Description

After seven long years in Devon, Lady Maud Worlington returns to London to reclaim life on her own terms, but a nefarious shadow and the prospect of financial ruin dog her steps. An impulsive and unforgettable kiss under the mistletoe creates a connection with Geoffrey, the handsome, young Duke of Tilbury. Yet as pleasant as it is to have a suitor, Maud is not sure how a boy of one-and-twenty can prove an equal partner in life and the equal of all the forces mounted against her.

The Duke of Tilbury considers himself as adept at managing matters as he is at swordplay, but his beautiful new acquaintance Lady Worlington has other ideas about how to manage her complicated life. Intrigued by their stolen kiss, Geoffrey pursues Lady Worlington's affections, only to be foiled by the lady's own doubts, by rivals for her hand, and by a sudden death that affects both their families. When Jacob Pevensey, the investigator from Bow Street enters the scene, the duke becomes a prime suspect in the murder case. Truths are unearthed that Geoffrey would rather keep hidden, and the twelve days of Christmas race toward a perilous end.

This Regency novel of romantic suspense was inspired by the medieval events surrounding the sinking of the White Ship in 1120. It is the third novel in the Pevensey Mysteries but can be read with enjoyment as a standalone Christmas novel.

Lady Worlington is a young widow who comes back to her family in London. She is much sought after, but one kiss from young Lord Tilbury turns her world upside down. He may only be twenty-one but he is a man who takes his responsibilities seriously. He feels he must offer for her despite that she thinks him too young and has only known him a few days. He talks to her brother who asks his intentions. Lord Tilburg tells him he wants her because he has feelings for her. Her father tells her that she must get married again. Several men want her but for the wrong reasons. Her stepson is blackmailing her for a note written in a weak moment. Lord Tilburg finds out about it and challenges him to a duel. Can Lady Worlington forget the age difference and find love again? What happens during the duel? I liked that this was a story with the heroine being somewhat older than the hero. Loved the book. I received this book from Net Galley and Madison Street Publishing for a honest review and no compensation otherwise.

A Duel for Christmas is a perfect read during the holidays or as a quick read anytime. One of my favorite things about the book is something that is quite a delightful surprise! The historical information that inspired author Rosanne E. Lortz to write this historical novel is included as well as how Lortz wove the inspiration into this novel.

There are many characters within A Duel for Christmas that I would like to get to know better- Ralph, Helena, Maud's mother, Mr.Mr. Pevensey and Miss Cecil. I can tell they have their own stories to share! (This novel is the 3rd in The Pevensey series and can be read on its own which is what I did). The book has romance, adventure, and a mystery or two to solve! Add a duel or two and you have a festive read!

The two main characters in A Duel for Christmas are Geoffrey, The Duke of Tilbury and Maud, Lady Worlington. When they first meet Geoffrey is distracted by his need to look after his younger sister, Helena who is engaged to Maud's brother, Will. He pays little attention to the beautiful widow. Soon they find they have much in common including a growing attraction... Geoffrey is determined to win her hand, yet he doesn't know about the evil step son blackmailing her or about the annoying cousin who is pursuing her.

This book moves fast. I was never bored, I enjoyed the plot twists, the conversation and characters seem realistic. Writing is good, love the inclusion of poetry and literature - very smoothly inserted. What's great is that I did not guess who the real killer was! Bravo!!!

I received this advanced reader's copy from Netgalley, Rosanne E. Lortz, and Madison Street Publishing in exchange for my honest review. Thank you all for your hard work!

Overall, I enjoyed A Duel for Christmas. I am a sucker for Regency romance, so this work was right up my street. I loved the characters of Maud and Geoffrey, and the plot had plenty of action and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat, figuratively speaking. I thought the story evoked the era well; however, there were, I believe, mistakes in the titling of some of the noble characters. I did also wonder at times about the romance. I liked the idea of the two of them as a pair, but there was an element of insta-love about it, and we didn't get many opportunities to observe them together, getting to know each other. This is the third book in a series. It certainly can be read as a standalone; nonetheless, I do wonder whether having read the other two books would have helped. As it was, the character of Pevensey, when he came in partway through the tale, seemed to have a lot of backstory that it might have been useful to know. But, as I said, a generally enjoyable read despite a few faults, and I did appreciate the clever transposition of medieval history to a Regency setting.

A very good read. I am a Regency Romance fan so this book was right up my alley. It is 99% sweet and clean. There was some texture that appealed to me. The book gets into the culture and sub-culture of the era.

A young woman is widowed at an early age, She has a title but her step-son is actually her senior. Whether you want to blame it on Electra or just out and out greed. The heroine slips from grace and is being made miserable and penniless. She comes to London to try and put her life back on track and to solidly SLAM the doors on her skeletons. She returns home to her family, her step-son is hovering in the wings, there is intrigue, murder, death, romance and obviously a duel.

A Duel for Christmas is set in 1800's England within the lifestyle of Lord's and ladies. The leading characters are Lady Maud Worlington, a recently widowed young woman and Lord Geoffrey Tilbury. A young Lord, who is charge of his sister's keep. They come together and find that they have a great desire for each other.
But there are things in Maud's past that haunt her and could be used against her. Soon there is a death, which turns out to be a murder and now Lord Tilbury is suspected.
This story is full of intrigue, mystery, and romance. The characters are well written and enjoyable to get to know. I found myself quickly reading through to not only solve the mystery, but hope that there was a happily ever after.
This is a Jake Prevensy series novel, but can be read as a stand alone. Prevensy is the investigator in the murder and smart character who is great with details. This is my first book by Rosanne E. Lotz and I truly enjoyed this read.

Thank you to Netgalley for sending me this to read for an honest review.
