunker down in. The men hunt for fresh meat and collect wood for heat.
The children worry that Santa won't bring them anything as they are still in the cabin at Christmas. Cynthia has no intention of letting the sweet children go without anything, while Walter is so uncaring about anyone but himself.
Such a sweet, sweet story of God's mercy and getting His people through some very hard times and difficult circumstances.

My thoughts: THE CHRISTMAS PRAYER is a historical set on the wagon trail by Wanda Brunstetter. This was an awesome novella! I totally loved it. There are there "families" traveling west together since they missed the wagon train that was leaving, and they were a brother, a sister, a widower and his two children, and a mother and daughter with the daughter's finance. I figured out how the story would pan out before I got to the end, but that was okay I enjoyed getting there.

I read this story quickly, at church in the hour and a half between services and gave my copy away to a woman at church who is a huge Wanda Brunstetter fan as she was practically begging for it as soon as she saw the book.

There are several different Point of Views in the book, but they are seamlessly done. This was a great wagon trail Christmas story with a satisfying ending.

This is not Amish.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Traveling to California, engaged to a man 15 years her senior, with her widowed Mother and two other families was not something Cynthia had ever imagined doing. But the death of her father, finding out he had left her and her mother destitute, made it the only logical choice. Once she married Walter, her mother would be taken care of for the rest of her life. That was what was important. It didn't matter that she didn't love him, she would work hard to be a good wife. As the trip goes on, things just get more complicated. A surprise ending will bring a smile to your face and Heart!

This is one of those books that you pick up and don't put down until the last page. Wanda Brunstetter has written a book about the Oregon trail and has done it in a way that is different. Instead of describing the hardships of the journey she focuses on the people. The Christmas Prayer follows three familes as they try to catch up to the wagons that left before them out of Independence, Missouri. Everyone has their future all planned and simply need to get to California to begin their new lives. But are those plans God's or does He have something better in mind?
If I have a negative about the story it would be how everything is wrapped up with a bow at the end. It seemed the story ended so abruptly. I would love a sequel to see what happens to the characters as they settle in their new lives.
I voluntarily received this book from netgalley.

The cover by itself is enough to grab anyone's attention. It makes me feel chilly as I see the snow high on the mountaintops. I couldn't wait to dig into the story and I must say it was such a beautifully written story I wanted it to last forever. The flow was just right and gives readers time to know the characters better.

Traveling in April 1850 will be an adventure for a group that has a long way to go to reach their destination. Their goal of getting to California by December will be tested by the weather, wagon repairs and supplies diminishing.

Each character has a reason to want to get to California. Will they see their dream come true? As they continue on their journey, the weather takes a turn for the worse. Will they find shelter in time before the snow traps them in their wagons? I loved the different personalities and how they seemed to get along for the most part. There is one person who is so unpleasant I was hoping he would give up and return to his old home. I always wonder why God places someone in our path that is hard to like? I'm sure it is because we need to continue to remember to give grace to others.

The story is filled with adventure and hardship. Through it all will the travelers appreciate how God supplies them with what they need? This Christmas will be different for each one, but it promises to bring hope, joy and the true spirit of Christmas.

I received a copy of this book from the author . The review is my own opinion.

The Christmas Prayer is the new acclaimed novel by Wanda E. Brunstetter, published at the beginning of September by Barbour.
The most beloved writer of Amish fiction this time will present to her readers the perfect novel for Christmas; perfect for thinking that the festivity will realize all their dreams, including the most impossible ones.
Independence, Missouri, 1850. Cynthia Cooper and her mother are leaving for California in company of other people. Cynthia, orphan of her dad who left both of them penniless, is constricted to marry, once arrived in California, Walter, a man she doesn't love at all for character. The girl keeps a diary for all the time she will spend in this, as she says: "2000-mile journey west."
The girl, understands during the trip that no, Walter is not the proper man for her, for too many reasons, and she prays that her destiny could change, also thinking that that one isn't the best solution for her. Of course she doesn't want to upset her mother and she is ready to marrying Walter for making her happy.
Of course she doesn't want to upset her mother. Walter would mean the solution of their financial problems.
The day of Christmas all her problems will be sorted out and Cynthia will realize her project of happiness with someone else close to her with which she discovers in the while, more affinities.

Highly recommended.

The Christmas Prayer is set in Missouri in the 1850's. Cynthia and her mother travel cross-country to a new life in Calfornia,, traveling by wagon train with Cynthia's finance. They miss the wagon train leader and a company of three wagons led by an inexperienced trail guide set off on their journey. The story is laced with hardships of extreme cold, lack of food, and an adequate place to stay out of the weather.

The descriptions of the countryside made me feel like I was traveling along with them. It was a wonderfully well-written Christian Christmas story laced with inspirational instances of God's love and providing for them in their time of need. The characters were well-developed and seemed to fit the time period well.

The Christmas Prayer is filled with hope, new-found love, and inspiration. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

A Christmas Prayer by Wanda Brunstetter is a sweet and captivating historical novella. Set in the mid-1800s, readers travel with a small group of strangers on their way West to start new lives. Interest in their journey is kept high as the trip is fraught with troubles--broken wagon parts, unfamiliar Indians, frightening wolves, crossing deep rivers and steep mountains and ultimately, weather. Strangers become friends and relationships change as they work together and help each other through difficult circumstances. The author gives a realistic depiction of this era through the use of journal entries by Cynthia, the story's heroine, as well as the narrative of the story. Engaged to be married, and yet not sure of God's will in the union, Cynthia questions her decision to marry Walter, an older and somewhat stern businessman. What about love--will she give that up to find financial security for herself and her mother? As the journey continues and the story unfolds romantic tension abounds and there's a sigh of satisfaction as things are all too quickly wrapped up. (I'd like to have seen a bit more to the story of these travelers--perhaps there will be a sequel?) A Christmas Prayer, a quick, easy read, filled with engaging characters, and reminders of a time gone by, is a charming story from a beloved author.

The Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter takes us back to April 15, 1850. Cynthia Cooper along with her mother, Mabel are embarking on a journey to California via wagon train. They are going with Cynthia’s fiancé, Walter Prentice. They are late arriving in Independence, Missouri and the wagon train they were joining has already departed. Instead, they link up with two other families and begin their long journey to California. The other parties in the train are Cole Edwards along with his sister, Virginia as well as Jack Simpson, a widower traveling with his two young children, Alan and Amelia. Rain, mud and wagon repairs delay their journey. The group find themselves at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains when snow begins to fall. Thankfully, Cole finds an empty cabin where they stay while they wait for better weather. Eight weeks later they are still in the cabin and Christmas is approaching. The ladies try to figure out how to provide Christmas for the children with their meager supplies. The more time Cynthia spends in Walter’s company, the less she wishes to marry him. How else, though, can she provide for her mother since their father died leaving them penniless. Cynthia decides to pray on the matter and leave it with God. What choice will Cynthia make? Will this group of intrepid travelers make it to California?

The Christmas Prayer is a well-written novel with steady pacing and smooth transitions. The POV switches between a couple of the characters allowing readers different perspectives. The Christmas Prayer is a short story of 176 pages. I did feel it was a little predictable and the ending was rushed, but I appreciated the epilogue. The paperback version is just lovely with a beautiful cover that has metallic red border and pretty edging around each page. Wanda Brunstetter captured the spirit of a wagon train and the feelings the people were experiencing. It was a long, grueling journey where anything could happen. Illness, wagon repairs, sick animals, lack of food, Indians, wild animals, mud bogging down the wagons are just a few things that they would encounter. The people could not ride continually because it would wear out the oxen. The walking had to be exhausting. I like how the author included Cynthia’s journey entries. It allows readers a peek at her thoughts and what she was feeling. I liked the variety of characters with one of my favorites being Abe Jones. The Christian element is light, but the point is made. God is there for us. Prayer and steadfast faith will help you get through the tough times. We need to rely fully on Him, for with God, all things are possible. The ending is happy and heartwarming. The Christmas Prayer is a sweet, historical romance. My rating for The Christmas Prayer is 4 out of 5 stars.

Wanda E. Brunstetter is one of the best authors I have ever read. Her stories are so intriguing that even my Mother, who has never been a fan of Fiction story books, has started to read her stories. She is a true storyteller who creates story-lines that truly speak to your heart.

A Christmas Prayer is just one of many of these stories that we have come to love so much. This story is set in 1850 in the Winter, of course, across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Cynthia Cooper, her mother and the man who she’s pledged her hand in marriage to, head through the mountains to find hope in a new place. Only Cynthia isn’t so sure this is what she’s meant to have in her life and a widowed stranger leaves her questioning her choices on this path as she trudges ahead. A surprise twist leaves Cynthia confused but able to follow her heart in the end, bringing forth a simple Christmas miracle and a love that will last all time.

This is a smaller sized book with a shorter story filling the pages. It’s just a simple, warm read for the chilly Winter days. Grab yourself a hot cup of cocoa and enjoy!

With truly likable characters, a sprinkling of adventure, and a wisp of clean romance, The Christmas Prayer, by Wanda E. Brunstetter, is the perfect book for an afternoon of cozy reading. Ms. Brunstetter’s writing style is engaging and easy to read. The plot is quickly paced, and the descriptive story-telling makes the historic settings real and vibrant. As an historical fiction novella, The Christmas Prayer is an endearing story of perseverance and faith. It is a story of hope, courage, and new beginnings.
The frequent use of diary entries to further the story and reveal the characters’ thoughts and feelings is particularly enjoyable and relatable. The characters’ struggles, insecurities, fears, and beliefs are authentic and moving. Even though the characters endure real trials that test their assumptions and their faith, the light of God’s mercy shines through with the restorative power of grace and second chances. With warmth and heart, this novella also places a significant emphasis on family and the ways in which family members support, encourage, and protect one another.
The Christmas Prayer is a memorable holiday tale that could even be a nice read-aloud for the whole family. It would also make a thoughtful gift for a friend or relative. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction that is inspirational, wholesome, and uplifting.

This story sounded familiar, so after investigating I discovered that it released in 2014 in The Westward Christmas Brides Collection. I had read it previously but re-read it to refresh my memory.
In April 1850, three wagons head to California from Missouri. Cynthia is in one wagon with her mother and the man she has promised to marry. Only she doesn't love him. She only wants financial security for her mother and herself. Another wagon holds a brother and sister and another a widowed father with two small children. They face many obstacles on their long and slow journey. Loose wagon wheels, rain storms, boggy mud, deep rivers not to mention threatening snow. Their original plan was to reach California before Christmas but these setbacks stood in the way. As their food supplies were getting low and snow impeded their search for live game, even the Donner Party was mentioned. How will they ever survive and what will Cynthia do as she realizes more and more what a heel her future husband is?
This was a really sweet novella, full of action, friendship, love and danger. I feel like it could easily be turned into a full length novel as the ending seemed kind of rushed. Only the epilogue told of their reaching California and what happened a few months later. But overall I enjoyed reading it once again.

Short but sweet story about faith and the miracle of prayer.

This story is an example of a prayer being answered during the Christmas season. I loved the story and the message. GOD has a plan for Cynthia. She must learn to trust that everything will work out.

Wanda Brunstetter always writes wonderful stories that transport you to another place or time. This is no exception. I enjoy reading anything she writes.

I am reading this in September but it is getting me in the holiday spirit.

The Christmas Prayer

Three wagons traveling from Missouri to California in December. Hoping to make it there by Christmas but the weather has other ideas. A brother/sister in one wagon, a single father with his two children in one and then there is Cynthia, her mother and Walter. It is always an adventure traveling back in 1850, takes a long time by wagon.

I really enjoyed the time they spent in an cabin in the woods they found abandoned. Everyone got a chance to really becomes friends. They end up there during Christmas. Loved the surprise they had, it was so special. Read and see what happens.

Even though some may think a little early for Christmas books, you will still enjoy this short historical book.

It's April, 1850 and 3 covered wagons head out from Independence, Missouri for California. A small group of travelers hoping to catch up with a larger wagon train. An interesting group of people - a widower with 2 young children, a blacksmith and his sister and a New York businessman planning to start a business in California. This unlikely gentleman has a young fiancé and her mother under his care. The rigors of the trail along with other setbacks finds the group in an unplanned situation. Can true love and perhaps even Santa Claus find them? Will prayers be answered?
The author has once again written a book that requires thought and consideration on the part of the reader. A most lovely way to spend a number of hours!

This is a great novella to get you in the Christmas spirit! First of all, I was surprised to read a book by Wanda Brunstetter that was not Amish! Her transition into the historic world was seamless, and I found myself loving the story line as much as I love her Amish books. The story was so short that I devoured it in one sitting, and actually found myself longing for more! The characters were great, but I couldn’t help but think of how much more development there could have been from a full length novel. Perhaps we would have seen more interactions between all the characters, and more growth from them individually. But alas, that is just my readers heart wishing for more, as I do with many stories. The truth is, for a short length novella, this story was great.

I enjoyed Brunstetter’s choice of having multiple POV’s. It gave you a peek into how each family was faring with the difficult trip along the trail. I also enjoyed a little surprise twist at the end! Two of them actually. And while they almost felt sudden, mainly because this is a novella, I was completely satisfied with the outcome, and could reflect back on how it all happened. This was a sweet story, a story of following God’s lead, and making the best of a gloomy situation. I hope Ms. Brunstetter has more books like this for the future!

A small wagon train sets out for the West.
Walter, Cynthia Cooper, the woman he is to marry, and her mother are in one wagon. Jack Simpson, a widower, and his two children, Alan and Amelia are in another wagon. Cole, a single man, and his sister Virginia are in the third wagon. Walter is domineering but has agreed to marry Cynthia and care for her mother as well. Amelia has not spoken in 6 months since her mother's tragic death. Virginia has really helped with Jack's children.

The small wagon train had planned to meet up with the main wagon train. Follow the group as they try to reach California. Cynthia will give us a glimpse of their life on the rugged trail and then the snow starts to fall...lots of snow.

When I picked up this book the first thing I noticed was how small it was. Had I done even a smidgen of research I would have realized two things. First, this is actually a novella that is being re-released as a stand-alone book. Secondly, I would have realized that I’d read this story before, in a novella collection. Go figure, I mean come on me do research? Pulease! A favorite author releases a book and my first thought is ‘I gotta get my eyes on this one!’. That’s OK though, I mean after taking a much needed life hiatus from a lot of things (including blogging and reading) I’m jumping back in with almost both feet and something easy to read helps keep me from everything getting too much again. And Wanda is known for her easy to read, simpler storytelling style that is perfect for me right now.

That being said I found myself in the novella conundrum again. Getting a strong story in a short amount of space and words is hard. Even the best storytellers can fall flat in a novella setting. I had a smidge of this struggle with this novella but it wasn't’ too much and I didn’t feel like I lost an amazing story. Yes, there were parts that I wanted more depth, greater understand. However, those parts, while a yearning I had, did not take away from a well told story. My personal need for these was not something that would take away from the story for most readers. I would love to know more about how Cynthia and her mother became entangled with Walter. I mean, I got the basic logistics but I feel like there was so much more I would have loved to explored. I would love to know more depth about their journey west in the wagons as well as the interactions between the families, and more about how they truly felt about Walter. I want to know so much more about that Christmas conversation and how awkward it would have truly been when all the love entanglements were unraveled. I’m an emotional reader, and an emotional reviewer, and I needed more emotion that the average novella allows to develop.

At the end of the day I read a solid story of growth in self, growth in faith, and finding love. I read a story about hardships, and overcoming, and family. I read a story of how a group of people, thrown together by ambition and hardship, forged a family that doesn’t require a blood bond or legal documentation. Sometimes love does win, and it’s easier than you built it up to be in your head. While not a ‘Christmas’ story 'prayer' is the ultimate basis of this book. And for all my Christmas loving readers, this is a perfect book of faith and family and holiday blessings that will easily be a year round favorite and a must read during the holiday season.

Who would attempt a cross-country journey through the Sierra Nevada Mountains in December? These three wagons did and yes… they got stranded in a little cabin, crowded, tempers, cold and Christmas seems not so Christmasy! Interesting times and a surprise ending! A nice short story and the actual paperback book is so pretty.

Wagon trains were prone to problems, and this adventure was no different. Sometimes those challenging times help us see the true nature of others and ourselves.

Cynthia is obligated to care for her mother and is therefore determined to fulfill that responsibility. The men in their group represent two perspectives — controlling or cooperative. As a short story, there is not much room to develop their individual characters.

A Christmas Prayer is comparable to a written Hallmark Christmas movie, set on a wagon train trip. It’s a sweet, feel-good story without much depth. Sometimes that’s just what we need during the busy holiday season.

If you’re looking for a story to analyze or one that will make you think, this probably isn’t the story for you right now. But if you want to slip away from your busyness and enjoy a sweet Christmas tale, this might be just what you’re looking for!

Thanks to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing, Inc. for the read of Wanda E. Brunstetter’s, The Christmas Prayer.

I am a big fan of historical fiction, especially when the stories are sweet, romantic, exciting…and when courting meant courting.

Heading west on a wagon, facing the unknown hazards and dangers, Cynthia finds courage and determination, and a little adventure.

Reading this made my whole day.

Wonderful story and highly recommended.

This is a wonderful easy read. It is a historical fiction story that is well written and interesting. I love all the characters. Cynthia needs to learn to be assertive in her life. All the characters will learn lessons during their trip along the Oregon trail. I did not put this book down until I was done. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

It's Fall. It's time for all things Fall-y, Halloween-y and best of all? Christmas-y! So, when I saw that Ms. Brunstetter was releasing The Christmas Prayer, I jumped on the chance! I love a good novella that's filled with snow, history and best of all? Wanda Brunstetter's addictive characters. This book had it all and so much more, for such a small, quick read.

Sitting down to read this, we are taken to history, during the 1850's, and introduced to some amazing, fun loving characters. Each character has something different for the story, each of their journeys for a different reason, but with God, prayer and unforgettable messages, these characters make being snowed in, a fun treat!

Ms. Brunstetter is the type of author who can write 5 star books across the genre grid. From Amish fiction to historical romance, she can bring the reader to the heart of the story instantly, and keep them their til the very last page is turned. Once you're finished, you want more. She's that good. Ms. Brunstetter is my top author when it comes to historical and Amish romances. If you are looking for a 5 star, winter-y read to set the mood for Christmas this year, look no further than this amazing, soul moving novella! Well done, Ms. Brunstetter! Well done!

The Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a heartwarming tale that take you back to 1850. Cynthia Cooper, her mother Mabel, and Cynthia's fiancée Walter Prentice missed the wagon train they had originally intended to join in Missouri and are instead having to travel with two other families that are also headed to California. Jack Simpson is traveling with his two young children, Alan and Amelia, and Cole Edwards is traveling with his sister, Virginia.

Cynthia is with Mr. Prentice, a much older man, not because she loves him but because he will be able to financially care for her and her mother. In all actuality Mr. Prentice is stuffy, pretentious and almost unbearable to be around. He is of no help to any of the other men during their trying journey and Cynthia finds herself fighting feelings for another man in the group and wondering how she will ever be able to share a life with Mr. Prentice.

When the team reaches the Sierra Nevada mountains bad weather, along with even more wagon issues, lead Jack and Cole to search for shelter, and they soon find a little log cabin in the middle of nowhere. The group is forced to stay in the cabin for months while winter rages on outside and patience and hope begins to wear thin as it nears Christmas. It is this, along with their dire situation, that Cynthia sends up a prayer on Christmas, and the group does what they can to make Christmas as special for the children as possible.

As you read you fall in love with the characters, with the exception of Mr. Prentice, who quickly gets on your nerves. You find yourself rooting for Cynthia and hoping that she ends up with anyone else but Mr. Prentice, as well as a happy ending for everyone in the group.

Wanda Brunstetter has a wonderful, fluid writing style that is easy to read and you find yourself getting lost in the story. It takes no time at all to read and it leaves you with a sweet smile on your face. It's the perfect story to kick off the holiday season.

I encourage readers that have enjoyed Wanda’s stories in the past to read this book. I really love Wanda Brunstetter's Amish stories so when I saw this I had to request a review. Thanks to the publisher for allowing me to. I loved this tale. This is a story that begins in the harsh winter of 1850, where covered wagons were the way to travel long distances and the elements weren't something just to complain about. This also plays with the heartstrings as our main character must chose between several suitors all the while taking care of her aging mother. A sweet and wonderful tale for Christmas!!!

Wanda Brunstetter takes a break from her usual Amish fiction to give her readers a heartwarming historical novella. This story takes place in 1850 and follows a journey across country to California to get rich digging for gold. The larger wagon train leave a week earlier so this one has three wagons. The first occupied by Cole and his sister and Coke was chosen to lead the trail. The second one is a widow with his two small children. And the third one has who is known as Mr. Walter Fancy Pants (and you will find out why the name as you read the story), Cynthia Cooper and her mother. Each person on the trail different, in their own way. And each taking a part in helping along the trail, that is except Walter, who thought he was too good to help. This group started off pretty good but they were hit with obstacles along the way that slowed them down more than they expected. Will they ever get to California?

This is a very sweet and heartwarming story, though I wish it was longer. Ms. Brunstetter does her usual awesome job of creating excellent characters, each scene vividly explained, and an interesting plot that keeps you wanting to find out what is happening next. I really enjoyed this group of characters, that is except Walter. He got on my nerves so much I was hoping the others would kick him out and make him see how hard the others were working.

And I guess that is the main thing I didn’t enjoy about the book. Walter and his attitude. Why didn’t they force him? And well, you will know what I mean when you read the book. And I highly recommend this one to everyone. It’s cover is beautiful, the story is beautiful and it takes an hour or hour and a half at the most to read it. So pick up your copy today. You won’t be disappointed.

My Thoughts
Take a journey back in time as Wanda Brunstetters takes you back to the 1850's. I loved everything about this book. The first, was the way it was written and the pages that were made to looked like you were reading an older book. As simple as this story was written, it has such a powerful message. Hope. I really thought about the journey each character took and how much faith one would have to endure such a journey. To find hope when things are hopeless to question and wonder how are if we will ever make to the promise land. I encourage you to read this book and hope that you will be encouraged by the hope this book brings.

This is a quick, and sweet read about cross-country journey of six adults, two children and a lot of animals. Making such a long trip always means that there will be lots of dramas among the characters, chances of running low on supplies and basically struggling to reach "the promised land".

For some reason, I thought that this book had a contemporary setting. but I am always game for historical fiction. I enjoyed this non-Amish novella by Ms Brunstetter. As usual, the author smoothly shifts between Cynthia's journal entries, inner dialogues and actual conversations to move the plot along.

If you are looking for something to get you into the holiday mood, The Christmas Prayer will get there.

Wanda E. Brunstetter has written an intriguing tale set in the 1850's which is a fascinating time period for me. Wanda traditionally writes Amish fiction, so this book deviates from her normal genre. This is a romance and historical fiction with a bit of added adventure and danger.
I really enjoyed the book. The characters all tore at my heart and were quite likable except for Walter and Cynthia's mother. I won't reveal the reasons for my feelings towards the characters as they would spoil the story for readers. It is the mark of a good writer to draw the reader in and create an image that allows readers to develop strong emotions towards characters. I felt the ending was rather abrupt, but the book was definitely highly pleasurable.
I am rating this book 4 stars and highly recommend it to readers.

In 1850 three wagons set out to go from Independence, Missouri to California. They were late and missed the larger group, but agreed to go ahead with one of the men leading them. Its a difficult journey of course, with lots of disagreement, but they all learn more about each other along the way. Their group becomes stranded at Christmas and find ways that God definitely worked in their lives, changing them in ways they never expected. This is a quick read with good depth of characters brought to life by this wonderful author.

The author of today's book, The Christmas Prayer, is Wanda E. Brunstetter. I know I've shared this story probably too many times, but back in 2015 I met Ms. Brunstetter while she was doing a book signing event at the local Wal-Mart here in Sarasota, Florida. At that time, I was able to get my mother, Gloria an autographed copy of one of her favorite Amish books. Of course, ever since that meeting in 2015 when the opportunity arises to read and review one of Ms. Brunstetter's books, I jump on it because my mother LOVES Amish stories.

Unfortunately for me, my mom recently had eye surgery and it isn't healing as quickly as she had hoped. What that means to me is that I don't have my Amish book reader/reviewer to help out when I have too many books in my TBR stack. Fortunately, I saw my Christmas deadline right around the corner, so I took care of this book right away!

The time period set out for The Christmas Prayer is April of 1850. Three covered wagons set out from Independence, Missouri headed for California. This group of folks were traveling together because they missed a wagon train they were supposed to connect with in Independence, but had arrived too late. They leave anyway on their own, hoping to arrive in California before winter. The group consisted of a brother, a sister, a widower and his two children, and a mother and daughter with the daughter's fiancé .

The trip turns out to be very hard and the group fell behind schedule. They only traveled half the distance to California before winter set in and things just didn't look good for the group. Their food supplies were dwindling, and they faced the possibility of freezing to death with only their covered wagons to help protect them.

There are several different point of view shared in this story and they are seamlessly put together. This was a great wagon trail Christmas story with a perfect ending. If you are expecting an Amish story because you see Wanda's name on the cover, here's a spolier alert: this book is not Amish.

This is a lovely seasonal story to get you in the mood. If you like stories about the settlers who crossed our country in covered wagon, you will enjoy the exploits of this small group of people: a fiancee, his bride to be and her mother, a bother and sister, and a recently widowed father with his two small children.

Most of the story is told through the diary of Cynthia Cooper who has promised herself to a man so that her mother and she will be taken care of once they reached California; but it soon becomes obvious that this is not a man she might want to spend the rest of her life with. On the trail, he seldom pitches in to help the other men with hunting food and hard labor. He complains a lot and has no patience for the children.

In the meantime, the other men are more her age, kind hearted and hard working men. Each has their own set of difficulties and concerns.

A quick and enjoyable read. Thanks to Barbour Publishing for allowing to read this book through Netgalley.

Surprisingly enough, The Christmas Prayer is my first historical novel of Wanda E. Brunstetter. As Christmas is upon us, this came at the perfect time to cuddle with a comfy blanket and read.
As The Christmas Prayer is a novella, it's a great size for a quick read! What a sweet story of the unexpected and finding strength in prayer.

Wagon train, winter storm, a cabin in the woods for shelter, Christmas approaching, an intended marriage, how will this Christmas bring our characters the shelter and peace in their hearts they each sought? Engaging as it is filled with an easy read storyline with a bit of a mystery, I do find due to its size, I'd close the story wishing for more. There will be complete closure for our characters and readers in terms of storyline. However, because it caught my attention from the start, I wish the characters were further developed, and in some areas, increase the complexity factor. And since it is a novella, it does work nonetheless.

I must say the message of seeking God's plan and one's heart, discerning it all ties it together flawlessly. In all, The Christmas Prayer speaks to our hearts through a story, and with the pretty pages too, it'll make a great gift any time of the year.

Wanda Brunstetter is one of my favorite authors. I was excited to read this book. It was a quick and easy read. I was very sad when it was all over. A Christmas Prayer is a historical novel that takes us on a cross-country journey back in 1850 with three wagons headed to California. Each has their own story to tell. Each are so brave to go into the unknown. This is not your typical Wanda story. It is full of adventure, danger and so much more. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

This is a wonderful historical Christmas story.

The character list is very small in this book but they are each presented very well. Their personalities are extremely varied and as the story progresses we find that even the hardest to get along with can be the person that connects the most with someone.

The tale takes this small group through a very trying journey and they have to learn how to work together and trust in God. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how a group of strangers can become close friends going through a very difficult trial together.

Yes it is not even October and I’m reading The Christmas Prayer by Wanda E. Brunsetter. Boy did Brunsetter not disappoint. I never rush through fall as it is truly my most favorite season, but when given the chance to read this story I couldn’t resist “getting in the spirit” just a bit early this year. Yes, I am reading it right next to a pumpkin spice candle, a beautiful bouquet of dahlias and some lovely gourds from a friend’s yard. I just couldn’t rush it too much. The story itself was immediately engaging, an easy read, and left me wanting more. I love the format of the diary of Cynthia Cooper coupled with the first person storytelling of what is happening on the journey. As an introduction to a full wagon train of characters, Brunstetter was also able to give us a deeper peek into a number of the characters and the dynamics between them.

I literally read the book in two sittings. It is a novella so it’s brief 170 pages goes quickly. This might be my only “complaint” with the book. The novella setting is a great place for a quick story but leaves readers like me wishing for more with no promise of that. I love a deep and complex story and while this one has some of that potential the format itself doesn’t lend itself to delving into the intricacies that Brunstetter often creates in her characters. However, a brief and engaging story, with an interesting setting and entertaining storyline is exactly what I needed in a busy season. I encourage you to take a look at the recipe below, and the guest post from the author.
