Description

The returned primarch Roboute Guilliman strives to save the Imperium from an era of death and darkness.

Fell times have come to the galaxy. Cadia has fallen, destroyed by the onslaught of Chaos. A Great Rift in the warp has opened and from its depths have spewed daemons and the horrors of Old Night. But all hope is not lost... A hero, long absent, has returned and with him comes the wrath of the Ultramarines reborn. Roboute Guilliman, the last of the loyal primarchs, has arisen from millennia in stasis to lead the Imperium out of darkness on a crusade the likes of which has not been seen since the fabled days of the Emperor. But never before have the forces of Ruin amassed in such numbers, and nowhere is safe from despoliation. From the dreaded Scourge Stars come the hordes of the Plaguefather, Lord Nurgle, and their pustulent eye is fixed on the Ultramarines home world of Macragge. As the Indomitas Crusade draws to an end, Guilliman and his army of Primaris Space Marines race to Ultramar and a confrontation with the Death Guard.

The returned primarch Roboute Guilliman strives to save the Imperium from an era of death and darkness.

A wonderful addition to the Warhammer 40k world. The Dark Imperium is a treat to long time warhammer fans but new readers may need an earlier entry. The book successfully introduces the next arc of the universe and at the same time makes one nostalgic for the previous editions. The book explores the impact and adds a new element to the usually grimdark Imperium, hope. The grimm darkness of the end times has always been about the refusal to surrender in the face of futility. The dak imperium gives a chance at rebirth for an empire and with it a franchise. The actions of the characters matter and are not just another event in the long line of endless battle. Things may be dark but there is light at the other end of the tunnel, no matter how difficult, no matter how far. On its own the book is an excellent read but as part of a greater whole , it makes on crave for more.

I've read a lot of 40k books in my time, so I was excited to find out about what happens "next", especially if it involved one of my top 3 primarchs, Roboute Guilliman (whose name I'm still unsure how to properly pronounce, even after all these years).

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was interesting reading about the new types of Space Marines and weapons that have come into play. There were times that I kind of felt like I had been dropped into the middle of something, like there was another book I should have read before this one. Unless it was a tabletop sourcebook, though, that does not appear to be the case.

In any event, I got a good picture of the state of the galaxy post-Guilliman rebirth, there were a lot of cool fights, some revelations about the nature of the Emperor in his post-Heresy state, and a being that made a claim about one of the Lost Legions. What else could you want?!

I have said all I wanted to say in my review link below. Apart from that I had a real blast with Dark Imperium. I thank Netgally and Black Library for granting me access to the E-Arcs.

I had some trouble following along as I'm new to the Warhammer universe. The characters and the setting were written well, I just couldn't fully get into it.
