Description

The poems of Nocturnal—newly revised and expanded—are constellations to guide those on a journey of healing and self-discovery, no matter how dark the night.

From @wilderpoetry comes a heavily expanded revised edition of Nocturnal, a collection of poetry and beautifully illustrated black-and-white imagery inspired by darkened days and sleepless nights.

Poetry meets presentation in each of the four sections ("Dusk," "Northern Lights," "Howl," "Lucid Dreams,"), which trace the author's continuing journey of self-discovery while illuminating a path for others along the way. Ink stains, landscapes, dreamlike animals, blackened pages, and textured spreads create a multifaceted reading experience. And true to the moniker, these poems are linked by a motif of "the wild."

Celebrating the art of self-love poetry with both word and image, Nocturnal will leave readers comforted, curious, and inspired to explore the world around them.

This book of poetry is a steady and familiar voice as you share her journey through these pages.
Inspiration from the natural world and emotions as forceful and focused as tides, storms, light and loss. All beautifully supplemented and enhanced by wistful and ethereal artwork in black and white illustrations.
A collection you could not tire of reading or dipping into, about misplaced love, broken dreams and heartache while sensing a struggle to be loved, held and reaching for something more.
I liked the concept of a relationship as a flat pack assembly item and the sense of losing someone between yesterday and tomorrow.
I feel each time you pick this book up thoughts will be prompted and memories stirred. Different words or drawings will capture your heart or lift your spirit.
No examples from the work will fully resonate in a review but I share a sample of the tone and melody that makes one's soul sing.
"you loved me quickly,
like footprints in the snow."
"my body is in adeep sleep,
but mt heart still feels the ache
and I'm waiting for a dream
to shake the rest of me awake."
"I spend my days
leaving doors open behind me
hoping there is something you
might want to come back for;
KEYS ON THE TABLE,
RAINCOAT, COFFEE,

ME."
and finally...........................................
"like the sky , i'm always moving.

YOU DIDN'T WANT ME TO LEAVE,
BUT YOU NEVER ASKED ME TO STAY."

Words are a precious thing.
When presented in this way they have a magical quality only dreams can offer.
Wake up and enjoy reading: ' it's only words, but words are all i have, to take your heart away.'

Nocturnal (Revised and Extended)
Author: Wilder Poetry
Pub date: 7 May 2019
Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing

How can a collection of poetry be so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. A collection inspired by 'darkened days and sleepless nights', Nocturnal explores the raw human emotions of love and loss, grief and healing. Seperated into four distinct sections, Dusk, Northern Lights, Howl and Lucid Dreams, these sections follow the authors journey of self discovery along a path of heartbreak and torment through to a discovery of courage and self love. This collection was full of beautiful imagery and the nature motif created an atmospheric read. Completed by beautiful illustrations, the whole book has a dreamy feel and I felt like i floated through the poems in a contemplative haze. In my subjective opinion I got a strong feeling from each of the different sections. In Dusk I felt strong themes of letting go and trying to move on, in Northern Lights thoughts of hope and new beginning took. When we entered Howl, I began to feel the author describing ones inner peace and strength, and how the individual is able to find peace through nature. Finally in Lucid Dreams I felt a sense of the authors resilience and ability to accept change. Personally I found a lot of comfort through these poems and thoroughly enjoyed the entire collection. This collection has a piece for every memory, every good day and every bad day and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to begin reading poetry like myself.

A few of my favourite pieces from the collection:

'I hold promises
Between my lips
Hoping to speak them
To someone
Who will show me
What it's like to be
Held with more
Than just two hands'

'Like love
It will either drown you
Or help you grow'
WATER

'Dear self,
It was real bwcause you felt it,
Love is meant to hurt when it leaves'

I really enjoyed this collection, I thought it had a lot of strong poems. Some were shorter and didn't resonate as much with me. Overall I found this collection to be a beautiful work of self love and growth.

Wow...
So this was everything I never knew I needed to read.
Think: self love but not preachy, thought-provoking and a strong reminder that to love and be loved are important for our own happiness.
This is definitely fitting into the category of 'modern poetry' and in the best possible way! I would definitely compare it to the works of Rupi Kaur however less feminine in a good way! Gave it another perspective which was very much appreciated.

I enjoyed a lot of the poems (a majority I would say) but not enough to absolutely love the collection. However, there is some beautiful writing here and I love the cover as well! I related to a lot of the poetry but nothing really stood out to me or made me stop and think.

This book came to me at a perfect moment in my life. My father just passed away, and I was floating in a cloud of sadness. This served as an anchor for me, and really helped me get through the feelings of loss and heartache. The pages are filled with beautiful artworks with a gorgeous dark vs. light theme. The collection bravely talks about loss, grief and self-discovery.

I highly recommend this for anyone who needs comfort or motivation, and for all who loves really good poetry and art. I hope this brings light to your darkness, too.

There was a lot of really well rounded poems in this book. And the art work thrown in was a beautiful surprise. I enjoyed this book.

This is my first time reading the poet and it definitely won’t be my last. I read this amazing collection in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down once I’d started to read. The poetry deals with themes that can be universal and very personal and at times I felt like I was spying on the poet’s innermost thoughts and feelings. The collection was even more of a pleasure to read because of the paintings, ink stains and blackened pages scattered throughout, almost as if the poems had been torn from a notebook, a well-loved, well-used one that had been used for sketches and doodles. Nocturnal offers a unique and impressive reading experience.

Nocturnal is a touching and at times heartbreaking poetry collection with beautiful illustrations. I honestly fell in love with it.

Nice collection of poems and imagery. I haven't read a lot of poetry but I think I'm going to read more now!

Great book.I can find some lines resonating with me -
" point me right direction and I promise,
I will still get lost"
Powerful soothing words and relaxing illustration in ink. I just love this book..
I received a digital arc from #netgalley and the poems and illustrations are so beautiful. I will definitely save up some money to buy this when this gets out.

I thought this poetry book is quite beautiful. Granted all of the stuff here sounds like things I’ve heard before either in poetry form or just… as sayings, but the images accompanying this has such an atmospheric affect that I was pretty dazzled by the whole of the book. Gorgeous all in all. Definitely recommend!

Nocturnal is an artwork, it's so beautifully crafted and put together and I can't wait to get my hands on a printed copy of this as it's absolutely stunning. This work comes from such an amazing mind that I can see being talked about far into the future. This easily came to be my second favorite modern poetry collection, my first being PIllow THoughts by Courtney Peppernel. Wilder is a great poet and I'm keen to see what the future will hold for them

***
Nocturnal by Wilder is an experience. At times, peaceful and then heart wrenching this beautiful collection of poetry with beautiful illustrations was amazing. This collection is broken into 4 sections and goes on a path of love, loss, heartache, self love and healing. Nocturnal is largely made up of short pieces but what powerful, beautiful, lyrical short pieces they are. Maybe this collection came to me at a time when it resonates most with me, maybe I’m in the best place to read it and feel it now, but Nocturnal is a lovely, heartfelt read.

This book was gorgeous. Both the artwork and the poems were lovely, and the way they were all connected to the overall theme of the collection made for a very good read.

Not only were the art and poems connected to each other and the overall theme of the collection, but the poems were often connected to each other. Sometimes this connection was deliberately made visible, such as the ends and beginnings of each poem in the Lucid Dreams part of the collection, and other times the connection was less obvious.

Overall, the poetry was well-written and engaging, and I loved the theme of the collection.

I don't often read poetry collections, but every now and then I stumble across one the piques my interest and Nocturnal definitely fits that bill. The first thing I have to say is just how stunning this collection of poetry is from an aesthetic perspective. I'm a really visual person and when a book has illustrations, different coloured pages, and text in different sizes, styles and placement it really appeals to me. I kept flipping back to previous pages to reread and re-examine pages I'd read because something about it stood out to me.The poems themselves are simple and easy to read. They explore self-discovery and the 'wildness' that exists within us all. Unlike some collections I've read previously (and enjoyed) this one came across as far more hopeful and light-hearted and as such it made it a pleasure to read. This is a book I will be preordering a physical copy of for my shelves because it's just so beautiful and it's something I know I'll come back to time and again.

NOTE: I received an e-arc of this from Net Galley but my opinions are my own.

This poetry collection was lovely. Full of incredible artwork that celebrates the moon and a magical thread connecting the words. I would call this a coming-of-age collection that centers around relationships, growing as a person and self love. At best these poems aren't about wallowing in pity, they seem to be meant to empower the reader while still cradling them through the grief of lost loves and growing up.

While I don't feel that I, a 34 year old woman, is the target audience for this collection, I was still able to connect with multiple poems, the overarching sentiment, and enjoy a sense of bittersweet nostalgia. I would highly recommend it to sensitive readers between the ages of 13 and 23. It lends itself to a sweet, indie-music style that I think that particular demographic will truly connect to.

Not only were the poems in this book evocative and emotional, but the drawings paired so effortlessly well and really brought a complete aesthetic feel to this book. Absolutely stunning I want to buy a copy for myself and my poetry obsessed friends!

This is such a lovely collection of poetry that celebrates self-love and growth in a minimalist but profound aesthetic. My favorite poem was:

i climb mountains to see the world
wear different shades of honesty.

and isn't it beautiful
the way we see things change?
the way our eyes fall in love
with a different time of day
knowing that it will never hurt
when tomorrow comes.

my eyes will remember
how to love the world
under changing skies.

when the light changes,
so does the view.

This poetry collection along with the artworks are very enticing. It speaks to me and found many that very relevant for me.

As the blurb suggest, this one is very good for those in healing process. It doesn't belittled our woes and it gives us hopes that there will always be light after the dark.

Thank you #netgalley for providing the arc.

This was my first experience with Poetry, as I usually don't read poetry and It's been twelve years since I last read a poetry book. But soon as I saw this wonderful cover I wanted to read it. I'm so glad I did.
I'm delighted with this little gem. The words were simply beautiful, meaningful. The illustrations were fabulous and I loved how fitting they were. It is a book about stars and night, nature and feelings of love, and heartbreak and also acceptance. There are many feelings contained in each poem.
It was relaxing for me and I recommend it to those who enjoy pretty artwork and lyrical writing.

I very much like Wilder Poetry on Instagram so I was excited to read this book. It didn't disappoint! While the poetry is minimalistic, I really enjoyed the emotions behind the words.

Feeling so inspired by this beautiful collection of poems. The art is equally just as exquisite. My heart is happy after reading this.

This book has been very well compiled. The order of the poems, the categories and their division made sense to me. I didn't feel repetition although the poems circle around the same topics.

The drawings included are also amazing. Seriously. So well done and mesmerizing.

It is a very beautiful book.

i've always been told that
i was born chasing sunsets, but
sometimes i wonder if i'm really
just trying to find a way
to be in two places at once.

Nocturnal is an interesting collection; it doesn't ever settle on just one main theme, but seems to flit between love and loss, insecurities and self-love, all tossed with a healthy focus on nature and all the healing it can offer us.

my heart tends to live
in the wrong place at
the right time,
but i've always loved
the sound of rain
on a sunny day
and the moon after
sunrise.

So many of the poems in this collection resonated deeply with me, particularly the creator's acknowledgement of their own patient-to-a-fault attitude towards toxic partners (been there!). More than anything, I loved the sections on self-love, and would have enjoyed more of those scattered throughout. The only reason I'm giving this 4 instead of 5 stars is that some of the pieces felt repetitive or out of place in the grand scheme.

I also feel like I can't complete this review without showing you an example of what I mean when I say that this is, without a doubt, the most visually beautiful poetry collection I have ever seen. It's filled with illustrations and watercolor scenery that lend the most incredible atmospheric touches.

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Stunning collection of poetry with even gorgeous artwork here and there.
Although I can't relate to all pieces, I felt it. And isn't that what poetry is about?

I really enjoyed this work. The poems are really lovely. As well the imagery chosen - well illustrated for this is wonderfully done. A great read for those who love poetry.

I know poetry is subjective and intuitive, but this is how I feel about "Nocturnal": It brought me joy, because some poems mangaged it to express how I feel and I was stunned and other poems where exactly the words I needed to hear. And also, at some points I had to stop and admire the beauty of the style and I was wishing I had written it
I will read it again tomorrow and the day after that to keep this work of art in mind.

Beautifully written, lyrically expressive on a myriad of topics. There is no one theme except perhaps self-reflection. The author jumps around between love and loss, insecurity and self empowerment with focus on night and dreams and nature. There is a "wildness" to it that is so connectable.. Some of the poems are whimsical and light and some are deal with heavier emotions. One of my favorite was about time, so accurate and trusting and youthful in its approach...I really oved the way the author used words and emotions to express ideas and concepts, the breakdown of chapters into different variations of light also added some magic and at the same time nostalgia to the mix. Evoked a mix of emotions but was an absolute pleasure to read. Highly recommended!

"there is something graceful
about the way time passes by -
how it gives itself away,
never knowing whose hands
will stop to hold it before
it leaves"

"i dream of an almighty night
full of wonder and a north star
that knows the way"

The art was a pleasant surprise and was a lovely compliment to the words.
I thought this was a heartbreaking glimpse into grief and loss, but also comforting and motivational for the spirit. These words resonated with me, the title was also perfect for this collection.

“a heart was made
to live in the dark;
maybe we were too.”
-Maybe we were meant to so that we appreciate the light.

Beautiful collection of poetry. The topics vary but mainly concern love and loss. I love finding a poetry collection that expresses how i've felt better than i could have put into words and Nocturnal did just that.

'i haven't met a cloud
that didn't touch me'

There is just something about this collection of poetry that I really like.
Little editions that Wilder Poetry makes to each stanza just make you go 'yes that's it' it's uplifting and touching and I just finished it but I want to read it again right now.
The art is as beautiful as the poetry and on some pages, it's so bloody pretty I've bookmarked my favourite illustrations to look at again later.
The collection isn't without its faults. Like a lot of modern poetry anthologies, I felt like some of the poems were placeholders or just put in to up the page count.
Having said that I would recommend this to people trying to get into poetry or for enthusiasts that are looking for a new collection by an up-and-comer. Its a quick read (under 100 pages) with a very good reread value.

Nocturnal is a collection of fascinating poems that can pull some strings from our hearts. The collection contains self love, nature, experiences and such.

What I liked:
First things first. I love the aesthetics of the book cover! It reminds of the saying “less is more” and it is definitely appropriate for the overall theme of the book. As for the writing style, it is easy to read and I enjoy getting lost between the lines and pages.
The artworks or visuals of some pages on this book are so stunning that I can’t help but take a screenshot of those pages.
Further, I have read this book late at night and it might have affected me while reading it because I felt every bit of the poems. This book has touched some of the deepest insecurities I have about myself and that made me teary-eyed.
Lastly, this book made a bit impact on my perspective on self love and confidence.

What I did not liked:
This book has a lot of potential but in defiance of all the good things I’ve stated above, it wasn’t enough to be stuck on my mind for a long time. Nevertheless, I enjoyed and liked this book!

Recommend or not:
Yes!

"I'm still trying to find the parts of me I left hidden between the pages of a story I never wanted to forget., but you were always in the last place I looked."

Each month, I vowed to myself that I would discover new poets and love them the same why I love the others. @wilderpoetry is no exception.

Nocturnal's mood was very intriguing and engrossing. Every poem was meant to make you feel things. It comes from everyday experience and the inspirations just kept on coming. I personally wanted to write my own poetry collection, and this book immediately made it to the roster of inspirations that made me feel that I could actually do it.

Also, can we talk about how the black and white aesthetic added to the mood? The art in this book (aside from the words) were carefully woven together, and I just can't get enough.

These words, they're something. So let's share it to the world when this book comes out.

To me, poetry reads as an extremely personal, intimate experience, and this was no exception. The language is easy to follow but leaves interpretation up to the reader. The imagery was beautiful as was the related artwork, making this both lyrically and visually appealling. I particularly enjoyed the Wolf section and the relations between poems in the Lucid Dreaming section.

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with an opportunity to review this ARC.

I'm not a big poetry reader, but I enjoy the occasional poetry collection. I'm not one to analyze poems, so I like to understand them right away. This definitely is something that factors into my enjoyment of a poetry collection. I first came across Wilder Poetry through Instagram, I follow and love Atticus and was pointed towards Wilder.

While this is what I would call modern poetry, it's also different from Amanda Lovelace and Rupi Kaur, the only other two authors I've read poetry from. Coincidentally all of these poetry collections are by women, and that makes me very happy. Like I said, Nocturnal is different from other poetry collections I have read, and that's almost completely because of the design. The design of this book is to die for. It's so gorgeous, I could look at it forever. I actually took a bunch of screenshots, so I could do just that.

There wasn't really a theme or story throughout the whole collection, or at least not an obvious one. Therefor I wasn't compelled to keep on reading, but instead had to take breaks after reading a couple of poems. I also read a couple of the poems again, and realized I understood them better. For me, this collection felt less 'easy' so to see, but still very accessible and with some amazing poems. I really liked the focus on nature and the parallels that were being drawn. There were also themes of love, loss and self-care. All very important topics in my opinion. I could really relate to some of the poems and I think that definitely ensures higher enjoyment with poetry collections.

This poetry collection is one you definitely want to own, my eARC will disappear in the next couple of days and I'm already sorry for that. I want to keep on looking at these gorgeous designs, and read these poems again. If you're like me, and don't read a lot of poetry, I would definitely recommend this poetry collection!

This was the first poetry collection from Wilder Poetry that I've ever had the pleasure to read. It is an achingly beautiful work of art. The intensity of the poems are juxtaposed with calming black and white watercolor-type imagery of the moon in its phases, birds, trees, and other nature-related things.

The poetic themes seem to be centered around the poet's identity and the euphoria, misery and pain of love in its highs and lows. Her voice sounds quite young and that should appeal to readers in their teens and twenties. Readers of the poetry of Atticus should enjoy this collection very much

This is going to be a shorter review than I normally write, but this book is no less wonderful than the others I review <3

I’m a sucker for poetry. There’s something so beautiful about reading the inspirational, lyrical prose that you can’t get from anything else. Poetry has always been a huge part of my life–whether I’m reading it or writing it, it’s a permanent fixture of my being.

Nocturnal is a perfect collection of poems, all with the underlying theme of darkness, insomnia, the night sky, and the like. The poems are stunning examples of humanity and the emotions we all experience at one time or another in our lives.

I loved this book and I highly recommend it to any fans of poetry–or any insomniacs who’re looking for something to read in the wee hours of the night <3

"these reflections keep telling me
to hate all of the things
i am meant to love.

i blink my eyes
and start over again.

loving (myself) isn't easy,
but it always find its way back."

I loved this so much! I loved a lot of these poems compared to when i read Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. To me, these poems were soft and gentle compared to Milk and Honey where it was more forward and aggressively, not in a bad way but more inspirational wise, honest to the point.

The poems had many topics but were mostly about love and loss and self-love with comparison to nature. I'm a huge sucker for these types of writing where they in-cooperate and personify nature as if they are someone there for us all the time if we just bothered to look their way.

"i haven't met a cloud
that didn't touch me
changing shapes in the wind;
not because we asked
her to be different, but
because the wild showed her
it was okay to be free."

Now the art here is so breathtaking and beautiful. I took some screenshots to make them my phone background!

Excuse the comparison of these two books but they are the latest poems that I've read and are written in the same poem format that I didn't know existed. I'm not a big fan of poems most of the time but I'm loving and enjoying this format! Definitely will seek out more.

With poems that really touch your Soul, Nocturnal was a marvelous read.
One of those books that at the same time that you wanna devour because it's one beauty after the other, you also want to take your time, enjoy every one word, every page. Read, digest, feel and then move on to the other. Re-read the best ones. When the best one is every one

I really enjoyed this short poetry collection. I will say that the short poems didn't always click with me as much as the longer ones did. This collection managed to be heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, and it's been a while since a collection gave me those feelings.
I also really like when there's illustrations in the collection, and the ones in this one were stunning!

Wow! I actually love this book!
The illustrations and the poetry really compliment each other and make a wonderful experience to read it.
I read this book at night, with a slow instrument in the background, and I felt the world is so quiet and the timing was just perfect to read it.

I usually I have a little problem poetry, in a sense of me can feel the connection with the poem itself or not. And even though it happened with few poems, I still love this book so much. Wilder’s writing is so great. It’s so easy to understand but not cheap♥️

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a digital copy of this book. The opinions are entirely my own.

Nocturnal features lovely poems in simple words, the same tumblrish style that is quite trendy and effective right now. What I like the most about this style is the power these simple words have and the great meanings and themes they deliver.

Most poems are about insecurity, love, self-love, nostalgia and a connection with the sky. They are simple and beautiful.

This is a poetry collection about many subjects. It talks about love, loneliness, self improvement, you get the jist of it.

So, what makes this one worth your while?

For starters, the poems themselves are beautiful. They deal with sensitive topics in a delicate and wonderful way.

Not only that, this book is absolutely gorgeous. I’d love to hold it in my hands someday and take pictures of all my favourite pages.

Rather strong collection of poems where a theme of self care is predominate but doesn't become overly so, nor does it become to preachy. Was impressed by the poet's command of language and imagery. Would happily read other works by them.
