Natural Disasters is a thrilling, unique take on a disaster story told from the perspectives of two teenagers who are repeatedly in the wrong place at the wrong time and are first hand witnesses to not only the Earthquake itself but also the impact of this on a divisive community. Jared and Melanie are realistically flawed characters trying to deal with an extraordinary situation admist the usual confusion of their teenage years. Where I feel this book really excelled was in portraying the feeling of utter helplessness as situstions get completely out of hand, the reader witnesses these horrors and is as helpless as the two characters and it really shows the best and worst sides of human nature,

I did really struggle at first with this book. There was a point at about 20% where I honestly thought I was going to DNF this book, but I wanted to push through as I haven't DNF'd a book in a very long time. Am I glad I didn't DNF this novel? I honestly don't know.
As the chapters change POV every chapter, I struggled to pick up who's POV was each chapter, but as it altered between Mel and Jared, I finally realised the pattern of POV. However, as the book did not specify the POV originally, I was definitely confused for the first 4-6 chapters.
I think this issue for me really caused me to struggle getting hooked into this book early on, but as the storyline continued, there was nothing major that got me hooked. I think the only redeeming feature that I enjoyed of this book was the character development of Melanie definitely. I also loved the development of the relationship of Melanie and Jared as well. I thought that Wise did well with showing the flaws of both characters and how together they worked well as a team working for the best, unintentionally for the other school kids within their area.
