Description

It all started with a single pain pill.

Up until that pill, high school junior Matt Davidson had it all—or, at least, everyone thought he had it all. A star athlete from a good family, no one suspected the trouble lurking beneath Matt’s carefully constructed façade. And Matt was just fine with that. Because if anyone could hear the dark thoughts that cluttered his mind, they’d know what a selfish, miserable mess he really was.

Matt thinks he can stop. He knows he can stop. And he will, just not yet. Because nothing but the pills can give him a break from his thoughts. Nothing else makes him invincible. Nothing else halts the sinking spiral of his depression.

Nothing… until he meets Amy, a mysterious and beautiful classmate who sparks a passion in him he’s never felt before. As their relationship progresses, Matt knows he can’t have them both. But he also knows he needs his pills. And when he’s finally forced to choose, the decision isn’t as easy as he’d hoped.

Advance Praise

"Incredible characterization and excellent storytelling cadence. The author did such a wonderful job creating these characters, that I felt like I had known each of them personally. The subject matter is dark and intense at times, but handled in a fair way. I would definitely read more that this author had to offer."

"Ms. Benoit skillfully immerses the reader in the lives of her characters and illuminates the complexities of major social and medical crises in our society today. This is the second book I have read by this author. Once again her descriptions, dialogue and the pace of the story keep the reader engaged and rooting for the main characters to overcome their difficulties. Bravo!"

"The story has many elements, but at its core it is a story about addiction, which is such a difficult subject. From the outside, and in movies, usually all you ever see is the trainwreck—disaster, confusion, tragedy. This book is incredible because reading it feels like you’re on the train, enjoying the ride, exhilarating in the feel of the wind in your hair, in the terribly irrational and terribly compelling confidence that the train will never crash, despite the brick wall that’s clearly straight in front of you. It’s real and it’s horrifying, and this book will help you understand it."

Matt is your typical high school football player until he is not. He starts spiraling slowly during his Junior year. He is abused by his father both physically and mentally. It takes its toll on him mentally. He starts a battle inside his head. One day an acquaintance offer him a joint and he takes it. It starts him down a path of drugs with no return. Amy is a bright young girl who only wants what is best for Matt. She is the only one he feels that gets him. Can their young love survive?

This was a very slow read for me. There was so much to digest. It was so well written. It was hard for me to read, the pain that Matt was going thru. I felt that I was sitting there in Matt's head watching him struggle with this addiction. This showed how easy it is to fall into an addiction. I also feel that it showed what a monster addiction can be.

Amy was so sweet in this book. Her character gave me so many feels while reading about her. I almost could relate to her. She is a caregiver. She wanted to help each of her boyfriends thru the book, from Kyle to Matt. I feel that her connection to Matt was very strong. They worked so well together.

The ending of the book gave me hope. Matt has a short conversation with Amy's brother, about how he got clean. Matt at first did not believe, at least that was the impression I got while reading. It wasn't until the last page that you could see Matt was starting to understand that he is an addict and always will be. There is hope that he will stay clean.
