Description

While escorting Bryn Derwyn Academy’s most infamous student downtown to be scared straight by a federal judge, amateur sleuth Ginger Barnes is shocked to find her childhood babysitter, textile Professor Charlie Finnemeyer, on trial for fraudulently aging an Oriental rug. Even more alarming, two witnesses against him died suspiciously convenient “natural” deaths.

Eager to help Charlie’s attorney any way she can, Gin pries a tightly held secret from a university president and exposes murder motives for a popular TV craft show host, and two antique dealers. Charlie’s overprotective wife also has a talent for showing up at the wrong place at the worst possible time.

Still, the evidence implicating Charlie can’t be swept under a rug. Before Gin can persuade anyone else he’s innocent, she must first convince herself.

This is the first book in this series I've read, and if the others are this good, I've missed a treat. Gin, is the wife of a private academy's headmaster, mother of two plus fur baby, friend to many, and an educated, smart, savvy, amateur sleuth. There are actually two different plots going here that intersect in very interesting ways. While helping her husband, by delivering a problem student to the federal courthouse for a life lesson with a judge, she drops in a courtroom proceeding, while waiting to retrieve the problem student. She is stunned to discover the person on trial is the gentleman, who along with his wife, babysat her for most of her growing up years. The much loved retired professor is on trial for antiquities fraud, and the other surprise is his attorney, an old friend and college buddy of her husband's. They all reconnect and she's determined to help prove his innocence. Add in a couple of suspicious deaths and a real mystery is open for solving. Really enjoyed this book and plan to read the preceding books. Solid 5+ stars. Don't know how I missed this series.

This book is a delight. Not only is it about antique textiles (something I adore), but Ms. Murray's descriptions of characters and locales really bring the book to life. The main character is likable and smart, and the mystery is entertaining. An added bonus is that I actually learned something about antique textiles. Solid research, entertaining characters and an involving mystery. I can't wait to read the rest of the series if they're all this good!
