Description

Sharky Malarkey follows the adventures of Bruce, a washed-up shark actor, and a colorful assortment of dysfunctional people, animals, and inanimate objects.

Bruce is equally outlandish and relatable—he’s vain but insecure; hotheaded but cowardly; craves attention but fears intimacy—his over-the-top antics are all too human. Based on Megan Nicole Dong’s popular webcomic, Sketchshark, her debut print collection mines the absurd in everyday life.

I wish I had known about Megan Nicole Dong and webcomic earlier. It seems like whether she is drawing an overdramatic, attention hogging shark or a battery of people and animals alike dealing with insecurities or exploring the most ludicrous premises, her incredible flair for for the wonderfully absurd (plus her incredibly charming art) will always successfully ensure a laugh or at least a big goofy smile from readers every time, without fail. This collection is the kind of book that is perfect for whenever a ridiculous pick-me-up is needed.

Review to be posted everywhere in September.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I was so delighted when, a week or so ago, Megan twittered about her brand-new book. I couldn't wait to pre-order it and then read it. Now I don't need to wait as long as Netgalley had the book and it was a read-now. Squee.

This book contains Megan's comics and illustrations in all its glorious weirdness and hilariousness. Really, you will laugh your butt off. It is not, as the blurb may say, only about Bruce the shark. Yes, there are parts with him, but really this is much much more. It contains a lot of Megan's comics, most (if not all) I already knew from following her on Twitter, there is a story about a toad (or is it a frog? :P), it is about Megan herself.

My favourites would be the normal comics about all sorts of hilarious stuff. And really, all sorts of weird stuff will pop up. Sexy butts, boobs in various yoga-ish poses (or used as pillows), cats, birds.

Bruce is just a tad bit annoying at times with his ego (then again I guess he is supposed to be like that). But I still had fun reading them as Bruce adventures are quite fabulous!

I even shared a few of them with my boyfriend as he could use some laughter in his life these days, and I wonder how hard he had to hold his laughter as he was at work (I was whatsapping him with a shot of the page I loved).

Megan's art is just the best. I also love the colours she uses in her works.

And I am just too happy that I can now have Megan's art without having to check her twitter. Now whenever I have a bad day I can just grab this book (as yes, I am buying it) and laugh my butt off.

All in all, very highly recommended. Sharks, butts, boobs, birds, and so much more. You won't be disappointed. The best book to read when you have a day where you need tons of laughs.

Hands Down the funniest thing I have read in a while! This is the perfect feel good comic book that will have you laughing out loud to. Fans of Cyanide and Happiness, or The Worrier's Guide to Life will simply love this. I found most comic strips to be instantly relatable, and they honestly just made me smile. I NEED to own a copy of this book. I could read it over and over again.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I truly appreciate it!

What a fun comic. I was laughing, especially at the shy boys and the shark. The artwork is simple but it's great.

Oh. My. God. This collection, based on the webcomic, WAS SO GOOD. Holy shit, man. The title and cover had me pulled in immediately and I was hooked from page 1. I laughed out loud throughout, and my 13-year-old brother even loved it. I’ve been telling all my friends about how hilarious it is, and I can’t stop gushing!
The art is beautiful and silly, the humour is slightly political and hard-hitting, but done in a really classy way. I loved how real it was, while still being about an actor shark. I cannot wait to see what’s coming next from Megan Dong; whatever it is, I want to read it.
Sharky Malarkey comes out September 18th, 2018, and I highly recommend you preorder or pick up a copy.

This collection of comics is fun and quirky, and you never quite know what is coming on the next page. Overall, a fun and enjoyable read.

A book cover with a shark on it always catches my eye. I couldn't wait to see what the shark was up to but it turned out it was a book about all sorts of topics and not so much about sharks. Nevertheless, the illustrations were good and there were some stories I liked. A few times I laughed out loud. Overall a good book and quick read that makes you laugh about things life throws your way told through some interesting characters.

Thanks to NetGalley and Megan Nicole Dong and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a free electronic ARC of this book.

This book is a fantastic encapsulation of modern life, by turns roll-on-the-floor hilarious and deeply cringey. Overall, a strong recommendation for people who enjoy slice-of-life comics and internet humor.

It was a hilarious book. Some of the comics were relatable and the others were really quirky (which I loved). The interview with Jaws' star Bruce was great too.

Such an awesome read. I spent one hour reading this literally laughing out loud and continuously sharing with my sister.

Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read this hilarious comic!

I don't tend to read a lot of comics like this and I have no idea why because every time I do I end up loving them! This one definitely reminded me of "Sarah's Scribbles" and "Hyperbole and a half" which are some of my favourites, so if you liked them I would recommend this one!

This was hilarious, laugh out loud funny. The drawings are amazing and the subject matter manages to combine real-life, honest situations with completely bonkers, over the top ones (in a good way).

The only issue I had with this is that the cover and description don't really match up to what the story is actually about. The cover and blurb make the book look as though it follows Bruce the Shark throughout, but that's not the case. There is a weird and wonderful assortment of characters included in this book and it's a shame they aren't included on the cover too!

Overall, I loved this and it's a definite recommendation from me!

This book made me laugh aloud in an airplane. I had to stop reading it because it was late, people were sleeping, and I was guffawing. I picked it up again at my neighbor’s house and interrupted everyone by sharing the hilarious panels. I loved it!

I received a free ebook version of this book through NetGalley.

Have you ever wondered if other people have thoughts as weird as your own? This little graphic story reinforced for me that there are definitely others on my level of weird. I didn’t find the “story” terribly cohesive or unique, but I definitely enjoyed reading this one. There were a few pages that had me laughing out loud. A fun, quick read.

I have so many questions and none of them make sense. This is, hands down, the strangest thing that has happened to me this year. And it's been a strange year, folks.

An eclectic mix of characters and themes and some really, really strange stuff keeps this fresh for the duration of the book, which sometimes seems to be a problem for this type of graphic novel (Think Sarah's Scribbles, Hyperbole and a Half) - but there was definitely not enough shark. I went in thinking it would be mostly Bruce the shark, but there is not enough shark. The weird makes up for it though. Just about.

I follow Megan Dong on IG and her illustrations/commentary always light up my feed.

I giggled and snorted through every panel of "men being fooled by makeup".

I root for Kevin to make it in Hollywood.

I read and re-read the simple boxes of illustration, which is as good as it can get with a comic. Were these in print in the paper, my fridge would be littered with every other day's strip cut and taped up.

More Malarky!

I kind of thought this was mainly going to be shark comics? Or possibly hold some type of story format but it was pretty much an explosion of random assorted short comics/scribbles/thoughts which let me say surprisingly worked for me. It took a second for me to adjust because it was a lot at first but they were all so quirky and out there that I deeply enjoyed them. You get to kind of go somewhere else for a while and totally dissolve into the book - and Megan Nicole Dong is extremely relatable in an almost eerie way. She definitely gets it. while still maintaining her own identity strongly.

Needless to say, cute little book of comics!

I laughed, I cried... Just kidding, I only laughed. While reading this comic, I had the urge to send every single page to one or two close friends. I may or may not be buying this in the future as a gift for someone.

A fun assortment of comics by Megan, a.k.a. sketchshark! The comics and illustrations are just so much fun and very lively. There's a lot of social commentary and poking fun at real life situations, and I love the comics about Chaos, her cat. A definite read for any comic fan.

This was fun and adorable. I have been unfamiliar with this comic but I am glad that this was my introduction to it. I thought the comics were quite fun and clever. I adore the talk about anxiety and the colors that were used were amazing. Sure, it has some dumb humor, but it was refreshing. It didn’t try too hard to be funny or refreshing, it just was. I will be following more work from this comic artist in the future!

The illustrations are colorful and weird, just like the premise of many of these comics. I personally appreciate the authors love of butts. Dong is a delightfully weird author and after this book is finished I wanted more. Laugh out loud funny and weird.

This graphic novel features a series of adventures of various characters.
The art style is simple and rough but, still, strangely appealing.
The characters and their stories were relatable and funny, at times.
It was not the best humorous graphic novel I’ve read but it was still enjoyable.

Thank you, NetGalley for the preview of this graphic novel.

This was one of the weirdest comic I have ever read. It was so hilarious and even absurd at moments that you cannot stop reading it until you have reached the last page. WIll definitely check out other works of this artist. Kudos to her.

Good, fun, and cute. Also a little weird at times, but that's the point ha ha! I enjoyed this book. Entertaining to say the least.
