Growing up in New England, I learned early that one can never have too many hats; you need differently colored/styles ones to go with various outfits, etc. This book is great because it offers a variety of styles, as well as a variety of skill levels.

My favorite part, though, was that the author included hats/samples knit in yarns that can be found not only in specialty yarn stores, but also in a variety of big box stores (there's a few Lionbrand hats and a few Loops and Threads). It's rare to find a book with a healthy mix of the two and this makes the book accessible to a larger audience.

Don't get scared off by the super bulky yarn on the cover. The hats' suggested yarn weights are varied throughout the book.

I received a free copy of Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods (30 Engaging Designs for Beanies, Tams, Slouches, and More) by Diane Serviss in exchange for an honest review. As the title suggests, this book contains patterns for a variety of hat styles. The patterns range from the quirky to the classic. Though most of the patterns are for bulky and worsted weight yarns, there is one pattern that calls for DK. There is a hidden gem in the back of the book. It has step-by-step photo tutorials on the techniques used in the book. Overall, this would be an excellent resource for beginning knitters just beginning to learn about knitting hats or experienced knitters in search of really quick projects.

I was super excited to receive and advanced preview of Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods by Diane Serviss. Needles and yard are ready!!! While all the hats are amazing I especially like the cabled knit on the cover. Patterns look perfectly detailed with illustrations at the back if you get stuck.

This is a very well explained knitting book. Has a great variety of hats. Written instructions and charts are included . There is texture, colorwork, and Cables. Something for everyone.. One thing that is really throughout is the glossary with pictures plus names of the hats so you can easily find what you want, also the techniques x]can be found too.

Great ideas and patterns for knitters. I loved the different styles and the step-by-step instructions with pictures.

This book has a bunch of wonderful hat patterns in all different styles. I gravitated mostly to the beanies, but there are also patterns for hoods, tams, berets, grownup bonnets and more. The Pine Hill Drive Beret is a gorgeous fair isle design that really stands out. Many knitting techniques and fancy stitches are used, such as color work, cables and lace. While some of the hats were a bit too whimsical for my taste, the majority were stylish and I could see myself knitting and wearing them. There is also a great technique section at the back of the work with lots of photo tutorials for the different stitches used in the book. I would recommend this book to knitters who like to make hats and who want to try some new techniques.

I received an ARC of this book to read from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods by Diane Serviss is a book I look forward to adding to my collection. There are 30 beautifully designed hats and hoods for all ages, from glamorous to whimsical, stylishly warm hats any one would be delighted to wear. The photographs by Gale Zucker are gorgeous, and what I really like is that many of the patterns explore techniques that some may not have done before and these hats and hoods provide the perfect vehicle to learn the new techniques. The patterns are well written with clear and concise instructions and the back section of the book has one of the best set of instructions for the Kitchener stitch that I have seen... Kitchener Stitch being one of my bugaboos ... I hate it but I happened to have to finish off a sock at the time I was evaluating this book and was quite happy that I now think I’ve mastered it. This is a great set of hat patterns that includes simple enough for beginners and ones that will force knitters to conquer a new skill. Even better is the lack of specific yarn for each project. This could be a great stash buster for all my fellow yarn hoarders out there.

I love just enough of the patterns in this book to make it a 5 star knitting book. I don't expect to like all the patterns you find in craft books, but I at least want to like a quarter or third of them. This book is actually worth it for one pattern alone--the Latvian Lamprey hat. OMG! This is a gorgeous hat! I've started making it using multiple strands of worsted to equal the bulky. I also had to go adjust my needle size.

Anyhow, in addition to the patterns there are also great photographs. And not the same picture over and over, either, but different, thoughtful pictures of the projects from different angles.

I have to admit I'm not wild about the craze for slouchy knitted hats, but I actually liked a few in this book. If you love the slouchy style this book is a must.

The directions seem direct and are nicely laid out (if you are a knitter you know what I mean)

Beautiful patterns and great instructions!

So many patterns for really cool hats and great instructions. I found several patterns that I want to try and appreciate the photos of models wearing each hat in the book. This book is a must have in public libraries.

Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods is an attractive coffee table book and a fun resource for those interested in knitting hats and hoods. There are lots of cute options. Bonus: there is a visual index, so that you can quickly look over the options to find something to make without needing to match the visual to the name of the item.

Disclaimer: I am new to knitting, so this review comes from a relative newbie. For those who are newer to knitting or who need a reminder about how to do certain stitches, there is a visual stitch dictionary that uses photographs to show various stitches. This looks like a really great resource.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Rowman & Littlefield for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of this book.

A great variety of patterns that all look astounding. Most are difficult and need some skill to pull off, but if you can put in the time to learn cables or how to carefully count and follow directions well you will be rewarded. This book may scare away beginners, or provide something to aspire to, but the target audience is definately the confident, established knitter. The patterns are great, 90 % of which I would wear personally, and 40% of which i feel I could accurately knit. A great book to be inspired by.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC in return for my unbiased review. This book does have some inventive patterns for hoods, berets, hats, and cowls. There isn’t a lot of duplication here! I really liked three of the patterns, which I plan to make: the marigold slouchy hat, Pine Hill beret (color work!) and Moorland Heather beanie. A few of the others were memorable and hip as well- but there were a bunch that were not at all my cup of tea. A few had strange shapes, and then I’m not sure I can rock a fairy tale bonnet. But if you’re searching for solidly-written patterns for unique hat shapes, this is the book for you!

I have been knitting for twenty years. Rarely have I wanted to knit every single pattern in a knitting book, but Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods is one of those specials books. It went on my Amazon list immediately. This is a book that I will use often to make hats for everyone in my extended family and for charity. Diane Serviss is an amazing designer.

Several trendy pattern options, beautiful color pictures, lots of style varieties using different yarn weights, colors, and types. I’ve already tagged some pages and I’m going to whip some of these up for gifts. Thanks, NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

"Knockout Knit Hats & Hoods" is a fun collection of assorted head coverings - from beanies and berets to more whimsical hoods and a bit of everything in between. Simple stockinette - cables - colorwork - lace - this pattern provides a variety of flavors of knit styles as well as a variety of yarn weights used throughout. This book isn't just for those in colder climates - several hats have a lighter look/drape and could be worn in any climate. Several of these patterns look like fun ways to use up some solo skeins in my stash. Focusing so many pattern names on the color of the yarn that was used doesn't add to the pattern and could hinder some people from making the connection that a good pattern + your preferred yarn = a great hat...you don't have to go with the exact yarn/color as written. Overall, I see several patterns being added to my Ravelry queue.

I love these hats! I asked for this book just for the cover hat but now I want to make them all!
The instructions are simple to follow and I love that we get more than one picture of each hat so we see it close up and on a model!
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley which is where I got my e-book to read and review. This has been my own personal opinion after having read the above mentioned book.

Not only are there a variety of styles of hats but they are made in a variety of yarns and weights used too. From box store brands like Lion Brand and Loops and Threads to Local yarn shop favourites like Berroco and Malabrigo.

Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods is a delightful collection of unique patterns. They vary from the whimsical to the stylish including a Mama Bear hood and a Honeycomb split beanie. One of the best aspects of this book is the variety of techniques in the patterns ranging from short rows to brioche to beading. The author includes a helpful guide in the back of the book explaining them. Many of the patterns can be completed in one day.

Very neat collection of knit patterns. A few of them were similar to other patterns I have seen but had unique elements and the majority of them were patterns that were completely new to me! That doesn't happen often! I am definitely going to be adding some of these to my Christmas knitting list!

Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods is a fresh, contemporary collection of beanies, hoods, slouchy hats plus a few berets, knitted in worsted to bulky weight yarns. There are styles that can be knitted by beginning knitters progressing to intermediate. The author has a variety of techniques represented, from simple garter stitch progressing to knit/purl stitch pattern, simple lace, cables and 2 color Fair Isle knitting. Close fitting beanies are offered in two or three sizes, a feature not usually seen in hats. As a bonus, there is an appendix at the back of the book with tutorials for the major stitches and techniques used through the book, including one for the dreaded Kitchner Stitch that is just about the best I have seen. Most of the samples are shown knitted in moderate priced yarns,

Thank you to Net Galley for providing a copy of this book for review.

Excellent book on hats to knit. Despite the rather spectacular hat on the cover, this book offers do-able patterns that most people would actually wear. Patterns are particularly on trend for young adults and teens. Many patterns actually incorporate yarn available in big box stores for the average knitter. Helpful information in the back for reference. Helpful for making hats for holiday gift-giving.

This is an excellent collection of patterns for hats and hoods, with a variety of styles, stitches and yarns. This book is suitable for knitters of any experience, with patterns for beginners as well as advanced skills. There are suitable photos for each pattern as well as for examples in the back of the book, along with clear pattern instructions.

I love to knit for family, friends, and for charity. I love knitting hats and this is just the book I’ve needed for terrific new ideas and new techniques. Ms. Serviss’ creations are beautifully photographed. The pattern directions are clear and easy to follow, as are the instructional pictures at the end of the book. I also really like that so many of the suggested yarns are commercial brands, easy to buy and affordable.

4 1/2 stars

Of all the gifts I've knitted, hats are the most welcome and requested so I was very pleased to be given the opportunity to read and review Diane Serviss' Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods.
The patterns in Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods are very appealing and accessible, and as I was reading through the patterns, I found myself itching to get at least two of the beanies on the needles immediately.
A variety of yarn weights are used, from dk, worsted, and bulky, which means that if you're planning on gifting a hat, you can probably knit one of these in no time. However, if you have a favorite skein of indie hand-dyed sock yarn, you'll have to look elsewhere.

My one disappointment is that none of these looked like a true unisex hat. The ones pointed out as unisex might just be a little too fussy for the guys I normally knit for, but frankly, there are lots of unfussy hat patterns out there so that really isn't a deciding factor on whether you should add this book to your pattern library or not.

A great addition is the fact that there is a picture tutorial at the end that walks the knitter through a couple of different cast-on methods as well as some of the stitches incorporated in the patterns making this so excellent for the beginning knitter.

I have a feeling at least one of the hoods knit with bulky yarn as well as a beanie will be added to my queue very soon. I love the idea of the hood, that covers the head as well as the neck, and will be so welcome in January when Scout needs to be walked. The hood also has the option of having ears so that might just make the day for you or a little one.

Hats, hats, hats! Woot!

Really beautiful patterns and the instructions are thorough. Looking forward to making a few things this winter - great for making gifts or to fill up your etsy shop with unique items..

This book contains 29 hats for women and one child-size pattern for a matching Mama Bear/ Baby Bear look. Each hat is presented with clear photos showing the hats being worn by a nicely diverse group of young women.

There are many different shapes of hats, from traditional tams and beanies to hat/cowl combinations, slouchy hats, cloches, and a newsy flat cap. The hats also have special touches, including color work, beading, and a wide range of stitch patterns. Some are quite unusual and original. There will doubtless be a pattern to suit you and all the women on your gift list.

The directions are traditional and clear.

I'd say that each of these hats is accessible for a beginning knitter. I was sorry there were no patterns for men, but apart from that, this seems like a very complete compendium of hat patterns. I expect to use this book a lot.

A good book for someone looking to get into hat knitting or expand their hat pattern collection. The variety and complexity of the patterns is good for all levels.

This book is full of a treasure of wonderful patterns for knit hats and hoods for any and everyone. When there are 6 hats I want right NOW, you know the designer did an incredible job in creating unique, and versatile patterns. There are patterns for both beginners and advanced knitters. The author has included great advice on choosing the tools and materials for each project as well as good instructions on stitches beyond the average ones most of us know. I highly recommend this book. It offers hours of pleasure in creating the patterns included and the joy of giving and wearing them!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book is full of fun hats that will make your knitting fingers itchy for a colder season. It has some wonderful traditional and funky hats that you will want to make and wear. The various pointed elf like hats are my favorite, but I think my first project will be the Hyacinth Bow Beret. The instructions are easy to follow and the book is well laid out. I love that they left the knitting help and hints to the back of the book and let the patterns lead the reader. This is a great book for any personal or library collection.

DISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL CONNECTION: I have a material connection because I received a review copy for free from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Knitters – grab your needles! Diane Serviss has created a collection of knit hats and hood patterns that will make you race to your stash or local yarn shop. There are patterns for every style, each with explicit, easy to read instructions that novice knitters as well as seasoned veterans of the craft can enjoy.

Her introduction, How to Use This Book is straightforward and easy to comprehend no matter what your level of knitting is. She explains how to make changes in needle size to accommodate different knitter’s gauge as well as the different types of needles available and how each is used differently.  Yarn substitution guides will help when you are using stash yarn - which is the yarn that all knitters have in the house from other projects as well as some perfect yarn we had to buy but haven’t used yet.

The pictures of each of the 30 hats and hoods are featured before the patterns. When you choose a pattern, if there are special stitches involved, detailed instructions are included. For example, the Red Vine Cable Beanie (on my list to make) includes Right twist (RT) with a paragraph of instructions on the stitch if you are unfamiliar with it. Additionally, there is a reference section at the end of the book with pictures and step-by-step instructions from casting on to binding off and everything in between.

I chose to knit the Wildflower Fields Beanie. Using some stash yarn I completed it in less than two days. It was fast, easy and turned out perfect. As a member of the Fox Valley Knitting Guild, I participate in Charity Challenges each month. October we are knitting hats and scarves for the Elgin Community Crisis Center ( www.crisiscenter.org), so I was excited to find this beautiful, quick pattern to knit up and donate. I hope to finish a few more before our next meeting.

Whatever your style is, you will find the perfect pattern in this book. It is available on October 1, 2018, just in time to begin holiday knitting. I know more than one of these beautiful hats will find its way under our Christmas tree this year.

Once autumn hits, I believe 2 things happen with knitters...they want cozy things to knit & they begin to panic about the holidays. This book is a solution for both! The hats in this book are beautiful and there is something for everyone on your holiday list. And the book also has pictures along with the descriptions of how to work the stitches. Which is very helpful. I will be casting on some of these hats very soon.

So many hats it’s hard to pick a favorite so I’ll just have to knit lots of them. Colorful how too’s at the end not cartoons. This is a very nice book for anyone who wants to knit some hats. I highly recommend this book and thank you Net Gallery for the free book!!!

I always look at knitting books skeptically because alot of times the pictures and patterns are more for art and fashion than for real people. I looked thru it a few times before deciding on what one I might want to make. As always, with any knitting pattern, I usually change what yarn to use(like what's in my stash) but not the weight. Very interesting book.

I wasn't familiar with the author's work and was about to blow this book off as yet another book of hat patterns too cutesy or goofy to be bothered with. Wow, was I wrong! There are cute hats but they're everyday, totally wearable cute. There's even a hood that's exactly what I've been wanting to make for years.

The hats are all made with worsted or bulky yarn so they'll work up quick and cozy. Yarn requirements are clear which makes substitution and customization easy. All special stitches are explained before the pattern. Each pattern takes up two pages or less with one three page exception. There are a few charts but everything is written out as well. The photos are bright and show how the hats look when worn and different angles. There's a visual index at the back that shows all the hats.

Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods arrives just in time for cooler weather. Between the weight of the yarns and the easy of construction, there's plenty of time to knock a few out to enjoy during the winter.

I absolutely loved everything about this new book ! Though I am just a novice knitter , I found tons patterns that are going to be turning into beautiful hats come snow falling time ! The author of this book did something no other artscraft author has done before , ( trust me I would know because I own over 2,000 knitting/crochet books ) and that is to have each and every pattern be so absolutely original and different from the other . I truly wanted to get started on a project within minutes of opening the book .My favorites are the Moma and Baby Bear Hooded Cowl , Ombre Marled Pixie Hat and these last two are so HOT THIS SEASON Conch and Wedge Berets .
I can't wait to get clicking !

Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods is a new knitting inspiration and pattern book of headwear by Diane Serviss. Released 1st October 2018 by Rowman & Littlefield, it's 144 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.

The designs range from truly whimsical (see cover) to more standard fare (toques, caps, slouchy hats, etc). Each of the 30 included designs follows the same format. The introduction includes a general materials description of the required yarns along with specific model instructions and measurements. The directions are clear and understandable. I really liked that each of the projects is pictured several times from different angles! This is such a cool feature and one that other pattern books would do well to follow. Also (hallelujah!) the yarns for these projects runs the gamut from super chunky to worsted weight. The projects range in difficulty from beginner to moderately experienced; something for everyone. All of the hats seem to be sized for adults though there is one matching project sized for children.

There are many lovely projects included and at my quick search they didn't appear to be available elsewhere (ravelry, etsy, etc).

The photography is lovely and full color. The book is well edited and appealing. Just a good job all around.

Four solid stars.

I have been knitting over 15 years and I love finding new books and this one I truly think is my favorite Hat book. My mom wants me to knit her a hat for Christmas and the one I want to make is in this book. The patterns are written very well, the illustrations are very well done and I can't wait to finish my mom's hat so I can make daughters and I some hats from here too. I would recommend this book to all knitters.

In this new collection, the author includes 30 different knitting patterns for hoods, beanies, slouches, and tams incorporating a variety of colorwork, texture, pom-poms, and cables.

Most patterns are sized for the average female head, but there are a couple that also have other sizes available. Including a very cue child hat with it’s adult version as well. This is the Mama bear and baby bear hooded cowl set, and is just an adorable project for super bulky yarn.

The great variety of knitting patterns includes a collection of modern knits, classic knits, and even fantasy inspired knits like a cute pixie hat.

Most patterns included in this book use worsted, bulky, and super-bulky weight yarn, making them super quick projects.

This book is divided in 3 sections: Introduction and how to use this book instructions, all the individual patterns, and finally a tutorial section is included. The book also provides an index of stitches used, so you can easily find the page where the tutorial for the used stitches is located.
Besides all listed, the book also includes a photo index with all 30 patterns, with each name and of course page listed.
I really love this feature, as it will make browsing for a pattern to knit quite easy, and you search can be contained in 3 pages, instead of flipping for every single page of the patterns too find what your next project will be.

The book presents a beautiful layout that makes following the patterns easy and enjoyable.

Instructions for patterns always include:

Finished measurements
Yarn information
Needles and other notions needed
Gauge/tension
A stitch pattern repeat if applicable
And, some patterns also include charts for special stitches and color-work. (but not all of them)

Overall is a great book for any knitter that likes to knit hats and wants to have a variety of designs readily available.

Is important to notice that not all designs will be to everyone taste, as they are so wide in style. But I think it just adds a great collection so we knitters can knit what we love, and also for other people that might not love the same style as we do.

A very nice selection of hats and hoods for the experienced or beginner knitter. Beautiful yarn colors make these hats appealing, or you can choose your own colors! Good charting.

One of the many crafts I love is knitting, and some of my absolute favorite projects are hats. Why hats?

1) They work up quickly!
2) They don’t take more than a skein or two, so they are budget-friendly, and a great way to use up leftover yarn from a previous project (or yarn you didn’t get enough of for a different project!)
3) I live in Maine, where winter hats come in handy for at least half of the year!
4) I’m stylistically challenged and don’t care for jewelry, but a cute hat can add a little flair to a plain outfit (my mainstay!)
5) Hats are my answer to bad hair days (or bedhead on days when I don’t have time for a shower before running the kids to school)

However, at some point, it feels like every hat pattern is a variation on the same theme. Not so with Knockout Knit Hats and Hoods! While it does have some classic patterns (the Wedge Beret and Pine Tree Hill Beret come to mind), it also has some whimsical patterns, like the Wood Nymph Hat and the Braided Cable Hood (displayed on the cover, it is the singular reason I requested this book to begin with!), as well as some funky, some cute. With 30 patterns in total, it really does have something for everyone.

In terms of skill level, I probably fall somewhere in the intermediate range, and I’d feel comfortable making all the patterns included. There are plenty for the beginner, and then some that would be a great stretch for those looking to move into intermediate techniques.

Some of my favorite features of this book:

• They are all written to be knit in the round (my preference)
• They call for circular needles (also my preference) until the end (then it’s small double point needles for the finish)
• In the beginning, the author talks about the importance of gauge, needle size, etc. as well as the best ways to make adjustments to suit your project
• For each project, instructions are written out and provided in chart form
• Visual and written instructions for each stitch, cast on and embellishment used throughout the book. The images are actual pictures in color.
• At the end is a visual index of all the projects
• Pictures, pictures, pictures! As a visual learner, good pictures are truly appreciated.

Overall, this book was a win for me. There is a little something for every taste and every skill level, and the author provides all of the necessary instruction and information in a very effective manner, including visuals, which I consider critical. Plus, the projects are beautiful and creative. What more could a knitter ask for?

This book was formatted very nicely for my Kindle. The pictures are beautiful even on an eInk Kindle, the index works and there is none of the weird page breaks so common with knitting ebooks. the only problem I spotted was one color work pattern that just had numbers where the charts should have been. Another consideration is that only 8 of the 30 patterns call for worsted weight yarn which is what people of limited incomes or access to yarn stores are most likely to have. The rest are mostly bulky weight which is more expensive and harder to come by. I haven't had a chance to knit up any of the patterns but they seem well written.

A great step-by-step guide for anyone looking for a book on how to knit Hats and Hoods. I don't know if I would recommend it for a new person, but with a bit of work someone new to knitting could accomplish any of these designs.

This book is chock full of great patterns for several hats and hoods. I like that most of the patterns are for bulky and worsted weight yarns, and none of the patterns seem to difficult. The patterns are easy to read, and in the back of the book there are great photo tutorials of stitches and techniques used in the patterns.

Some of the patterns are not my style, maybe more suited to tweens and teens, but overall they were great patterns that were well written and easy to follow. My favorite is the fair isle hat! I would recommend to anyone who is interested in knitting hats for the first time, as there are many helpful instructions for some trickier parts of knitting hats - including the Kitchener stitch!
