Description

Fired from his job at an Indian casino and armed with a dolphin amulet gifted to him by his Noqoto grandfather, student archaeologist Peter Martinez is on a mission to save Rocky Point, California from an oil giant's development plans. But when his exploration of the sacred coastal land leads him to an ancient burial cave in the side of a cliff, a wave knocks him into the water and he wakes up on the beach—more than 300 years in the past. His Noqoto ancestors have occupied this shore for thousands of years, but in 1786 their experiences with the Spanish have left them wary of strangers. That this outsider who walks into their village and knows so little of their world hints at their destiny is alarming. But when the village leader's son leads Peter into the wilderness to test his character and resolve, the skills taught to Peter by his grandfather wins over the tribe and they begin to listen to his words of warning. Is there anything they can do to prevent the future Peter says is coming? Or can they use his knowledge to save themselves?

Advance Praise

“Larry Prosor’s ‘Dream Walker’ is an inspirational novel, cleverly tying a modern environmentally conscious worldview to an ancient story of Spanish colonization and forced religious conversion. Prosor breathes life into the story through Peter Martinez, laidback surfer, archaelogy student and failed Wooden Indian. His vivid surfing descriptions and wise-cracking musings on the failings of modern culture draw us into his world and give and honest, ethical voice that is instantly likeable. The picture Prosor paints of Native American life in coastal California is detailed and intriguing and the sudden addition of a ‘freaked out’ surfer alongside Spanish missionaries and military is dramatic and at times hilarious. Prosor crafts these disparate elements into a cohesive, fast-paced story, but it is his ability to bring relationships to life, the way he finds the heart of the story that ultimately sets ‘Dream Walker’ apart. I thoroughly recommend it.”--Vince Ford

“Being a 4th generation Californian of European decent, Dream Walker is the story that I always wanted to hear but was never told in school. Rich in Native American roots and history, this tale weaves together spirituality, sacred love and respect for the ocean. Brillant and powerful storytelling.”--Shannon Royster

“Dream Walker vibrates with ancient and modern wisdom as the struggles of the past merge with the struggles of the present day conflict between environmentalists and a multinational oil company. As if ripped from today’s headlines, Dream Walker takes a stand in favor of those who recongnize both the ancient and modern world’s desire to live in harmony with nature and to leave the earth in better shape than we found it. In presenting this struggle in compelling and dramatic fashion, Prosor succeeds in making Dream Wallker a thoroughly enjoyable read.”  --David R. Kracke
